Valentines Hop: Love triangles yes or no?

This blog hop is organised via the Facebook group Bookish Blog Hops and runs from 1st- 15th February 2019. During the blog hop members of the group will be coming together to answer bookish questions (you can find the complete schedule for the blog hop down below at the end of this post).

.

Love Triangles yes or no?

Brandy Potter

[image error]I don’t like love triangles. It usually means someone is cheating and that doesn’t make a relationship. Now if you have the Best Friend of the opposite sex and boyfriend triangle ala Ducky and Andi in Pretty in Pink that’s cool. Or the Ex and current triangle, I’m good with that, but while they add tension I suppose that they aren’t really triangles.

I don’t mind love triangles but they have to be done well or they just become annoying.

I have seen it done so poorly, so many times… and almost all of the time, I can pick out exactly who will “win out” in the end, so all the hemming and hawing and dithering about is pointless and aggravating, distracting me from whatever else is happening in the story…. So I’m going to say “Hard PASS!” on this one!

.

Actually, there is but one time in media that I’ve ever seen this work out in a way that I truly enjoyed, and that was the love triangle set up between the protagonist, his love interest, and the erstwhile “wildcard” character in the show Grimm. It happened that the protagonist had just been taking the circumstances of his life for granted, so just on the heels of him coming to terms with one dramatic change in his life, the story throws him another curveball as a villain tries to enchant his love interest to both forget about him completely, and be attracted to said “wildcard”…. Whereupon the “wildcard” character actually does the altruistic thing and steps aside to let the protagonist win his girlfriend back! Thus both men could actually maintain good terms, and the protagonist learns to no longer take things like love and relationships for granted… Now, that being said, the show absolutely went sideways and did things between characters that I don’t 100% agree with, but the Love Triangle Incident has always been a moment I thoroughly enjoyed!

I don’t typically read a lot of love triangles, but I’m not opposed to them. I actually can’t remember the last time I read one.

Ooh, I quite like love triangles. It makes for a lot of heartbreak and tension. Which lover makes me the best version of myself? Which one supports my dreams? It has to be done right, though. I can’t stand those characters who go back and forth between the two, many times. It seems like they should choose someone completely different. One of my favourites in the form is Outlander. The main character, Claire, must choose between Jamie, the Highlander from the 18th century, and her husband, Frank.

Full on Romance Books Or Action-Packed With A Few Love Scenes?

Brandy Potter.

[image error]I would have to go with Action Packed. I don’t like reading the mushy (pronounced moooooo-shy) stuff. I hate insta love and the romance books are rarely realistic in their portrayal of love/relationships. I like books where romance is the secondary motive for the story and the romance is part of the character’s transformation.
.

Jo Linsdell  www.jolinsdell.com

Whilst I do enjoy full on romance, I prefer action-packed with a few love scenes. I find that too much romance can sometimes be too much. I also think the love scenes mean more when they are mixed in amongst all the action.

.

Leslie Conzetti www.upstreamwriter.blogspot.com

.I tend to shy away from romance, mostly because I am more interested in what’s happening between the romantic scenes anyway… So when a book explicitly states that it is “Romance”, why would I expect anything else besides the romantic scenes? That being said, I get really grumpy when a book does not claim to be a “Romance”, and yet the whole time the main characters are absolutely distracted from the whole plot by their feelings for one another–and their own reluctance to deal with said feelings! I take my romance as a side dish: not the main thrust of the plot, the romance is used to develop the characters and further the plot, and outside of the odd romantic scene, the characters can still keep focused and move on through the non-romantic events without obsessing over one another!

Stormi https://bewitchedreader.wordpress.com

Both! I’m a genre hopper, so it really just depends on what mood I’m in for what I’m going to read. I do tend to read more contemporary and NA romances than anything, but I also read a lot of fantasy and thrillers.

Sarah Nowicki www.paranormalpeach.com

[image error]I have a blog dedicated to Paranormal Romance, soooo, it might be pretty obvious as to which side my bread is buttered. I love the Romance Genre!!! I love the interaction between characters, how feelings are hashed out and, ultimately, how everyone finds a happy ending. Having said that, I like some intrigue and action as well.

Luckily with paranormal romance, I’m more than likely going to get an even dose of both. And that’s really how I like it. There’s nothing like a character finding her sexy-as-sin soulmate while trying to defeat an evil force hell-bent on destroying the world. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

Name a loyal sidekick you can’t help but love more than their counterpart?

Brandy Potter.

Oh so many! Sam, Merry, Pippen, and Gimli in the Lord of the rings. Silk/Prince Kheldar and Beldin from David Eddings’ Belgariad and Mallorean series. Kalten and Flute/Aphreal from the Elenium/Tamuli series. How on earth do I pick just one? But if I have to pick two, (truly I can’t pick just 1) it would be Silk and Flute. He (Silk) is such a smart A$$ and she is a highly manipulative child goddess. I love it!

