Temperatures have topped 100 degrees lately. We're definitely in the dog days of summer, and I'm melting!

For those who don't know, fall is my favorite season, and I'm definitely dreaming of cooler temperatures, wet weather, colorful and crunchy leaves falling off trees, and all things fall like the scents of damp earth, rain, pumpkin, cinnamon, and spice!

I still have at least a month and a half to go in Texas before I can look outside and wake up to chilly breezes, but until then, I can picture it while writing my novels....until then, I can dream.

Don't forget you can STILL download a FREE copy of Camael's Battle from Instafreebie, and you can also grab book II in the Kriminal Erotic Series for only $0.99 (until August 7th). Details here: GET YOURS!

The (Ghost) Stories We Tell

GUEST BLOG: New York Times published essayist, Cold War Queen, and Historical Fiction Author Victoria Dougherty  (The Bone Church) Featured on Cover 2 Cover with Jami and Michele; Blogtalk Radio Thursdays at 7 p.m. EST.

The (Ghost) Stories We Tell

When Michele Gwynn and Jami Brumfield asked me to come on their Blog Talk Radio program, Cover to Cover, I figured I was in for an interesting time. Case in point, Michele writes about murders, angels, aliens, ghosts and a German dominatrix who changes careers and becomes an officer in the State Police. Jami is a passionate paranormalist (Is that even a word? Don’t know, but it fits) and hypnotherapist, no less, who writes fun and suspenseful novels about witches, vampires, ghosts, werewolves and forbidden love.
Pull me up a chair.
Not surprisingly, our conversation got a little bit woo-woo when Michele asked me about the paranormal elements in my own work.
It’s funny, I don’t consider myself a paranormal writer at all, and I think if you go strictly by genre rules, I’m not. I’m a Historical Fiction kind of girl, who weaves some pretty significant Thriller aspects into my stories. But more often than not, a certain degree of magical realism does define the way I spin a yarn. My characters can have visions – religious or otherwise, divine love (albeit wrongly) from some pretty sadistic acts, and see the occasional ghost. One of my characters even becomes the Angel of Death after his own untimely demise.
I suppose that is a bit unusual for Historical Fiction.
But not unusual in history. History is filled with leaders who feel they were communing with God or being whispered to by spirits. Just ask Joan of Arc, the Egyptians, or any number of Native American tribesmen or women – especially ones from days past. Nor is a paranormal element unusual in historical writing. Homer comes to mind. Macbeth.
In my own life, I’ve always felt a co-existence with the “other.” From niggling feelings that end up being prophetic to simply answered prayers. Like any self-respecting history buff, I live in a house that was built while Thomas Jefferson was still among the living, for heaven’s sake. Our living room has been a bar, a theater, a train station. Countless people have lived, died, made love and given birth in our home. Our cellar was even used as an interim morgue for fallen Civil War soldiers. So, I know a thing or two about living with the dead.
And I can’t imagine telling a story that doesn’t acknowledge at least the potential for belief in the existence of other worlds, of souls, of an overlap in space and time that even Einstein allowed for.
Because really, does any one of us know a single someone out there who doesn’t have a ghost story to tell?

Captain of my ship and CEO of ME!

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=series_rw_dp_labf?_encoding=UTF8&field-collection=Kriminal+Erotic+Series&url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text Click image to purchase books I and/or II in the Kriminal Erotic Series on Amazon. There have been a few changes in my world lately. Namely, I am now the sole captain of my ship, the CEO of me. My previous publisher changed hands to new ownership; a lovely lady and gent whom I admire greatly, and to whom I wish all the best. However, the change of ownership gave me the opportunity to re-evaluate my experience as an author -- Independent versus Represented.

Some authors find their groove in the hands of a publisher, but for me, I simply felt out of control, out of the loop, and realized that taking back that control was important to me. So we have parted ways, each going off on our new adventures. I made some good friends with other Beau Coup authors, learned much, and did enjoy the feeling of family offered under their umbrella. For that, I'm eternally grateful, and I will continue to share with all of you the new releases from these very talented authors. They deserve it. You, the readers, deserve it. Because we all love a good book, right?

