Unilateral Neglect Part 1
The following report is included in The Sheriff’s Jeep Log section as background material.
The author drove my pickup into downtown Eugene and parked on 5th with minimal grinding of the clutch. She had decided on her favorite method of securing an appointment: show up with a smile followed by a hook: “Bob has a strange obsession that I created him. Does that put me in some kind of particular danger?” She was ushered in without delay.
First question to exit the psychologist’s mouth: “Are you a...

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Since, as they say, good things (and bad) happen in threes, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the third and last of my angel series. Directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, this antiwar western is an allegory in which the age old war between Good and Evil is played out against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Blondie aka the Angel of Good, does battle with Angel Eyes; he’s the Angel of Bad. They’ve beamed in and are duking it out in what appears to be a treasure hunt. Me...

Blink
When in the presence of angels, whatever you do: Don’t Blink! I know what you’re thinking: That’s not a movie; it’s Episode 186 of Doctor Who; it’s supposed to have quotation marks around it. Well, Blink is so awesome that any top 250 list without it, is rubbish, so I’ve taken the liberty of raising Blink up to movie status, yes indeed: I have removed the quotation marks. Seriously this is a bad ass film that stands alone, so no worries about having not seen what goes before or after or above...

Far Away So Close
They know nothing of time, these angels watching, always watching, listening to human thoughts, moving through time effortlessly, but one angel, Cassiel, wants to become involved, to know what it’s like to be human. His wish comes true; now he is a foreigner in a strange land with perils he has no idea how to negotiate, and always he is hunted by Emit Flesti played by Willem Dafoe. Far Away So Close, directed, produced and written by Wim Wenders, is a deeply engaging film, an unusual film, a...

Perfume
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer: Is this an appropriate movie to begin 2016 with? Absolutely! Perfume, directed by Tom Tykwer and based on Patrick Suskind’s novel, is a magnificent movie, a unique film of incomparable artistry. It takes us places we’ve never been before. No, this is not a story about death but of life and love, two faces of the same coin. It is in fact a story about the unidentifiable ingredient that separates a cold, lifeless stone from living beings. Perfume: Not the Story...

The Martian
I’ve been considering my last post for 2015; I’ve been asking myself if there are any movies from 2015 that are good enough for this honor, and I came up with Ridley Scott’s: The Martian. Yes, it is the perfect choice with which to end the year and set off into the new one. Beyond the fact of the top notch acting, plot, and cinematography, this is a hopeful film, one that pushes back against the increasingly hostile world of movies and TV, and best of all, it’s humorous and reminds us of the...
