Probably the most prolific diary writer in the history of the world, I have been obsessively recording my crushes on females since the age of fourteen. I currently clock up half a million words per year, but never let on to the woman I'm dating that I jot down everything she says and does.

I LOVED my all-girls public school. Apart from mercilessly hounding Miss Williams, with whom I fell in love at first sight at the age of twelve, I was a model pupil. In my early twenties I swapped my Latin homework for drug-taking and squatting.

Having sported an 'I LOVE MISS WILLIAMS' tattoo on my left wrist for eleven years, I finally tired of the inane questions it encouraged and got a cover-up in 1999.

Hi Elin,
Thank you so much for getting in touch and letting me know that you appreciate my book. The only other book that I have come across that looks at female pupils crushing on female teachers is the hilarious 1979 by Rhona Cameron, which is also a true story.

I have just published a new book—a Q&A collaboration with Helena Whitbread, author of The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister. Anne was a wealthy lesbian diarist who lived two centuries before our time.

The obsessive stalker story line drew me in. I loved the first person account and the whole narrative addressed to 'you.' Because we're in psycho Joe's head the whole time, his justifications for murder and kidnapping are chillingly unjudged.

I had read a number of Bill Bryson's books and have loved them. But this reads like a cash-in of his 20-years-earlier hilarious classic, Notes from a Small Island. It's still well written, amusing (occasionally hilarious), and informative. But it fel ...more

“. . . hell is wanting to be somewhere different from where you are. Being one place and wanting to be somewhere else . . . . Wanting life to be different from what it is. That's also called leaving without leaving. Dying before you die. It's as if there is a part of you that so rails against being shattered by love that you shatter yourself first. (p. 44)”

Alice Sebold
“I wondered if this longing in a three-year-old had sparked what came at eight. That fuzzy feeling of difference, that her crushes on female teachers or her cousin were more real than the other girls' crushes. Hers contained a desire beyond sweetness and attention, it fed a longing, beginning to flower green and yellow into a crocuslike lust, the soft petals opening into her awkward adolescence. It was not so much, she would write in her journal, that she wanted to have sex with women, but that she wanted to disappear inside of them forever. To hide.”

Natasha (Diarist) Holme Excellent, Carol. Thanks for friending me back :-) I'll let you know when my book's next free (Amazon Kindle) promotion day is just on the off-chance that I might be fortunate enough to tempt you to give it a glance ...

A Voracious Reader (a.k.a. Carol) Hi, Natasha! Thanks for the Friend Invite. I may not be crazy about non-fiction or biographies, but I have been known to venture forth into those mostly unknown (to me) territories. lol In fact, I just reviewed my brother's book which hit the bottom 3 of my favorite genres list (non-fiction, history, biography). So all is not hopeless when it comes to me. :D