So here's the scoop. My Kriminal Erotic Series which includes Exposed: The Education of Sarah Brown and The Evolution of Elsa Kreiss and now back in my home stable and available on Amazon -- re-edited and with striking new covers. The paperbacks will follow shortly.

Book III, The Redemption of Joseph Heinz is being written, and I expect it completed and published this fall so keep an eye peeled here for that announcement.

The first book in the Ghosts of Cardiff Series, Murder in the Vale: The Beginning, was an anthology short, an introduction. It was a mere 10K words so my plan is to complete the entire novel and republish it all in its entirety in spring 2016 as a full novel under its new title, Murder in the Vale: The Mystery at Llandaff Cathedral.

In between, there will be book III of the Harvest Trilogy; Census (the series veers off into dark waters as the UFO theme continues and combines with a serial killer), my first dark, old-school vampire novel; The Heart of Darkness, and the third book in the Angelic Hosts Series as yet untitled, but will cover the archangel, Cassiel, who was introduced in books I and II, Camael's Gift and Camael's Battle.

Please help spread the word, and as always, thank you so much for your support. If you haven't done so already, sign up for my monthly newsletter (at right) where subscribers receive exclusive news and giveaways each month.

How a writer stays balanced

Today was a good day. You may wonder if writers ever crawl out of there caves to stand in the sun, ...well, we do. I did. Today, I drove to the lovely town of Fredericksburg, Texas. It's an old German town about an hour and a half northwest of San Antonio. It's a pretty drive up into and through the scenic Texas Hill Country.

It was a day with family, a day for lunch in a small cafe that serves both German Bratwurst and burgers. It was hot outside, but not too hot, and thankfully, not humid. There was shopping, (fudge from a little shop that makes everything fresh and local), sightseeing, a little visit out to Wildseed Farm (the largest working wildflower farm around), and of course, the purchase of fresh Hill Country peaches from a local orchard. All in all, a good time had by all.

It's always good to take a mental health day no matter what your occupation, but for a writer, every outing is a new character, location, or plot for the next book. There's a black cat named Spooky that lives on the property of Wildseed Farm (one of many) who slinks through the rows of potted flowers and along the manicured pathways through the butterfly garden that is definitely hiding a secret.

There's also an old cemetery behind a sleepy residential area (Der Stadt Friedhof) that was established in 1846. At night, the spirit of a young woman mistakenly tossed into one of the mass graves for Cholera patients, walks the length and breadth of the burial site unable to find her way home. Suffering a high fever from the flu, her condition was misdiagnosed, and when she passed out from dehydration, an incompetent doctor declared her dead. Her unconscious body was added to the pile where she suffocated beneath the soil and tightly packed corpses of the dead. Unidentified because of the confusion caused by the epidemic, she was never heard from again...except at night when the eerie sobbing of a woman raises the fine hairs on the necks of residents up to five blocks away striking fear in their hearts, and making them check that each window is closed, and every door is locked.

And finally, an old gentleman sitting on one of the many benches situated on the boulevard outside the quaint shops has a story. Together, they visited the small parlor only a few blocks down from the park where the Christmas market is held each December. His wife loved ice cream. She especially loved ice cream in the winter; fudge ripple on a waffle cone. They met in that ice cream parlor fifty-seven years ago, and now, in her memory, he makes the long walk down that boulevard, leaning on his cane, to have a fudge ripple waffle cone. He needs to stop and rest a bit between his car and the ice cream parlor, and from the ice cream parlor back to his car again, but he makes the journey once a week without fail. For her. And he hopes to see her again some day. Hopes that one day soon, they will be reunited where they can once again sit across from each other in that tiny shop decorated with memorabilia from days gone by. Just him and his sweetheart, and two fudge ripple waffle cones.

Yeah, I'm weird that way. This is what I come home with along with a box of peaches, some delicious fudge, and a t-shirt to commemorate the outing.

What's new and how can you get in on these giveaways?

Get in on these monthly Giveaways by Subscribing to my newsletter on the right!
Making a Splash in July!Endings and New BeginningsFirst, a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to June's winners, Terri H.C., Terri S., and Christina R. (Your book goodies were mailed out on July 6th).

