Ashwood Falls #3

By Lia Davis

Published by Fated Desires Publishing

Tag Line: She’s given up hope of peace, yet the Alpha’s touch offers promises too hard to run from.

Blurb:

Ashwood Falls’ leopard Alpha, Keegan Andrews holds onto the pain of his deceased mate as his own personal hell—a reminder that not all things are what they seem. The Pack Scribe, Addyson Lewis is no exception. She’s intrigued him like no other since the day she stumbled into Ashwood territory about twenty-five years ago. When he discovers that just being near her calms the storm inside him, he can’t stay away even if it means exposing her to the evil she tried to escape.

Over a hundred years of psychological torture at the hands of the rogue Onyx Pack has left Addyson with no memories of her life before captivity and with the inability to control her psychometric nature. Anything or anyone she touches sends her into their darkest past and secrets, causing her pain she wouldn’t wish on anyone. Without the ability to control it, she’s forced to deny her leopard the connection she craves from the Pack that welcomed her with love and without judgment. That is, until the day Keegan involuntarily touches her bare skin and she finds the peace she’d craved for far too long.

Warning: Contains one sexy alpha leopard who craves the most decadent of dreams, a hidden treasure contained within a spunky woman, and the ability to create a mating bond that’s the most explosive yet.

Chapter One Reveal: Surrendering to the Alpha

SttA Chapter1Reveal

Hello!! I can’t believe it’s a week from RELEASE DAY! Yep that’s SEVEN days. I am happy to share Keegan’s story with you. Here’s the first chapter.

Chapter One

Thirty-seven years ago

Keegan opened the door to his home and was met with silence, although it wasn’t unusual to come home from patrol to a quiet house or an empty one. Cate often visited with other Pack members and had her daily routines.

He stepped inside the foyer, taking in the scent of peaches and Cate. She hadn’t been gone long, he guessed. Entering the kitchen, he felt his lips lift in a small smile as he saw the note on the counter.

Hello, Lover. I went for my walk early so we could have the evening to ourselves. Be back soon.

Love you always,

Cate

A wicked thought entered his mind involving Cate naked and panting beneath him.

He moved to the refrigerator, opened it, and assessed its contents with a frowned. There was an empty milk jug, jar of jelly, and several “mystery” items that he wouldn’t open to save his mate’s life. He closed the door and wondered why she hadn’t gone shopping. It wasn’t like her to forget things like that, or at least it wasn’t until six months ago when they lost their third child.

Keegan shook his head, trying to ease the painful tightening in his chest and turned toward the living room.

A knock on the front door brought him up short. He wasn’t expecting anyone. When he crossed the foyer and opened the door, he was surprised to see Brock, one of his sentries, on the other side.

“Brock.” Keegan gave him a short nod and stepped aside so the male could enter.

The sentry came in and offered a wry smile. Keegan opened his telepathy to allow him to hear Brock’s thoughts. All Keegan heard was Brock reciting Mary Had a Little Lamb over and over. Gritting his teeth, Keegan turned to the living room.

“What is bothering you, Brock?”

The male peered at him as if confused for a brief moment, then shrugged and looked away. Yeah, something was definitely up.

“How is Beth?”

Brock looked back at Keegan and smiled. “My mate is good. A little annoyed that Dani had put her on bed rest until after she delivers the cubs.”

Keegan’s heart warmed at the thought of new life. Beth and Brock were excepting there first…well, first set of cubs. Beth was due to deliver the twins in a few weeks and Danica, the Pack Healer, had put the female on light to no duty. Keegan could just imagine how stir crazy the dominant female was going.

“Brock?” Keegan asked when the male seemed to lose himself in thought, still reciting the damned nursery rhyme in his head.

“Huh? Oh. I was wondering if it would be okay if I take some time off rotation.”

“Sure. Take as much time as you need. I have a few junior soldiers who need the experience.”

Brock relaxed, but only a little. By the way the male rocked on his feet and peered around the room, Keegan knew something else was bothering the sentry.

“Speak your mind, Brock.”

Brock swallowed, but met Keegan’s gaze. “Is Cate home?”

Keegan didn’t stop a low growl from escaping. “She is on her walk.”

“I mean no disrespect. Beth and I love your mate and would never want to…”

“Speak,” Keegan said through gritted teeth.

