A to Z Challenge – E is for Einherjar
As part of the A to Z Challenge for the month of April. I’m posting about my Valkyrie world. I will try to present elements of the world without being too spoilerific ;)
So today is the letter E which stands for Einherjar.
Within the world of the Valkyrie series I’ve used a number of different creatures. Bear in mind that I have taken a tiny bit of artistic licence in using the Norse mythological creatures in Bryn’s world.
Einherjar
Pronounced Ein (as in Mine) heR (as in Hair with the emphasis on a rolling R) YaR (as in Tar, again with an emphasis on a rolling R) Hopefully that makes sens.
Einherjar are the Warriors of Asgard who live in Valhalla and serve Odin. Essentialy they are dead warriors reborn (Norse Zombies anyone?) Only those who live a courageous life will be chosen to enter Valhalla. Warriors of old were collected on the battlefield, where Valkyries would come down from Asgard and search the fields of slain men, choosing only the courageous and brave to take with them to Valhalla.
In the Valkryies series, the goat Heidrun produces a special Mead that revitalises the warriors, healing wounds and broken bones and easing pain. They live in Valhalla which is a gigantic longhouse that can hold hundreds of thousands of warriors. It is magical in that an endless number of warriors can be housed withins its walls.
Also in the Valkyrie series, every few months the warrior goddess Freya comes to Asgard from Helheim where she lives. According to an agreememnt between Odin and Freya, a ceremony is performed in which the warriors are divided into two groups, half going to Freya to be take to Hel, and the other half remaining in Asgard. In this way the two regiments of Asgard are able to grow and train together as separate powerful units.
*SPOILER*
In The Valkyries series I’ve given Bryn the power to see people glow. A stange power that confuses her for a lot of her life, she eventually realises that those glowing people die soon afterward. The glow is the way the Valkyries are able to identify the courageous living in order to allow her to prepare to take them to Valhalla after their burial. Also, in this series, people fram all walks of life, and both men and women, can become Einherjar.
Friends
Not a spoiler but more of a hint ;)
Also in the Valkyrie series, Bryn goes to Asgard thinking she is alone, but she soon finds out that she has more than one familiar face to keep her company in Odin’s realm.

A to Z Challenge – D is for Dwarfs
As part of the A to Z Challenge for the month of April. I’m posting about my Valkyrie world. I will try to present elements of the world without being too spoilerific ;)
So today is the letter D which stands for Dwarfs.
Within the world of the Valkyrie series I’ve used a number of different creatures. Bear in mind that I have taken a tiny bit of artistic licence in using the Norse mythological creatures in Bryn’s world.
Dwarfs
Within Bryn’s world she comes into contact with a few Dwarfs. Dwarfs live in the realm of Swartelfheim, and are best known for their ability to forge weapons and other special items for the gods.
Bryn has that opportunity to visit Swartelfheim to bring back a special goblet made by the old King. His evil wife was in control of the Kingdom, something both her sons disliked. In the Valkyrie Series, the dwarfs are short and stocky but have the ability to use glamor to hide their true features. They love drinking and dancing, and have a penchant for stealing maidens from all the realms, elves, humans and Huldra alike.
Brisingamen
The beautiful amber stoned necklace that belongs to the goddess Freya – made for her by the dwarfs. It is called the circle of suns for its unparalled beauty and Loki made it a game to repeatedly steal the necklace from Freya.
In the Valkyrie Series, pieces of Brisingamen were found at the archealogical digsite at which Brynhildr was found. One peace was reset and given to Bryn by her father. Little did he know what trouble that would cause.
In addition, the dwarfs created Odin’s golden spear Gungnir, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir.

