What's New!

Yep, that' title is a statement and not a question. I wanted to drop in and let everyone know what's new, and what's coming up from my fertile writer's brain and terribly messy desk (a sure sign of genius!).

I'm working on a small rewrite for a second edition of Exposed: The Education of Sarah Brown . It's just a small segment, to bring it in line with the rest of the series, but I aim to complete it before my upcoming book sale/signing at the New Braunfels, Texas Weihnachtsmarkt in November (the 17th) where I will be greeting happy holiday shoppers with a big, Texas-sized smile! Make plans to come out and see me. I'll be there from 10:00 a.m. 'til 1:00 p.m. After that, I'll be shopping the other vendor stalls and happily munching on roasted cinnamon pecans.

So what is NEW? Well, I have exciting news. I have been invited to participate in the highly successful Special Forces: Operation Alpha Kindle World by NY Times Bestselling Author Susan Stoker! If you're a fan, this will surely 'stoke' you! I know I am. My standalone will launch next November, 2018 so stay tuned for the teasers and announcement of publication.

Set for March, 2018, I'll be publishing in another Kindle World, Supernatural Skylines. This global network of supernatural tales is going to be amazing! My world is San Antonio, and my main character is the Saint, aka, Antonio. Antonio Diaz is a Nephilim. This story will intersect with Gabriel, the archangel from my Angelic Hosts Series. Gabriel's rebelliousness is matched by Antonio who questions the accepted wisdom of following orders from higher up. Antonio is conflicted in his faith. In this first book, he comes to the realization of who he is, and meets fellow Nephilim. Antonio is an ex-Marine who is struggling to reintegrate into society following two tours in Afghanistan. His father passes away while he is overseas. The death in the family cuts his second tour short. When he comes home to take care of his father's funeral arrangements, he finds a letter, one that changes everything. With his whole world turned upside down, and never knowing who his mother really was, Antonio is confused, angry, and determined to discover the truth. He meets a mysterious man who leads him to Blanca, a young woman with a chip on her shoulder, and starch in spine. She is tough, sarcastic, and yet....vulnerable.
And finally, the long-awaited launch of A Cell in San Antonio, a John Rain (by Barry Eisler) Kindle World novella, will arrive in time for Christmas. I'm thrilled at how this one has turned out as I'm a huge fan of this series by Eisler. If you haven't read his books yet, go pick up A Clean Kill in Tokyo . It's the first book in the canon. Assassin stories get me pumped!
In between it all, I'll working on the first book in my new Sci-Fi series spinoff, Section 5. Agent Roger Otis teams up with MI6's Nial Allchurch in a four-book series that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck! The truth is, indeed, out there, but far more frightening, it's already here!
Sounds like a lot, but I thrive under pressure. Bring it, baby!
Also, look for an announcement this holiday season for a new Paper Gold Publishing box set of inspirational tales to include my new, exclusive short, Accidentally, On Purpose ; a light-hearted romantic comedy that will put a smile on your face. When the town klutz begins a temporary job caring for an injured hockey player, hilarity ensues and love blooms.
That's it for now. Hope everyone has had a fab summer. Are you ready for fall? I am! It's my favorite time of year!

When the walls come tumbling down…
Herman Faust is the no-nonsense Direktor of the LKA (The LandesKriminalamt, similar to the American CIA) and long-time friend of Kommissar Joseph Heinz. His career spans thirty years, and he is now on the cusp of retirement. Although usually cool and in control, a man of dry wit, it wasn't always so for Faust. With experience, came wisdom, hard won wisdom for which he paid a high price.
1988:  For rookie officer Herman Faust, a routine, late night traffic stop turns into the apprehension of a high priority defector, one with ties to the Soviet bio-weapons program Obolensk. After bringing the woman and her brother in for questioning, the man disappears, and the woman is found inside her holding cell…dead. The American CIA intervenes, confiscating the woman’s corpse and demanding answers even as more bodies pile up around them. Faust has none to offer, but begins receiving anonymous calls threatening his family, and his own life. As clues come to light linking his superior, Captain Rolf Rheinhardt, to the woman, and to a Soviet plot to launch a biological weapon on the American Embassy, Faust knows he must risk all to stop the deadly pathogen from being released on innocent civilians. The stability of West Berlin is at risk, and if Faust fails to solve the case, it will be war! This is his story. This is the making of Herman Faust.

Checkpoint Author Visits The Faust Hotel

There's quite a lot of history to be found in the small towns outside of San Antonio. One of these gems happens to be The Faust Hotel & Brewing Company located just 15 minutes from my house, right up I35 North, in the town of New Braunfels, Texas.

Mondays are usually so dull, but my friend Carmen was off work, and we decided to head on over to The Faust for dinner. I found it online when checking for good places to scarf down some German food, and when I saw the name of it, I knew we had to go there. As many of you know, one of my engaging Checkpoint series characters shares the same last name, Herman Faust, the dry-witted Direktor of the Landeskriminalamt (LKA). I felt it was a sign, one that screamed "Come here!"

Off we gals went, enjoying great conversation on the way. The Faust sits on S. Seguin Ave. near the historic downtown region of New Braunfels. Out front of this four-story hotel is a bubbling fountain that is part of the front-facing wall. The night desk man, Ed, told me that it's also the local watering hole for deer who come by for a cool drink and a peek through the original leaded-glass windows. He also told me that the other night desk person, who works the rest of the nights each week, is a favorite of local feral cats. Yep, he feeds them. Sometimes, they'll come through the front door at night when they leave it open to catch the breeze, always looking for their buddy with the food.

This hotel was built in 1929, opening October 12th of that year, just two weeks before the market crashed heralding in the era of the Great Depression. Back then, it was known as the Travelers Hotel. Somehow, it survived the crash, a bol weevil infestation that damn-near destroyed the thriving textile industry of the time, and even WWII. By 1936, the hotel name was changed in honor of it's builder, Walter Faust, and it has been The Faust ever since.

There are stories of soldiers using this grand old dame as the place where they made their wedded pledges of faith and committed themselves to their brides (in a honeymoon suite) before going off to war. I imagine many a bride may have conceived their first child there, and many more waited for their new husbands to return, some possibly waiting forever, never again reuniting.

To the rear of the hotel is the restaurant, known as The Faust Brewing Company, a popular spot today for those looking for tall beer, some Brats, kartoffel chips, and even German nachos! They also serve regular pub food, but you can find a beer-cheese soup on the menu alongside a sampler plate of mini-dogs (which I ordered...a Chicago Style, a German Style, and a Texas Style mini hot dog for the undecided palate). Good stuff!

Me & my friend, Carmen at The FaustI have to say, when you walk through the lobby, you feel like you've gone back in time. The architectural details are all original from the floors to the piano sitting in the corner of the guest seating area to the old Victrola. They also still have the original phone booth with wood bench seat and a door that folds closed for privacy. The atmosphere is aged, but with elegance. There's a sort-of mustiness to the air that speaks to the age of the building when up on the floors, and of course, no old hotel is without its ghost stories. Ed the night desk guy said he was definitely no believer in ghosts, but one night, he was putting away the mail near an old laundry chute in the office when suddenly, the chute door swung open, hitting him. He was alone, and it surprised him. He says he rationalized that it had to have been a breeze...inside a closed office....from a chute that is not in use. Okay, Ed. (A very nice gentleman, he is.)

Guests have shared they hear knocks and footsteps, and certain rooms such as 214 and 215 along with the entire fourth floor have a claim to unexplained activity. Ghost hunters enjoy checking in to do a little ghost hunting from time to time, but in all, I found it fascinating. I think I might go sit in the lobby one afternoon and see what stories spring to mind. Nothing is more inspirational than an old building that has watched eras go by, all the while silently observing the lives of the millions of visitors that have graced its rooms and dined in its restaurant. The Faust lives on, an inanimate monument of wood and stone imbued with the energy of time, still welcoming the curious, the hungry, and those who seek a place to lay their heads for the night...
