Susan grew up in Pietermaritzburg, where she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Speech & Drama. After touring the country for twenty years as a stage manager, she settled in Durban and returned to studying. When her academic writing was invaded by fictional characters with their own stories to tell, she began writing fiction instead.

In 2007, Susan joined the South African Writers' Circle, winning awards for Best New Writer that year, and Writer of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2009, she completed a Creative Writing module at the University of KZN under the mentorship of author Michael Cawood Green.

Susan now lives in Melbourne, Australia, and shares her life with two cats, a lot of books and her Kindle.

My favourite reading is always something which is slightly historical and I especially enjoy books with dual timelines - a modern-day heroine trying to solve a mystery from history. I prefer standalone books, but I also enjoy books that are part of a series, as long as they don't have to be read chronologically. I'm constantly on the lookout for new books from my favourite authors, including Kerry Greenwood, Alexander McCall Smith and Kate Quinn.(less)

Plus I work a full-time job in theatre so my writing moments are a snatched luxury and there are loads of notes in my notebook to be implemented when I get a chance. I don't worry much when the ideas for my next novel are not forthcoming because I have two trunk novels that I dig out every now and then. I try to rework one or the other, but they are both so awful that whatever I next dream up is always better than re-writing them. Who knows, though? They may both get published one day but I doubt it. (less)

Thirty-three years ago today, I was awakened early in the morning by a persistent knocking on my door in Johannesburg. I had worked later than usual the previous night, and desperately needed that extra hour of sleep, but it was not to be. Whoever was knocking just wouldn’t go away, so I got up and […]

Anne Fortier
“There is lust and then there is love. They are related, but still very different things. To indulge in one requires little but honeyed speech and a change of clothes; to obtain the other, by contrast, a man must give up his rib. In return, his woman will undo the sin of Eve, and bring him back into Paradise.”
Anne Fortier, Juliet

Audrey Hepburn
“Let's face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”
Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn
“Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn't help if your ugly on the inside. Unless you eat the make-up.”
Audrey Hepburn

Winston S. Churchill
“Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.”
Winston S. Churchill

“There is no surer foundation for a beautiful friendship than a mutual taste in literature.”
