I hate deadlines because they take creative control out of my hands and put a date on it, a date that does not always allow me to back away from the work and then come forward, as I tend to do. I can't write well if all I am doing is coming toward it. I have to pull away and take walks, or cook, be quiet in some way. When I cleaned houses for a living I had the perfect balance between writing in the morning before going to work, and being alone but physical during the day. My subconscious did a lot of work while I cleaned someone other people's houses.(less)

On the one hand, I really want to be finished and move on to something else. On the other, I am completely bereft. I miss my characters and the story so much. I miss the daily writing. I think I will start something again right away, but I never do. I've come to believe that there are stages between the completion of one novel and the beginning of another. For me the characters still linger, and I'm not yet ready for such an intense experience again. The best thing for me is to spend lots of quiet time alone and in nature.(less)

If you must break a date with the muse, it’s best to be upfront about it. First of all tell her that you’re not going to be meeting her at the time you planned to. Give her your reason why.

If you’ve got a lot on your plate, all that time-sensitive grown-up stuff that we all get caught up in now and again. Tell her you’re sorry, but you’ve got all this time-sensitive grown-up stuff to do. Be ver...

Nancy Peacock added a status update: I stopped reading when I read this: "Holocaust, eating disorder. Same thing." Joke, I suppose. I found it unfunny.

I was interviewed for this book. When I received a copy from the author as a thank-you for my time, I was not in a good place with my writing. But I was in a familiar place - a place of exhaustion which left me questioning the point of it all. I did ...more

"One day I took all my SARK books done from the shelf and re-read them. I forgot how comforting they can be. This was one I hadn't read, so I took it out of the library. These are great comfort books, remind us all that we're a work in progress."

I liked this book, but felt it could have been written more succinctly.
However - the subject is fascinating. The two stories do, eventually, wind together and touch each other.