“Last week when Cate came to visit with Beth…well, my mate said Cate didn’t smell right. Beth said she had a scent on her that was not Pack. I thought that my mate was just having one of those pregnancy side effects or something and paid it no mind.” Brock fell silent.

Keegan counted slowly in his head before saying, “Continue.”

Brock took a deep breath. “I saw Cate the other day, coming in from her walk and wanted to thank her for stopping by to visit with Beth. I smelt it, too.”

Keegan was still counting, still trying to reign in his control and not hit the male standing in front of him for even suggesting what Keegan believed he was. Thoughts of that morning when he used his gift on Cate to ease a nightmare entered his mind. She was dreaming of the Alpha of the rogue Pack Onyx. That couldn’t be it. She was only having a dream, wasn’t she?

Keegan studied Brock, who looked as pale as bleached sand. Keegan didn’t blame the male for being nervous. After all, according to their laws, it was a crime to accuse the Alpha’s mate of betrayal, or anything for that matter.

“What did you smell?”

Brock peered at his feet. “The scent of a rogue.”

Keegan growled, making the male flinch slightly and reached out again to touch Brock’s mind. This time the male let him in to search for the memory. Search for any hint of a lie. What he found made his heart ache and confused the hell out of him.

Brock believed what he said and was also confused by it.

Why would Cate have an encounter with the rogues and not mention it to him or the enforcers or sentries?

Keegan withdrew from the male’s thoughts and turned toward the French doors that led to the backyard. “You are excused. Take all the time you need to be with your mate.”

“Sir, I only told you because I was concerned. If she’d been fighting them on her own…”

Keegan peered at him from over his shoulder. “Thank you, Brock.”

The male nodded and left Keegan alone with his thoughts. Over the past six months, and since they lost their third child after being attacked by a mutant—the half-human, half-animal pawns of the rogue Onyx Pack—Cate had fallen into a deep depression. She forgot things like buying food for the house, and her walks became a little longer each day. Most the time she’d return within an hour. Other times Keegan would have to go search for her only to find her swimming in the creek not far from the outer wards of Ashwood territory.

One thing he didn’t consider until now was the possible reason why she trained with the soldiers. At first he thought it was to keep her mind busy. After all she had trained to be an enforcer as a teen and up until she became an adult and Keegan made his intensions of mating her clear.

Keegan hoped Cate had been using her walks and “alone time” to hunt down the rogues that took their child from them instead of betraying the Pack like her dream suggested. Both scenarios sent a jolt of panic though him that quickly turned to anger.

He’d told her of the dangers of fighting alone. Hell she knew the dangers from her own training and from being the Alpha’s mate.

The front door opened making Keegan whirl around and cast a hard stare at his mate as she entered the living room. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail and there was a hint of surprise in her grey eyes as she met his gaze.

“Oh, you’re home.” She smiled and moved to the hallway. “I’m going to shower and change then start dinner.”

He was in front of her before she took her next step, drawing a gasp from her. He inhaled deeply, taking in her scent and the scent of a rogue. But not just any rogue, no it was Felix, the Onyx Alpha. The same man that order the attack on Ashwood and many other Packs in the southeast region of the United States.

The one male Keegan wanted to bring down and make suffer for destroying his Pack about two hundred years ago. The male that was responsible for the suffering of the members of Ashwood and the loss of his and Cate’s little girl.

“What have you been up to, Cate?”

Fear entered her gaze and she swallowed, hard. Shaking her head, she backed away from him. “Nothing. I…”

Wrong answer.

He growled and stepped forward, his leopard rising to the surface. “Don’t lie to me. I can smell Felix on you.”

Tears sprang in her eyes and overflowed her lips to spill down her cheeks. “I’m so sorry,” she said on a hiccup before she launched forward and grabbed his gun from his holster. Shock froze him in place for a brief moment, but it was all the lead she needed.

Cate flung the back doors open and ran toward the forest. Keegan gave chase. A blanket of fog drifted in heavy and thick in the darkening forest, making it hard to track by sight alone. He scented the air and picked up on her sweet, peachy scent.

His fear fueled the possessive rage building inside. She’d been with Felix.

Keegan couldn’t shake the thought that she might have betrayed him. The thoughts he stole from her mind that morning fueled the panic that settled in his chest. His chest tightened and became hard to breathe through his own fear of what his mate might have planned to do with that gun. Shoving aside the sick feeling deep in his gut, he pushed his legs to run faster to catch her before she did something stupid.

“Cate!”

