As announced today by WIRED MAGAZINE, DC Comics will be launching NATIONAL COMICS this July. The series will include a series of extra-sized one-shots spotlighting new takes on obscure or little known characters. The first issue is one of my favourite old DC and Vertigo Characters, KID ETERNITY, written by me with art by the talented CULLY HAMNER (his amazing cover featured above).
So make sure to let your local comic shop know to reserve you a copy of this special 48-page story, described below!
NATIONAL COMICS #1: KID ETERNITY, written by Jeff Lemire with art by Cully Hamner will center around Eternity. This is the story of police coroner Christopher Freeman. After being given a second chance on life, he finds himself with the ability to resurrect the dead. Freeman uses his new ability to help those he resurrects to find their murderers and to gain closure, so they can continue to the other side.

STEVE PUGH JOINS ANIMAL MAN!

As announced today on DC's Blog, THE SOURCE the talented STEVE PUGH will be the new artist on ANIMAL MAN!
A big reason I love the Animal Man character so much is because of the work Steve did on the character back in the 90's with Jamie Delano. In fact, I don't think it would be a stretch to say that I have been heavily influenced by a lot of the concepts Steve an Jamie created and represented them in my tenure on the book. So, to have Steve join colorist Lovern Kindzierski. letterer Jared K. Fletcher and I is a a dream come true for me.
Steve is an incredibly talented illustrator as well as an extremely professional and reliable guy and with everything we have planned on Animal Man coming up, I know the Baker Family is in good hands!
And on another note I'd like to wish outgoing artist Travel Foreman the best of luck on all his future pprojects. The success of Animal Man is due in no small part to Travel's artistic vision and I was lucky to have worked with him.
Art from Animal Man #7 by Steve Pugh!

FRANKENSTEIN Stars in final issue MEN OF WAR!

Friday, January 13th, 2012

By Pamela Mullin

At the helm of the final issue of MEN OF WAR are white hot writers Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Sweet Tooth) and Matt Kindt (Revolver) with art by Tom Derenick.

In this action packed issue, Frankenstein walks through a rain of bombs over 1941 London before being dragged to the depths of the Pacific Ocean and onto the shores of Japan. Will he make it there in one piece so he can team up with GI Robot to defeat the Axis weapon that threatens to turn the tide of the war? Frank's success will hinge on the help of a four-armed super-spy assassin working in the shadows.

(Cover by Victor Kalvachev)

We asked Jeff and Matt about working on this issue and here's what they had to say:

"I first met Matt Kindt at the MoCCA festival in New York in 2005. He was selling copies of Super Spy and I was selling my first graphic novel, Lost Dogs. We hit it off right away and since then Matt has become one of my closest friends.

Coincidentally, Bob Harras told me I was going to be writing the Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE series, for the New 52, at last year's Emerald City Con in Seattle. I was sharing a hotel room with Matt that weekend and we spent the rest of the show talking about ideas for the book. Before long it turned into a full-on brainstorming session with Matt and a lot of the ideas from that weekend went into the first 5 or 6 issues of Frank. So Matt has been a secret contributor to the series since it launched in September.

So, when Joey Cavalieri asked me to write this special "Frankenstein in World War II" issue of Men of War, I immediately asked if Matt could co-write it with me. It was an incredibly fun experience. We just kept trying to top each other in terms of the crazy Ideas we could squeeze into the book, and I think fans are going to have as much fun reading it as we had writing it!" – Jeff Lemire

"It was fitting that Jeff and I worked on Frankenstein's secret World War II history together. We both dug up the craziest ideas we could think of — literally I think we tried to top each other with some outrageous imagery and story ideas. We stitched it all together and then Tom applied the electricity (art) to bring this monster to life. Tom seriously drew what is my favorite double-page spread of all time in this issue. You'll know it when you see it. I have to say working with Jeff on this has easily been the most fun I've had doing comics so far…and I've had a lot of fun. And like all unholy unions I think the sum is even crazier than the parts!" – Matt Kindt

This 40-page event full of espionage and monster mayhem is not to be missed!

CBR picks ANIMAL MAN as the #2 Comic of 2011!

Comic Book Resources has announced their top 100 Comics of 2011 and I'm proud to say that Animal Man came in at #2!

2. Animal Man
Written by Jeff Lemire
Drawn by Travel Foreman
Published by DC Comics

"While not as splashy as some of the other big hits unleashed under the New 52 banner, Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman have given Buddy Baker an epic landscape to operate within -- and considering the character's meta-history, beyond. Destined to crash headfirst into 'Swamp Thing' in the months ahead, Lemire is taking the superhero/horror mash-up he fleshed out in "Superboy" to another level, and that's saying something when you consider 'Superboy' was nominated for an Eisner."

-- CBR Staff Writer Jeffrey Renaud

"Ever since Grant Morrison raised the character from a third- or fourth-tier hero into something unique, there has been a strong desire to see another strong, compelling 'Animal Man' series. This is it. Lemire's take isn't Morrisonian, but it builds the concept of a family-first superhero into something new, and takes Buddy Baker and his young daughter into some very, very dark territory."

-- CBR Staff Writer Shaun Manning

"The mix of lurching dread in Lemire's plot and gorgeously grotesque art by Foreman has surely given its fair share of readers sleepless nights. This is how you take a previously no-list character and bring him up to the big leagues."

-- CBR Contributor Brett White

FRANKENSTEIN and SWEET TOOTH also made it in the Top 100. Thanks to all the great folks at CBR!
