Chris Hardwick's View of Nerds
Chris Hardwick is a stand-up comic, FOWW (Friend of Wil Wheaton) and creator of The Nerdist empire - website, podcasts, and now a BBC America TV show - same channel that has Doctor Who, Sherlock, ST:TNG, and BSG. So, big-ass nerd-cred, and let me say up front, kudos.
So I was watching the latest promo for the BBCAM Nerdist show, and they're listing all the fields of Nerd-dom that Hardwick & Co are investigating.
Here's the promo.
The theme is "We welcome all kinds of nerds!" Cosplay nerds, game nerds, tech nerds, pop culture nerds, music nerds, and on, and on. And this is all great. Really.
But did you miss the one kind of nerd he didn't mention? The one activity that has defined nerd-dom for decades?
Books.
Reading.
I think that's significant.

Blackadder
Chances are you know
Blackadder
the BBC TV series. (If not, why not? Seriously, go watch some television!)I'd always thought that Curtis and Elton had made up the name as something suitably villainous. Turns out there actually was a Clan Blackadder in the Scottish Borderlands. Go figure.

My College Now Has More Nerd Cred Than I Do
Seems that Columbia, my alma mater, has acquired the entire original Elfquest archive - drawings, scripts, notes, finished sheets, the works! When I want there, it was filled with PIBs (People in Black) who smoked clove cigarettes, wore ear clips and listened to Depeche Mode. Now they actually have a Graphic Novels Librarian.
I was born too early. Sigh.

Ditching a Whole Story Line
So I've been futzing with this urban fantasy for a couple of years now. I have a story arc that makes sense and is appropriately creepy. It works. Or at least it should...but I can't quite make it happen.
I think I've figured out why. I really like the world I've set up, and the story line will take my protagonist out of that world pretty quickly. So I'm considering Going Back to Square Two - that is, keeping all my characters and worldbuilding, but using a different story.
We'll see...