A twig snapped in the distance to his right, followed by a soft cry, and he turned toward it, desperate to reach her. When he broke through the thick brush, he saw her pushing herself up from the ground. Her watery gaze locked with his, and she raised her shaky hand with the gun in it and pointed it right at him.

He skidded to a stop and held his hands up, palms facing her. “Cate, hon, we can talk about this. Whatever you’ve done, we’ll work it out.”

She shook her head, her long brown curls swaying around her shoulders. “I betrayed you and the Pack. I told Felix our secrets. I didn’t mean to. I mean, I don’t know why I did. I hate him. Oh, God, what have I done?” She broke out into sobs and looked away from him.

Keegan took a step forward. Cate snapped her gaze back to him and thrust the gun toward him in warning. “Stop. Don’t, please. I must die. It’s the law! I can’t let you do it. I love you, and I’m so sorry for being a disappointment to you and the boys.”

She moved the gun to her temple and Keegan screamed, “No,” as she fired. He rushed over, catching her limp body, and fell to his knees with his dead mate pressed into his chest. Tears ran down his face and his chest felt like it was being pried open as he cried, hard. He let out a painful roar as he felt her soul rip from his own, severing their mating bond, leaving him empty and alone inside.

Help finding Hayden and Christa

Hi! Happy Monday!

I took yesterday off from the computer and writing and hung out with my hubby. We bought a new-used truck. It’s a white Toyota Tacoma, 2012 and only has 28K miles on it. Very clean, and a non-smoker owned it before so no allergy issues with me. Yay! It’s practically brand new and everything hubby’s been looking for. He deserves to upgrade from the 1993 Chevy S10 he bought brand new 20 years ago. LOL.

However, today is Monday and that means back to work.

In light of yesterday’s post, I’m opening up a discussion here that will help my muse find Hayden and Christa. They are the Hero and Heroine of Divided Loyalties. You haven’t met Christa yet, so we’ll focus on Hayden. Below are three questions I’d like you to answer to help spark my creative brain into working again. :)

Also feel free to ask questions of your own as well.

What is your impression of Hayden from Ashwood Falls?

Who is he to you?

What type of female do you see him with?

Blocked

For the first time in my writing career I have true writer’s block. I’ve hit little road blocks along the way, but nothing like this. They never lasted this long. usually a couple of days and I’m plugging away at the keyboard again.

Not this time.

I’ve tried bouncing between three different stories to stimulate my muse, give her something different to think about. It usually works. But she’s not having any of that.

My biggest problem is the change from working outside the home to writing full time. I HAVE to write and meet deadlines because it’s now the source of the second income in my household. Now I’m stressing because I missed my first deadline and had to shift my writing schedule around, which also shifted the release schedule around.

Surrendering to the Alpha is set and ready for upload. It will be released around 9/10.

A Rebel’s Heart, Ashwood Falls novella in the Fated Desires’ anthology Ever After, is good to go for the 11/12 release.

The next two books (listed below) don’t have release dates due to me being blocked at the moment. I can’t even set a “to be finished by” date on them. Yeah, it’s that bad. LOL. I’m working on them and trying to figure out what’s wrong.

Divided Loyalties, Ashwood Falls #4 (cover coming soon)

War’s Passion, Sons of War #1

Does this mean I’m giving up? Hell no! I’m not a quicker. I’ll figure out what I need to bring back the focus and get my characters to talk to me again.  It just means a little delay in the next couple of releases. In delay I’m talking weeks not months. In 2014, I’m limiting the number of releases to one every three months with the occasional short story thrown in between. I have a few special projects that I’m working on that I know you all will not be disappoint in. They’ll be great and fun!

Hugs,

Lia

Blurb

Brought together by accident, bound by fate—and magic.  Love works its charm over Bruno DiCesare and Melina Weaver during his transformation from beast to man. But love likewise blinds them to the secrets each holds. Bruno thinks his secret will devastate Melina. Melina’s afraid Bruno will hate her for what she’s become. Neither guess the greatest danger lurks outside their door – and will force them to decide between love and life itself.

Excerpt

Wow, so fast. Melina held Bruno’s hand until his grasp went slack. The treatment seemed to take effect almost as soon as he’d swallowed it. He shouldn’t react immediately; his body should be able to handle it better by this time. Unless Eldie increased the dosage?

Suspicion drew her gaze to the bottle. Of course she couldn’t tell by sight, and she had no idea what ingredients the sorceress had used in the other preparations. She shouldn’t have agreed to it so readily, nor trusted Eldie so blindly. In any other situation, she’d have asked to review the complete specifications.

She stroked Bruno’s arm. I wanted him cured for me as much as for himself. If her selfishness harmed him in any way, she’d carry that guilt forever. Try to make it up to him forever.

For now, she’d have to occupy her mind with something else or drive herself insane. His deep breaths meant he’d sleep for at least a day.

A hushed sigh sounded from the other room.

“Eldie?” Back so soon?

No answer came except for a slight rustle. She crept to the curtain. “Who’s here?”

Even as she asked, she sensed a presence unlike any she’d encountered before. Everything remained as she’d left it, the lamp glowing in the center of the table, laptop beside the scattered books. Lucky the sorceress hadn’t seen them. Luck, or something more.

She returned to the volume she’d left open. A page rippled, lifted straight up and fell over. Another muffled sigh escaped. Melina. The whisper so slight, it was barely audible. Yet without a doubt, she heard her name.

She traced a finger down the spine. It quivered beneath her touch like the plucked string of a guitar. With a gasp, she jerked her hand back.

Uncertain she hadn’t imagined it, she repeated the move and got the same result.

How? She pulled the chair close to the table and examined the pages. Nothing out of the ordinary, except perhaps how finely executed the handwritten entries appeared, each letter as perfect as the last. Almost like they’d been printed to fool the eye of a curious reader. An Italian reader. If only these were in English.

The longer she studied the text, the clearer it became. The letters blurred, shimmered, then shifted, rearranging themselves into… English. She didn’t need to enter the words into the translator site on her laptop, she understood every sentence.

She ran her fingers lightly over the page. The letters shifted again, scattering at her touch, as if she’d disturbed the surface of a pond.

“What the…” It changed back to Italian, the letters appearing to float. She swirled a fingertip across the surface, and the words formed a swarm, like a school of fish following bait. Like fish, they seemed to nibble at the tip of her finger. Impossible, but it tickled.

Fascinating. But this silliness got her nowhere. She’d never learn anything if this kept up. “Stop.”

The scripted words froze in a jumbled, nonsensical order.

She hovered her hand above the passage, and the letters stretched up off the page in tall columns to meet it. The pull of the connection reached inside her skin, as if it had been magnetized.

This is crazy. But obviously it’s not. It’s happening. It’s real.

Still adjusting…

This is my forth week working from home, living my dream of being self-employed. And I’m still adjusting. I’m finding it hard to write during the day. My brain was programmed to write at night and that is when it is most active. I worked a day job and had to take vacation time to meet writing deadlines. Now writing is my day job and I’m finding that during the day, I’m working on admin stuff and stalking Facebook when I should be writing! :p

Well in my defense, I have been working on edits for two stories. Yes TWO. Surrendering to the Alpha is off to the formatter. yay! It releases on or before *wink* 9/10. the second story is the Ashwood Falls novella that will be part of the Fated Desires’ anthology that releases 11/12.

So I have been busy. I did get the first 7 chapters done on War’s Passion and I’m loving those dragons. Although I may have to push back my original October release. Maybe just a week two. the main reason is that I want to give you, my readers, and awesome start to what will be an great new series. To do that I want to take my time and develop an amazing world. I’ll post more information about the Sons of War soon.

Another exciting decision I made was to have a brand new website developed. I won’t start working with the developer for a couple weeks, but I’m excited to finally be working on a site that expresses me and my writing.

So stay tuned for updates. And as always you can find me over at Diamond Authors where I blog on the 15th and 29th of each month. I blog about writing tips over at the Fated Desires Blog every Wednesday. And you can always find me on my Facebook page.

Have a wonderful rest of the week!

HEAT WAVE

Sent into the human realm to retrieve prodigal princess, Zena Night, Bhyrne Raines is shocked and unprepared for his carnal reaction to the sexy succubus. In service to the queen, the rugged enforcer must stifle the instant passion exploding within him. Fulfilling his royal duty doesn’t allow for quickie dalliances, but his biological clock is ticking and he begins to enter breedspawn, an intense and unstoppable frenzy of mating all fire-demon males must endure. And the more he wants to avoid Zena, the more he’s drawn to her.

