If you enjoy memoirs about people who decide to uproot their lives and move someplace new and fascinating, you will probably enjoy this book. I did, but I suspect it's probably not for everyone. It certainly did make me want to visit Prague.

This novel is an absolute literary treat, an incredibly well-constructed story of a murder allegedly pieced together from historical documents. The writing is fantastic, the characters excellent, and the plotting intricate. I felt like the ending did ...more

I really enjoyed this book and probably read the others in the series, but it's definitely not for everyone. The satire is very specific to academic life, and sometimes laid on excessively thick. Still, I found it very funny and will read on. It's al ...more

Very thought-provoking book which helped change the way I think about writing assignments for my students. Folks outside of composition studies might find it dense at times, but the core ideas are important enough to make it worth the effort.

" Same for me as Drew, Joe. I've only read the one, but it seems like it's the one that caught everyone's attention! I think you will love it. "

The most enjoyable book I have read in a very long time. I could praise so much about it, but will limit myself to four things: a brilliant premise, as we follow the history of Russia in the early 20th century through the eyes of a former aristocrat ...more

I read this book when it first came out and thought it was very eye-opening. This time around, I saw it differently. Ehrenreich's experiments in her three locations barely last a month each, and she never really stays anywhere long to really understa ...more

The writing in this book is gorgeous, and the historical and natural history excellent. I loved the premise as well, and really wanted to love this book. I almost loved it, but the plotlines felt too diffuse to me, and I was not really pulled into th ...more

Entertaining travelogue about an Englishman and his wife and four children who buy a dilapidated house in the Greek countryside. Nothing too profound here, but it was an enjoyable read on a plane ride home from Greece!

“No Child Left Behind has diminished [teachers'] sense of control of their own classroom, narrowed the focus of their jobs, and stifled pedagogical innovation.”
James M. Lang, Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty

“You will be doing your students a much greater service by reducing the amount of material that you are covering and actually ensuring that students are learning it, rather than making sure that you are ticking off everyone checkpoint in your ideal syllabus. Learning comes from practice, and you have to help and teach your students to practice just as you help and team them the basic knowledge and skills of your discipline.”
James M. Lang, Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty
