DENIED! No 3rd Discover It Card for Me

Discover It Is an Amazing Cashback Card (For the 1st Year at Least)!
Yes! Just Got My $1,100+ Discover It Cashback Match (The Dublin)!

Right after I got a 2nd Chase British Airways card, I trotted over to the Discover website hoping to pick up a 3rd Discover It card.

Last week, I had 2 Discover It cards. So I closed Discover It #1. With Discover It #2, I’m expecting a sweet $800+ cashback match next month:

discover it 3rd year

#ReadyForIt

Last year, I got back $1,100 in cashback match. So Discover has been generous to me, doubtlessly.

But, you can only have 2 Discover cards at once, so if I wanted #3, that meant #1 had to go.

I checked to make sure over a year had passed since I opened #2.

Good to go?

I waited until September 8th passed, and then a few extra days to be on the safe side. Then, with zeal in my little eye, I prepared my grubby mitts for a new Discover It – and a new year of that sweet cashback match.

PWND! No Discover It for you!

Palms clammy, I was assured of approval. I even picked the new rainbow design for the card I was so certain to get:

Wants

But then:

Crying

So I called the number and spoke to a representative. I pointed out that it had been over a year. Not by much, but past the year mark surely.

She kept saying “at this time” “at this time.” So I asked how long they’d like me to wait before I apply again. She said there’s no specific timeframe but I am welcome to apply “at a later date.”

I don’t know if that means next week, next month, or what.

What does this mean for Discover cards?

Last year, peeps weren’t sure if you could even get a second Discover It card with cashback match. And this year, there were similarly no data points if you could get a third card. But, I just tried, and was denied without much explanation. And the Discover rep couldn’t give me any specific information. Though she did invite me to apply again “at a later date,” which is vague.

So basically, nothing to take away from the experience other than… no means no. It should still be possible to get a 2nd card though, as long as a year has passed since you got the 1st one.

I will always love the Discover It card (for a year)

If you’re never had the Discover It card, OMG huddle forth. It has practical 5% cashback categories that rotate quarterly. Here are/were 2017’s bonus categories:

I used/will use them all this year

That’s nice and all, but the real magic lies in the cashback match – which I lovingly call The Dublin.

After the 12th billing cycle, Discover matches all the cashback you’ve earned and gives you a lump deposit on your 13th billing statement. That means all the cashback you earn from the 5% bonus categories effectively doubles to 10%.

I love Discover’s shopping portal

Even better, anything you earn from the fantastic Discover Deals shopping portal, any referrals you make, and the $50 sign-up bonus – are all doubled too.

That’s why I say this card is amazing – for the 1st year at least. In fact, this card is criminally underrated. Discover is a generous bank, the card is fantastic, and approvals are generally easy.

If you’re over Chase 5/24 and pecking around for a decent card to earn some rewards with, I heartily recommend this card. After all, I wanted 3 of ’em!

If you sign up with my link, you’ll get $50 in cash back after your 1st purchase made within 3 months of account opening. And of course that’s doubled after your 12th billing cycle, in addition to everything else you earn.

Bottom line

Thought I’d share in case others are in a similar situation. While I’m sad to lose another year of The Dublin, I did enjoy the $2,200 I got in Year 1 and the $1,700 I got/will get this year (Year 2). But alas, it looks like Year 3 is out of reach… for now.

I’m oddly fine about it because soon enough, I’ll have $20,000 in spend to complete on the Chase British Airways card. So that’ll keep me busy for a while. Maybe by the time that’s done, Discover will let me squeak by for that 3rd year.

If you’ve never had the Discover It card, it’s one I highly recommend for the:

Usually excellent quarterly bonus categories
Access to Discover Deals shopping portal
Fairly reliable $10 per month Kohl’s coupon
Ability to stack portal payouts with bonus categories to earn even more
Bonus category backup in case you max it out with Chase Freedom (like I did this quarter with restaurants)
Fact that it’s not a Chase, Citi, or Amex card

Another part of me is like… whoa, the good deals are getting more scarce. I can’t say I’m surprised by Discover’s decision, but it does sting a little. Especially because I do carry the card with me so frequently. Ah, well. Smile because it happened, right?

I’ll have to revisit this card after my second Dublin next month…

Link: Get a Discover It card

Get 6X British Airways Avios Points Everywhere on $20K in Spend – Why I Caved

You might’ve heard a version of the infamous British Airways 100,000 points deal is back.

It’s a beast of a deal – there’s no doubt about that. And I mean that in a good way AND a bad way.

chase british airways 100,000

Maybe I’ll use my British Airways Avios to visit these ragtag streets in Barcelona again

There are many cons to accept with this deal: the minimum spending, the materiality of the points themselves, and a gigantic black hole of opportunity cost. But let’s call a spade a spade here: at this point I’m taking what I can get.

I hated this card. Now I’m crawling back on hands and knees. My, how the winds have shifted

And 100,000 of any kind of points is nothing to sniff at. So I got the Chase British Airways card again – even after I brutally dumped it a little over 2 years ago.

A hard look at this 100K offer, OK

Link: Apply for Card Offers

There’s zero doubt in my mind this offer isn’t for most people. But it’s definitely for me. The more I thought about it, I realized that.

Peeps say British Airways Avios points are difficult to use because award availability on American Airlines (their partner) is scarce – at best. And their best European partner, Air Berlin, recently, uh, went under.

Award flights on British Airways themselves are laden with $1,000+ fuel surcharges.

Not to mention the terms of the deal.  You earn:

50,000 British Airways Avios points after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening
An additional 25,000 British Airways Avios points after you spend $10,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening
A further 25,000 British Airways Avios points after you spend $20,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening for a total of 100,000 bonus Avios

$20,000 in spend to unlock the full deal! That’s a LOT of spending. But when you break it down, that’s $1,666 per month if you stretch it out over a year – which is a LOT more palatable.

The rent on one of my Airbnbs is $1,535 + parking and utilities so even if I just stuck that on the card, I’d unlock the full bonus.

What reeled me in: 6X everywhere!

It’s not hard math to see you’ll earn 5X points on everything you purchase. Spend $20,000, get 100,000 points. I know there are 5X bonus categories out there – and I’ll still make the most of those – but to earn 5X on rent payments through Plastiq (even with the 2.5% fee considered) is still a lot of points per $1 spent. More than I’m used to these daze.

But it’s really 6X everywhere.

Because you’ll earn 1 point per $1 spent, too. If you spend exactly $20,000, you’ll get the 100,000 point sign up bonus + 20,000 points for the minimum spending.  That’s 6X (120,000 points / $20,000)! Not a bad deal at all.

I’ll still likely use my Chase Sapphire Reserve for dining, my Citi Prestige for airfare, and my Chase Freedom for its own 5X quarterly categories. But yeah, I can stick a rent payment on the Chase British Airways card without missing out of any of that.

Previously, I determined it’s worth it to use the Amex Blue Business Plus for Plastiq rent payments even at 2X points per $1. But to get 6X on those payments is obviously even better.

Boom

The thought of 6X everywhere on up to $20,000 in spend… I couldn’t hold back any longer.

NOT a 5/24 card

I have 30 credit cards to my name right now. So I’m not falling below 5/24 any time soon. Fortunately, this is one of the few Chase cards NOT impacted by their 5/24 rule – so it’s still open to every commoner in the land, including knaves like me (I’m a knave!).

Honestly – there are not many cards I can get any more. I can’t get most Amex cards because I’ve had them all before. I can’t get Citi cards because of their “family of brands” rule. There aren’t many Barclaycards I care about – and the ones I do, I have. I have my Discover It. And 2 US Bank cards (including the US Bank Altitude Reserve).

What’s left if you’re an “old-timer” to this hobby?

I don’t have the luxury of picking through offers. I have to take what comes my way. Even if this offer isn’t exactly tops on my list, it’s a good deal and a great number of points. And despite not fully knowing how I’ll use them, I know myself – and I know I’ll put them to good use.

Plus, what else am I earning now? The best spending you can do is for sign-up bonuses. And this is one of the more appealing ones out there right now.

Opportunity cost

I should address this. Back in the day, I could unlock 4 or 5 (or more!) credit card sign-up bonuses with $20,000 in spending. Those days are over for me.

If you’re still new, you should definitely NOT get this card. You’ll miss you on too much. But me, I’m not missing out on anything because there’s nothing to miss. This deal is all I have open to me right now – but you should think about what other cards, bonuses, and category spend you’d miss by putting so much spending on one card.

Are the points really that hard to use?

The other extremely valid critique is: OK, so I get 100,000 of these British Airways Avios points. How do I use them?

There’s no sugar-coating this: they are more difficult to redeem than your run-of-the-mill points.

They’re best if you’re persistent, and flexible with your dates. If you aren’t both of those things, you’ll have a devil of a time getting anything good from them. Period.

That said, I’m still finding niche routes where these points can save a heap.

I am DYING to go back to Toronto

There’s a Dallas to Toronto flight which OF COURSE American Airlines guards like Fort Knox when it comes to award space. These flights are routinely $550 round-trip in coach. Which like:

Some Plastiq Mortgage Payments With Visa Cards Working Again!

Update: Some readers let me know not all mortgage payments are working, but many are!

Here’s an example from my account:

A mortgage payment you can still pay with Plastiq

As long as the “Submit Payment” button isn’t grayed out, you should be good to go! Let me know if it works for you!

More data points slash adventures with Plastiq.

So I just got a new Bank of America Alaska Airlines card – I get a new one every 45 days for a quick injection of 30,000 Alaska miles. Those are, of course, Visa cards, which Plastiq said would no longer work.

Well today, I paid the rent for one of my Airbnbs with this card on Plastiq.

plastiq visa payments

This Plastiq payment is clearly marked as rent

And it went through without a hitch:

Boom

Considering the minimum spending on this card is only $1,000, I was able to knock most of it out with a single rent payment. Then I sent $50 to my utility company to trigger the sign-up bonus. Minimum spending done in under a minute. AWESOME!

This isn’t a fluke. My friend Angie used her Chase Fairmont card to pay her mortgage via Plastiq recently, too – that’s also a Visa card. And I’ve heard others have had success, too.

Plastiq Visa payments

While I think 3X with the Chase Sapphire Reserve is long gone, using Plastiq to meet minimum spending on Visa cards is extremely easy. Even with the 2.5% fee considered, having it done in seconds sure beats having to monitor it for a few months. Especially if you need to spend a few thousand.

I also just confirmed 3X still works with the Citi AT&T Access More card. And wrote about why you’d even consider using the new Blue Business Plus Amex for Plastiq payments, too.

But given that I can still get 3X, the gravy train is still on – at least for now.

And moreover, it seems you can use your Visa cards again. So if you have a Visa and want to make some Plastiq payments for rent, mortgage, or HOA, they should go through just fine.

It Lives! 3X ThankYou Points on Plastiq Payments With Citi AT&T Access More Card

Also see:

A Ray of Hope for Plastiq 3X With Citi AT&T Access More Card?

I suspected this might be the case!

My statement closed last night and I just got the PDF. I can confirm all my rent payments made through Plastiq on my last Citi AT&T Access More statement earned 3X Citi ThankYou points. Even the ones made after July 22nd.

citi plastiq 3X

3X is alive and well

The only things that didn’t earn 3X coded as utility payments… which Citi has always said will earn 1X anyway.

The other payments are coding as “Misc Government Services.”

My test payment from August 1st earned 3X and coded this way

I’m not sure what this means, but it looks like 3X is alive and well!

Citi Plastiq 3X is still around

Link: Sign up for Plastiq

Reader Amar confirmed on August 8th that his mortgage payment earned 3X as well.

Further, I made a rent, mortgage, and HOA payment – all earned 3X.

Interestingly, a student loan payment I made on my new Citi Diamond Preferred also coded as “Misc Government Services.”

Effin’ Mohela, man

I made the payment this way to avoid paying interest until 2019. But that it coded the same way leads me to believe some student loan payments will earn 3X as well. Previously, these payments coded as “Education” (which makes sense).

Somewhere along the line, the coding changed. And while I’d say to keep an eye on it, it seems 3X is good to go – for now at least.

Just wanted to share the newest data point. Let me know if it works for you, too!
