Excited about the lunch time approaching in less than an hour, I couldn’t wait to hit the gym with my man. Last night had been one hell of a night. My feet were hurting because of the new shoes, but that wasn’t going to stop me. I checked my mailbox, smiling to see all emails taken care of. My stomach was already demanding food, but the gym sounded more appealing.

“Babe, I can’t make it to the gym. Candice asked me to check a few things with her.”

"I beg your pardon.”

“I know what you’re doing and this is going to stop now. Calvin and I are together, we are a couple. You better accept it.”

"Or what?” she asked with a hint of a smile. “You’re using work to get to him and to push me away. I won’t let it happen. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Me neither. I’m sorry, Iris, but I have work to do. Will you excuse me?”

The nerve that tramp had. My body trembled with anger, my fists were ready to attack. I despised her. She enjoyed making my life here a real nightmare. “I’m not done with you. I will find a way to get to you, I promise. Calvin will see your true colors.”

"Oh, Iris,” she said using an almost innocent voice. “How was the lingerie shopping? Did Calvin spend a small fortune on lace? I know...”

I cut her off, getting as close as possible to her, almost threatening her.

"You are...” I stopped myself just in time. I couldn’t see clearly anymore. “You know exactly what you are.” I could still hear the anger in my voice. Her mind games were getting the best of me.

"Babe.” Calvin showed up at the door of Candice’s office, looking perplexed. My eyes found his, but I quickly looked away. I couldn’t explain myself, I had gone mad. I hurried to my office hoping he would follow me so I could try to explain myself, but he didn’t.

Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here since 1977. I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and I live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie. I have cut firewood on shares. I worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway.

My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word.

Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much, I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. My love and I were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.

No fuss.

Another woman raised her hand and bid two hundred, and I squinted into the audience to see who it was. She was seated in the shadows on the other side of the bright lights, and I couldn’t make her out. Shirley bid three hundred and I figured that would be the end of it, but then the woman I couldn’t see stood and shouted loudly, “I’ll take him for a thousand.”

The room went dead silent, and I was honestly waiting for her to say, Oh, I’m sorry, I take back my bid, but the announcer called out that I was sold for one thousand dollars. I was speechless and stared into the crowd to see the crazy woman jumping up and down and screaming her excitement at having won.

Did the woman think she was bidding on someone else? She did know I was the prize, didn’t she? I started to descend the stairs and by the time I reached the bottom, this whirlwind of bright red hair threw itself at me and wrapped strong arms around my neck.

What the hell? Who was this woman? I didn’t know any ladies with hair this bright. I turned to ask for help from the guys on the stage and found them all laughing.

The woman finally unwrapped herself from me and landed on her feet in front of me. She was a pipsqueak of a woman, maybe five foot, if that.

“You have no idea how excited I am! I can’t believe I won a date with you!” She tugged me back towards her table while some of the townspeople laughed and whispered amongst themselves. “I have wanted to meet you for so long, and I can’t believe I won you!” She bounced a bit more as she reached her seat, and I gaped at her. “I can’t wait to go out with you. It’s going to be so much fun.”

“Wait,” I held up my hands to stop her prattling long enough for me to ask her a question: “Who are you?”

“You asked what I remembered. I told you. I’m not in the habit of making jests with my enemies.”

“Monsieur Palmer, we are not your enemy. We are not at war.” A long moment passed and then Berger asked, “What year do you believe it to be?”

“The year of our Lord, 1356.”

“Mon Dieu,” Cloutier said in the background.

“From what the paramedics told us you said when they arrived, and your answer today, I am convinced that you do believe this is 1356. Monsieur Palmer,” Berger covered Stephen’s hand with his own. “The year is 2013.”
