Thanks for visiting me on Goodreads!

I grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and if I didn't have my face in the water (swimming, playing water polo), most likely I had my nose in a book.

I moved to California to go to college and play more water polo, and now I'm an English teacher, coach, mom, and YA writer.

I love rainstorms, Star Wars, sushi, cooking, and discovering new books to read.

My first YA novel, THE COUNTERFEIT FAMILY TREE OF VEE CRAWFORD-WONG, was recently published by Simon&Schuster. Please give it a read - and maybe even a review!

It is still somewhat of a miracle to me that people (people I don't even know!) are reading something I made up. I LOVE to hear from readers. I want people to enjoy my stories and use them to reflect on their own lives/world. When I hear that I've done that, well, it makes my day. Okay, I meant my month. At least.(less)

I have a target word count for every writing day, and I text my hubby when I've reached it. (He's a sales guy - very into incentives and accountability. Very helpful!) I'm getting better at actually writing an outline; knowing what scene(s) I'm working towards helps me move things forward. Though, to be honest, meandering isn't always a bad thing - I often figure out some key things about my characters when I put them in unexpected situations.(less)

The illustrations in this book are wonderful - but a bit misleading as they make the book seem scarier than it actually is. I read this aloud to my 5 and 7 year old, and they BEGGED for more every night. (We were all so into it that I actually finish ...more

This is an entertaining, light read that is well-written and clever. Lara Jean is a believable protagonist and in fact isn't much likeable at the beginning. (I always admire writers whose writing and tension is strong enough to pull this off! I don't ...more

This is an enjoyable, meandering book where the chapters are framed by the author's own educational experience. I particularly enjoyed the history and commentary on California's system, seeing that I didn't grow up in CA or in Buzbee's era. I also ap ...more

“I was missing lectures leading up to an essay test, so I went downstairs & got my textbook & pretended to study, with Animal Planet playing in the background. Everyone we learned about was either white or some sort of predecessor of the white, Christian world--as if the Stone Age, Bronze Age & Iron Age were just Greek & Roman stepping stones. As if everyone outside of Europe was still grunting & digging for grubs. As if China, centuries before Jesus started squalling in his crib, hadn't already kicked Europe's ass in technology & art.”