.
Jo Linsdell  www.jolinsdell.com

I love Groover from the Percy Jackson series. He’s loyal, kind, and a great friend. He also has plenty of talents of his own, and is a hero in his own right.

.

Leslie Conzetti  www.upstreamwriter.blogspot.com

.Samwise Gamgee, every time! So much of the focus rested on Frodo as the main character of the Lord of The Rings… but Sam showed real courage every chance he got! He stood against the darkness when there was no one left to stand, he kept going though everyone was trying to tell him not to. He carried AN ENTIRE CAMP KITCHEN into Mordor with him….

AND he even carried Frodo himself when the Ring got too heavy and the pressures made the young hobbit cave. Sam stood, Sam fought, Sam survived… and when it was all over, Sam stayed behind while the rest of his friends moved on. The others might have had circumstances thrust upon them by dark times and foul deeds, but every time Sam was given a way out, he was allowed (sometimes commanded) to stay behind or remain in safety–he chose the courageous path, and he did so deliberately, and showed incredible intelligence all the way through. Sam is the Ultimate Sidekick! A “Frodo” friend might be found when you least expect it, but a “Sam” will always be on hand when you need him most!

Stormi https://bewitchedreader.wordpress.com

[image error]Ron Weasley. I feel this is probably a common one, but also true. As much as I like Harry, I like Ron way more. I felt like Ron continually stuck by Harry, even when so many other’s didn’t, and involved himself in the battle with Voldemort selflessly. Harry was born into the Voldemort conflict or you could say pulled in by Voldemort himself,  but Ron inserted himself in it. Even when things at school weren’t easy, because we all know kids can be jerks or he was angry, like in Goblet of Fire, he was a great friend of Harry’s.

Canadian Creatures – Schreyer Ink Publishing

Rating: tardis001_by_sombra_fenix-d5traeu[image error] tardis001_by_sombra_fenix-d5traeu [image error]

I was asked to do this review in May and due to health concerns I am WAY behind in posting it. SO I do apologize.

This is an anthology of stories about Canadian Mythological creatures. The stories were written by seven (7) different authors and they all have very different styles. It was an interesting read, and I gave it 4 Tardises because on the whole I was very impressed with it. there were one or two that I just couldn’t get into, but that is a difference of style and not a reflection on the author. I am going to break this down by story.. and there are NO spoiler alerts needed.

The Silence Between the Moons by Peter Foote

The plot of the story is reminiscent of Poledra and Belgarath from David Edding’s Belgariad and Mallorean series. It is not written in a point of view that allowed me to easily identify with the main character . To me it seemed more like a book synopsis than a story particularly with the sparing use of pronouns. That being said, I liked the plot over all and the ending was fitting as well.

Uphill All the Way by Holly Schofield

Highly descriptive prose that allows the reader to fall into their own imagination. I did have to look up a few colloquialisms but that is part of the intention of this anthology, to bring to life Canadian culture and idiosyncrasies. It was also enlightening for me to read about the replanting efforts for loggers in Canada. Also, I enjoyed the fact that the entire story is a metaphor about diversity and symbiotic relationships.

Eyes on the Lake by Alyssa Theissen

This story should be developed into an novel! Well written and descriptive it was a plausible interpretation of two (2) very significant creatures in Canadian culture. The characters were believable and even in this short format fully developed.

Into the Boreal Wild by Jennifer Strassel

An interesting tale about a creature I had never heard of before. There was one plot hole, but not large enough for it to be distracting. The author did an excellent job of using descriptions that awakened the reader’s five senses. However, I felt as though the end were rushed. Like the author and the story had more to do but there were word count parameters that they were attempting to fit in.

Don’t Get Many Round Here by Dan Allen

Wow! What a story! The author definetly needs to develop this into a full book! The sory was face paced and full of the wait.. what??? moments that I LOVE in a thriller/adventure.

Adventures in Another Wonderland by Alex McGilvery

As the title implies, this is re-telling/re-imagining of a classic tale. I like stories like this that are well written and clever. There are creatures in this story that aren’t mythological though so it stand out among the other tales. Still well done!

If Wishes were Pennies by Sarah Walker

I liked this story. I liked it a lot. However, even as studied up on Mythology and fey folk as I am, there were WAY too many terms that had to be researched. Moreover, the terms weren’t necessarily Canadian as the were a hodge podge of various cultural pantheons. A short story doesn’t allow the time needed to define these races and creatures the way the author needs to. I would love to see if this would work out better if Ms. Walker developed this into a novel or even a series so that she had time to declare and expound on each race represented.

Hide and Seek by Casia Schreyer

This was a great story! It was action filled. Another mythology I knew nothing of. I truly want this developed into a novel or novella. I think it would allow the author to better explain why the main character is helping humans. Well done!
