That would have to be the mystery of the man in black I saw sitting at my family's dining room table, one night more than 25 years ago.

Who - or what - was it?

This story is entirely true. I'm not a skeptic, nor am I a believer. I like to think of myself as fortean - I present the data, you do what you like with it.

I grew up in New Zealand in an old house that was prone to weirdness, but most of which could be attributed to the usual problems of an old house - in this case, the foundations were sinking on one side, and the attic was often home to local wildlife. Unexplained noises and bumps and rattles were actually all rather explainable.

Except for the man in black.

It was a Saturday night sometime around 1992 or 93. My parents had gone to bed. I was around 15, an only child, and I was staying up late to get to grips with a video camera my mother, who was a schoolteacher, had borrowed from her department. While poring over the instruction manual and testing various settings, I panned the tripod-mounted camera around the living room, until I reached the open double-doorway that led into the dining room. It was around midnight, and both rooms were well lit.

Now, I only caught a glimpse - no more than a second, if that. Also, while the camera was operational, there was no tape in it. I wasn't recording anything.

But what I saw was someone sitting at the table - far corner, facing me. It was a black silhouette, head and shoulders and upper body, the arms held under the table. No detail or facial features were visible - this thing was just solid black - but it had white eyes.

Needless to say, I got a hell of a fright - I was looking down into the monochrome viewfinder, and I remember jerking my head up, heart pounding. There was nobody there. I checked the viewfinder, and just saw the black and white view of the table and chairs and empty room.

I decided at that point to perhaps continue playing with the camera in the hours of daylight, so packed up and went to bed.

So that's what happened - or at least, that's what I remember. Of course, this was 25 years ago, and memory cheats (and is not that reliable in the first place). There are any number of possibilities for what I saw - 1992 video camera tech was relatively primitive, so who knows what kind of glitch may have created a visual artefact. It was late, and I was tired. The rooms were lit, but who knows what kind of shadows they could have thrown that I'd never even noticed before.

But sometimes the house was weird, and that was just one particular element of strangeness I remember from my childhood and teenage years. And like I say, I'm neither a believer nor a skeptic, and I have no idea what I saw, if I even saw anything at all.

But I do think that would be a great mystery to solve. Because what better kind of mystery is there than a great ghost story?

If only there had been a tape running in the camera!(less)

Hi Kurt,

You may know that I am a huge Hawkgirl fan, so she'd be at the top of my list. But I love so many DC characters, I'd love a shot at nearly anyone! As for indie or creator-owned comics... watch this space :)(less)