A to Z Challenge – C is for Creatures
As part of the A to Z Challenge for the month of April. I’m posting about my Valkyrie world. I will try to present elements of the world without being too spoilerific ;)
So today is the letter C which stands for CREATURES.
Within the world of the Valkyrie series I’ve used a number of different creatures. Bear in mind that I have taken a tiny bit of artistic licence in using the Norse mythological creatures in Bryn’s world.
Ravens
Hugin and Munin are Odin’s two ravens. Hugin means ‘thought’ and Munin translated to ‘memory’. They are devoted to the All-Father and can be found scouring the globe for information to take back to Odin. So Odin will probably win every game of Trivial Pursuit he plays cos his general knowledge will be out of this world.
Wolves
Geri & Freki ar Odin’s two wolves who follow him everywhere her goes. They protect him, keep him company and will even kill for him. Both their names means ‘ravenous’ or ‘greedy’ and they have the power of glamor, to make themselves invisible so that they don’t always freak people out. So if you see Odin, don’t make any sudden moves. Chances are Geri and Freki will make mincemeat out of you. ;)
Eight-legged Horses
Sleipnir is Odins’s steed, his personal means of transport. The strangest part of Sleipnir’s birth is that he is the son of Loki. The story goes that the gods made a bet with a builder, and believing he is sure to win because of his special horse, Svailfari, who helped him construct buildings really fast. Loki took it upon himself to ensure the horse did not complet the task in time. As part of his attempt to distract Svailfari, Loki turned himself into a female horse and ran into the woods. Svailfari gave chase and Loki kept him entertained. Said entertainment resulted in the birth of Sleipnir. So Loki is the only male god to have given birth to his own child.
Goat
Heidrun is the hardworking goat of Valhalla who produces the delicious and regenerative Mead for the warriors of Asgard. Bryn has taken a liking to the Mead and would likely find herself addicted to the stuff given half a chance.

A to Z Challenge – B is for Blood
I’ve elected to participate in the A to Z Challenge for the month of April. I’ve decided to post about my Valkyrie world since I’m currently writing the final book in that series and it will be easier for me to think about what to blog. I will try to present elements of the world without being too spoilerific ;)
So today is the letter B which stands for BLOOD.
Blood takes an important role in the story of Bryn and her life as a Valkyrie.
In the first instance, Bryn’s father eminent geneticist Dr Geoffrey Halbrook had a secret passion. He liked to play with genes. He was also involved in assisted conception because he and his wife Irene had found it difficult to conceive. What better than to splice some DNA, add a little something extra to the mix and maybe make a special child. You gotta hand it to the man, he dreamed big, but I don’t think he knew what a can of worms he was opening. Wonder what he’d think if he knew his daughter was a Valkryie reborn, that the very genes he stole from an ancient digsite in Norway, was in actuality the genes of the legendary warrior princess Brynhildr, a Valkyrie of Asgard, and that he created a range of life-threatening problems for his only child.
Blood also plays and impportant part in the lives of the Asgardian warriors. Of the Valkyries, Ulfr and einherjar, the most vulnerable are reborn warriors, those chosen from the courageous dead of Midgard or Earth as we know it. When Loki discovers the Asgardians had created a special Kevlar like armor to protect the warriors he and Dr Lee find a way to penetrate that armor.
Using Bryn’s blood and a substance found in Jotunnheim, the land of the frost giants, Dr Lee creates a black poisonous gloop that is deadly to those who are becoming warriors, those courageous dead who glow as a sign of their future in Valhalla. Loki decimates the numbers of warriors coming to Valhalla, one of the ways he actively trys to reduce Odin’s Army. Loki’s plan succeeds, leaving Bryn to blame herself because it was her blood that provided the key to the poison’s success.

A to Z Challange – A is for Armor
I’ve elected to participate in the A to Z Challenge for the month of April. I know. I am crazy.
But I have committed and hopefully I can keep up the posts. I’ve decided to post about my Valkyrie world since I’m currently writing the final book in that series and it will be easier for me to think about what to blog. I will try to present elements of the world without being too spoilerific ;)
So today is the letter A which stands for ARMOR. (or Armour if you speak English English)
In the Valkyrie series, the warriors of Asgard all wear armor, and depending on whether they are Valkyries, Warriors (einherjar) or Ulfr (wolves), they all wear different styles of armor.
When not in battle, the Valkyries wear knee or ankle length silk dresses of varying colors, over which they use bronze or silver moulded breast plates, and arm braces, all carved with the snaking Norse designs. The Valkyries also wear head gear which I have depicted to look similar to this:
In my verion of Asgard, the warriors use black chainlink armor that is so finely woven it looks like fabric. After Bryn’s arrival it is discovered that the leaves of the legendary golden Glasir tree, when mixed with the metal used to make the armor, creates a Kevlar type protective quality. It is also supple, and very comfortable. With the new use of this new, almost impenetreable armor, Loki must find a more unique way to attack the warriors. And so he does.
And that I talk about in tomorrows post ;)