Zena is reluctant to give up her carefree life of partying among the mortals when the hot-as-sin Bhyrne comes to fetch her for the queen. Using her succubus wiles to entice him, or at least delay the inevitable trip to the royal court, Zena can’t budge him from his mission, although spending more time with the demon isn’t the worst thing that could happen to a girl. But once in the demon stronghold hidden deep within the Catskill Mountains, she learns the reason for the summons: the queen proclaims she must choose a consort within two days.

Zena needs a mate. Bhyrne needs to mate. With time running out for both of them, they each turn to 1Night Stand. Will Madame Eve find a way to solve both problems?

~~EXCERPT~~

Holy freeze gun, Batman. The words died before she managed to expose them to air. Her mouth snapped shut.

One of the Queen’s guards stood before her, huge and tall, nearly twice the size of most of the other males in the joint, a hella hunka supernatural male. Clearly not human, although Hugo Boss’d to his Adam’s apple in an apparent bid to fit in among the humans trolling for hot sex, illicit drugs, watered-down booze and loud music. Beneath the fabric of the unstructured designer suit, the toned muscles of a demonic warrior rolled like tidal waves. Even without the small lapel pin the uninformed might mistake for the The Rolling Stones’ logo, she’d recognize him for a captain of the guard. Maybe the Queen’s own captain.

Hellfire and cotton candy. Trouble. T-R-O-U-B-L-E.

But, by the goddess, whattahottie! Despite her certainty that his presence in the club corridor boded ill for her, the force of her sudden hunger shook her.

Like lightning.

Thunder.

A desperate bolt out of the blue.

Instant connection to him on the paranormal plane, as if he’d wrapped her aura in gold chains and tugged her to him. But did that fast lane to heaven run one way or two?

A grim expression straightened the lines of what otherwise might have been a generous, sensuous mouth. A military buzz cut, the color of iron. And it didn’t stop there. Without doubt, metal fortified every single cell in the massive male’s body, pure titanium flowing in his veins. The stern planes and angles of a hard-edged, swoon-worthy face set grimly as cement. Though he lounged in the hallway like any Archie or Jughead waiting in line to discharge his rented beer in a urinal, he exuded authority, his carriage and bearing such that he made the others look like a pack of Twizzlers. Oh. Yeah. More than a mere guardsman, she guessed. An enforcer.

Ruh-roh.

DIRTY LOVE

A 1Night Stand story by Olivia Starke

BLURB

Kat goes on the prowl looking for a one night stand to rile up her new friends. A little shock and awe to keep her sane in a life no longer hers. When she’s matched with Jared through 1Night Stand, he seems perfect for her plans. Conservative, sweet, and sexy as sin, she’s ready for one hell of a ride.

But Jared is more than she bargained for—much more. And when her plans for amusement turn dangerous will the two find a way to stay alive?

EXCERPT

“Come on.” She winked. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.”

“I thought these things were urban legend. I never imagined I’d see one in real life.”

His date’s gaze glimmered with mischief. “There are lots of big hairy surprises out there for those brave enough to search for them.”

“Like you, for one.” He cleared his throat. “Except for the hairy part. I hope, anyway.”

A slight blush colored her cheeks, and he brushed his knuckles over the soft skin there. Shadows marred the smoothness beneath her eyes. Had she been sick? Or maybe her party girl lifestyle drew out too much. She stepped back.

“Cowboy up, sugar.” She grasped his hand and pulled him forward, again surprising him with her power. Under the softness of her curves lay a fair amount of muscle. He swallowed. She could ride him without tiring, take his maddened pounding for hours. It’d take all night to spend the pent up energy boiling in his veins. He’d passed the point of return; jerking off wouldn’t satiate his needs. Without sex, and soon, he’d run howling through the streets, a crazed animal.

After taking an elevator to the basement level of the parking garage, she led him to a red door and rapped on its freshly painted surface. Dark corners closed in on them. The hairs on his arms and neck rose. He sensed being watched. More cameras. Were as many inside? And maybe a live Internet feed his family could run across in some improbable way?

Don’t create imaginary monsters. He squared his shoulders.

A partition slid open. Dark eyes narrowed, focusing on Kat who lifted a pale brow. The panel slammed closed, and Jared let a small sigh slip. Could he be off the hook? This night had turned out to be more than he’d bargained for, leaving him ready to tuck tail and run. Find somewhere else to indulge his feral wants with his date. The door swung open, and the odor of incense assaulted him. His escape option evaporated.
