K. Bird Lincoln is an ESL professional, breast cancer survivor, and writer living on the windswept Minnesota Prairie with family and a huge addiction to frou-frou coffee. Also dark chocolate-- without which, the world is a howling void. Originally from Cleveland, she has spent more years living on the edges of the Pacific Ocean than in the Midwest. Her speculative short stories are published in various online & paper publications such as Strange Horizons. Her medieval Japanese fantasy series, Tiger Lily, is available from Amazon. World Weaver Press released Dream Eater, the first novel in an exciting, multi-cultural Urban Fantasy trilogy set in Portland and Japan, in 2017 and is now complete with the epic conclusion, Last Dream of Her Morta ...more

Book Review: (YA horror) 5 stars, The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst

The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst

I enjoyed Durst’s fantasy Queen series and Race the Sands, so despite YA horror not being one of my main genres, I knew I could trust myself in Durst’s capable hands.

Trust.

Durst’s signature emotional character development is all based on trust. Three girls, all underestimated and not trusted to make decisions about themselves are sent to a summer camp by a Lake– o

“Loss is like a shrapnel wound, I said, where the piece of metal's got stuck in a place where the surgeons daren't go, so they decide to leave it. It is painful at first, horribly painful, so that you wonder you can live with it. But then the body grows around it, until it doesn't hurt anymore. Not like it used to be. But every now and again there are these twinges when you are not ready for them, and you realize it is still there, and it's always going to be there. It is a part of you. A still, hard point inside.”