The Glam life of a Writer
I’ve written in coffee shops before, and each time was a interesting experience, but it wasn’t until I realised how much I’ve been lagging with my daily word count, that I decided to get out of the house and go somewhere that the internet is only available if you ask for it. And I’m the type of person who would go without the sugar if the waitress looked too busy/was ignoring me.
So last week I headed out to a coffee shop at our local mall, plonked myself on a soft seat (thankfully) and pulled out my ipad. I got in 2k in 3 hours, being a little distracted by my quickly decreasing iPad power (because yes, I hadn’t charged it fully, and no there was no convenient power socket.) It just seemed I wasn’t getting in the zone. But it was 3k that I would likely not have done at home (read that as would definitely not have done). And I got to have some not so great tea – looked good, didn’t taste so good. Maybe I prefer good old Sri Lankan tea courtesy of a lifetime of Five Roses Tea. At least they had gluten free cupcakes! That was a plus.
I tried again last Saturday, only visiting a different coffee shop this time, one attached to our local bookstore. The coffee here was fabulous, Foto below. The writing was awesome and I got in 3k in 3 hours which was likely because I managed to attach myself to the only available plug point. (well spotted) low stress environement! Starting off with a nice plate of pancakes certainly helped.

Tried this out again this Monday and boom 4k in 3 hours. (Notice the wordcount increase??) Feels great. Wrote 6k in total that so so rocked.
So that was 20k in the space of 3 writing days which I still think is not good enough but hey, I know I can write faster. Still, I think I have found my new favourite thing to do, only problem I foresee is generating the funds to subsidise this new passion.
So I have finally made it – I am a total coffee shop writer – and proud of it!

BEAUTIFUL COLLISION Chapter 1
BEAUTIFUL COLLISION is a contemporary suspense novel that focuses on human trafficking. My intent is to create an awareness that human trafficking exists whether it is to supply the sex trade, or the slave trade. The novel begins a young girl who is running from a Mafia boss, thinking she has eluded him she attempts to settle down into a normal life, but unbeknownst to her, the actions of a number of different people soon begin to impact on her.

