I rested against the pillows and opened the bag. Just the action of baring the tooth to the air was enough to start me up. The tooth helped – plenty of feedback from the child, which was a good thing. It meant I’d be able to piggyback on the tangible link between Samantha and what was essentially part of her body.

I tipped the incisor onto the bare skin of my palm and was slammed back into the pillows, as hard as taking a punch to the gut. The link was strong – the regular thud of a heartbeat assured me immediately that the girl was alive. I didn’t have time to enjoy the relief. The next thing I smelled was blood and I didn’t dare to imagine what that meant. All I could sense was a rich odor, coppery aftertaste.

I couldn’t be sure the blood didn’t belong to the girl and I couldn’t be sure it did, so no sense in panicking. Wherever Samantha Cross was right now, she was alive.

But it didn’t mean she’d stay that way.

Words don’t come easy…

​I had a conversation with a friend recently. She called me a machine because I sometimes rock up huge ass wordcounts. She was geniunely proud of me, but she also made me realise that to someone on the outside it looks rather easy. Sit down, tap away for a few hours and voila . . . words. More voila . . . a whole novel. Yay.

It isn’t.

There are good days, and bad days, and even worse days.

There are good words and bad words and yeah, even worse words.

Sometimes a book flows, the story blossoms, and the first drafts is simply beautiful.

And sometimes it’s utter tripe and you spend days, days and more days editing it and hating it and wanting to burn it but you can’t because it’s on your Mac and Macs are not cheap.

And yes, sometimes I do write 13000 words in a day. Often I’m happy with a lot of them. But the next day I may write all of 30 words and then I feel like crap and I’m pretty sure I suck as a writer cos my wordcount says it all and what am I if I can’t create more than a freaking sentence in a day apart from a total utter fraud?

And then I take a step back and accept that not all days are equal, and not all words are equal. Sometimes a book is so easy it to create it leaves you standing a little off kilter, wondering what just happened.

Then life makes up for it by throwing you a hot mess to fix, just to remind you that you’re not all that, and maybe it’s time to get back to work.

So…

Accounting programs don’t like me

Warning: Rant

What’s worse than having no voice, catching the flu, having to revamp your manuscript to a tight deadline, and having your taxes due in 9 days?

Spending 30 hours of fever-ridden, headache-infused time on inputting Chart of accounts, customers, suppliers, and bank statement,, and having the app constantly hang in the middle of reconciliation.

Before I even started I had to cancel the automatic download of the bank statements cos the app needed me to use a third party for credit cards – not happening.

Then I find out their Android app only gives you balances. You can’t enter transactions or reconcile anything.

And today, every click of the enter button ends with . . . nothing. The site cannot be reached because servers blah blah and more blah.

So yeah. It’s back to Excel spreadsheets, pivot tables and lever arch files. Serves me right for getting too big for my boots and trying actual accounting technology.