CHAPTER ONE
–Gray–
I know what the deer feels like when the hunter has her in his sights, has the barrel of his rifle aimed at her head, finger slowly pressing down on the trigger. Every step, every breath I take feels like its on borrowed time and I hate it with such a passion that it makes that iron fist that always holds onto my gut, tighten with vicious enjoyment.
My muscles in my throat are taut as I turn my head and allow my eyes to travel up and down the busy street. I squint against the sun streaming down on my head. Its cheerful brightness mocks me. The oversize sunglasses help against the glare, and maybe it helps to hide me a little too. I dont know. If someone is watching me right now Ill never be able to tell. I plan to get better at it soon.
Or else Im going to be the one looking down the barrel of a gun.
My heart thuds as I cross Larkin and enter the cool hall of San Franciscos main public library. I push the sunglasses up onto my head and scan the hall as I keep moving. The atrium is enough to stop any visitor in their tracks, high and airy and all glass, but I dont stop to stare because I have a purpose. Im not here to sight-see. I follow the signs to the first floor, worn sneakers silent on the marble floor tiles.
As I move I tug the leather cuff on my right wrist, ensuring it stays in place. The leather hides a truth that Id rather not see. Call it denial, but I havent fallen apart yet so out of sight, out of mind has helped me this far.
I enter General Fiction and inhale the unique scent of books; ink and dust and paper. I hurry along the silent aisles, reading off the spine labels under my breath, in search of Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake. I smile, thinking how strange that Alexei would even know who Blake was.
But maybe I am being naive. How would I know what kind of life Alexei had led when Id known him for only the briefest time. I hadnt seen the old man in weeks and a few times Id wondered how smart it was to have contacted him in the first place. Hed given me his card, yes, but that didnt mean I should have used it. It didnt mean I should have made him part of my problem.
My heels squeak on the polished wood floor, and the sound echoes around me. Too loud. I look around from beneath nondescript black bangs that skim my eyebrows, the edge jagged much like the rest of my short wig.
I look around. The room was far from empty, with the nearest person being a young guy his nose in a book as he stands beside a showcase of the latest bestsellers. Hes harmless.
My heart thumps and I try to calm my nerves. Im careful, Im aware. Nothings going to happen. And yet . . . Im still nervous. I slip into a row and immediately Im hemmed in by shelves that rise a foot higher than the top of my head. If Ive disturbed anyone or drawn attention from the wrong sort, I cant tell now.
I lift my weight onto the balls of my feet, and hurry down the aisle. Moving quickly, I find the Bs, and run a finger along the spines until I reach Blake. It takes seconds to find Songs, and I feel a sudden stab of fear. What if someones loaned out the copy I need? What then? Keep coming back for that particular copy? How would I explain why I want that specific book? Why hadnt I thought this through?
I stiffen with fear.
Get a grip, Gray. Dont borrow trouble. Thats what Dad used to say. Dont go worrying about something that hasnt happened yet, Gray. If you want to worry, just let the crap happen first. You never know, you just might have nothing to worry about in the end.
Good advice.
Taking a deep breath, I tilt the book toward me. A fine layer of dust coats the tops of the surrounding books and only my copy is clean. I slide it out and I hold its weight in my hand, then flip open the back cover.
My heart slams against my ribs. Please be the right one, I pray even when I know praying is stupid. What use are prayers when nobody hears them. I run my fingers over the paper that covers the hard surface of the inside cover. There. A small bump beneath the surface. Just where Alexei had said it would be.
I shut the cover and exit the stacks, forcing my gait to remain relaxed, my neck to stay calm. Anyone watching would see a girl with short cropped dark hair, long bangs, sloppy jeans and sneakers, off to the tables to read a book or to study. Not a girl so scared out of her wits, that the hands holding the book have a slight tremor to them.
I force myself to stroll to a desk at the far end of the library, one thats hidden from prying eyes. I sit and try hard not to look around. Nonchalant. I have to act like I have no care in the world. It has taken weeks to learn to stop looking behind me all the time, to learn that even from a distance a person could notice the small things like the tightness in your neck or shoulder that indicates awareness and the desire to flee, that indicates fear. Sure, Id learned not to look like I was running from something, but that didnt mean Id stopped completely. So, I cant afford to get careless.
I whisper the words under my breath, like a prayer, over and over again. Get careless, get dead. Its kept me alive so far.
I calmly set the book on the table before me. I can see the age of the paper, yellow with ragged edges. I reach for the knife inside my bag, its nothing more than a letter-opener but it will do the job. I slide the sharp edge beneath the overlying paper glued to the hard back cover. The glue stretches, like strings of a stubborn cobweb. The knife slips through them, snapping the threads and releasing the paper to reveal what hides beneath.
A slim brown envelope.
Alexei had come through for me. I slide the envelope out of the space and close the book softly. With a sigh of relief, I shove the envelope into my stained backpack before throwing it over my shoulder. I grab the book and saunter back to the stacks to return it to its place. Then, my heart thudding, I head out of the library and down the stairs slowly, as if I have no place to be.
Emerging into the sunlight, I slide my sunglasses onto my face and skip down the steps. I scan the street, the cars, the bus that slows down at the stop, the trees across the street. So many faces but none seem interested in me. I dont give myself the chance to enjoy any sense of relief. I turn and head home.
Or what I consider home for the next five minutes. I used to hear people say Home is where the heart is but what about when you dont have a heart or if you have no place in the world that you care to be in? What then? Well, then even a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere will do. Nobody even looks at the homeless anymore. And it saddens me that I must take advantage of the cold heart and the blind eye of society.
I have to make one stop before I am on my way. Hiding isnt easy when you cant cook yourself a meal, when food must be stolen or begged for, or the cheapest takeout available.
I walk in the direction of the nearest burger place. It doesnt matter which one, as long as I can grab a couple of dirt-cheap burgers. I stand waiting for my order, head down, scanning faces beneath my lashes. Im always watching, always searching.
The boy in the black jeans, skateboard in hand, could be anyone. FBI, undercover cop, killer for hire. Or maybe hes just a kid with a skateboard. I sigh to myself, the always on edge feeling rests against my chest like a tangible thing. Like one of those round weights that fit on the end of a barbell, maybe a fifty pound weight will be appropriate for what hangs around my heart.
My order is called and I grab the bag and head out into the fresh air, breathing deeply of sunshine and suspicion as I walk faster and faster. When I look behind me, skater boy is watching me, bag in hand. Then he crosses the street and rips his paper bag open, his eyes only for his burger.
I suppress the sigh of relief, then snap my gaze back to my route, the roundabout way I use so as to lose anyone who may be on my trail. Im always careful, doubling back, watching out for anyone suspicious, eyes always peeled, bones always tense, jaw always tight. So much tension, but my life depends on it.