July marks the ending to my relationships with my publisher, Beau Coup LLC. As they make the transition to new ownership, I am also transitioning back to Indie authorship. They are a wonderful group of people and I will continue to support BC authors as I begin to navigate the big blue ocean of publishing. Thankfully, I have fantastic author friends such as my writing bestie, author Jami Brumfield, and the wonderful Crazy Lady Authors; a group of Indie authors who support each other through promotion, tweeting, sharing, shameless compliments, reviews and more.

With this news comes a complete inventory liquidation. This means I am giving away TEN SETS OF THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THE KRIMINAL EROTIC SERIES. You read that right! I have ten, count 'em, TEN sets of these two books, paperbacks, ink on paper, that addictive feeling of an actual book in your hands.....for TEN lucky winners. All you have do is.....REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH "YES! I WANT A SET!" and I will let random dot org choose TEN Lucky Winners! This is a $21 value gift which will most likely have some added swag because...that's how I roll! Just ask past winners.

I'm also revealing here the new covers for both books once I republish out this month independently. (Yep, the covers were the product of the publisher and since I am no longer under the Beau Coup fleur de lis, that means new covers....which are AWESOME! There is also some re-editing for the second edition. This means your set, should you be one of the ten winners, is a limited edition, no longer in print set of books. Cool, yeah?

In other news, I am working on book III in the Kriminal Erotic Series, The Redemption of Joseph Heinz, book III in the Harvest Trilogy; Census, and my very first vampire novel, The Heart of Darkness. I'm going old-school traditional, ladies and gents, back to Romania...back to folklore, gypsy curses, and deep, dark unrequited and forbidden love. I do love the more traditional vampires and I haven't seen many of those lately. I think they're enjoying the fact that they can go about their business unnoticed because most people are looking for daywalkers, sparkly vampires, and those that own clubs in Louisiana. They're fun too, but it's time to get back to basics. Look for these three books in Fall, 2015.

As always, thank you so much for all your support, participating in these monthly giveaways, reading my books, and sharing with your book-loving friends. I hope my July winners will take some time to review both books on Amazon. Reviews help other readers when browsing for books so help me continue to grow as a writer and reach a wider audience. You guys rock!

Interesting fact about the cover for Exposed: The background image is a light reversal on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, an image I shot while on vacation there in 2010.

The Story:  Exposed actually began as a simple erotica. But as it's true in real life, it's also true in books; all sex and no story is just boring! Then I went to Berlin, had a wonderful time, saw beautiful places, and ate some great food (and had a beer or two). When I came back, a seed had already been planted that grew into the story that turned Sarah's personal sexual exploration into a real adventure, and an education beyond what she expected, one that exposed the darker side of human nature while shining a light of the best in humanity. As the tale grew, I knew I had to tone down other areas to blend the two, and voila, Exposed was born. It set me on track for the second book which is even better than the first. Now I'm hip-deep into the third story and enjoying every minute of it. I hope you will, too.

So what do you think of the new covers? Copyright © 2015 Author Michele E. Gwynn, All rights reserved.

She is fond of setting her stories~which range from the sweet to the paranormal to the erotic~on location in South Carolina and Texas, but its anybody’s guess as to what the genre will be! Enjoying San Francisco as a backdrop, the ghosts in Diane Rinella‘s 150-year old Victorian home augment the chorus in her head. With insomnia as their catalyst, these voices have become multifarious characters that haunt her well into the sun’s crowning hours, refusing to let go until they have manipulated her into succumbing to their whims. Her experiences as an actress, business owner, artisan cake designer, software project manager, Internet radio disc jockey, vintage rock n’ roll journalist/fan girl, and lover of dark and quirky personalities influence her idiosyncratic writing. Holly Barbo‘s world is shaped by her love of family, the beauty of the natural world and an irrepressible creative drive. She has always been curious and sees life through questions. These four characteristics color her writing voice and her stories frequently evolve from her asking “What if….?” Her tales tend to have non-urban settings with nature contributing to the plot, building discordant themes inside a seemingly peaceful refrain. Holly weaves alternative worlds with threads from today. Spending time with family and friends, watching a baseball game and enjoying a good bottle of wine are usually on her to-do lists. Jennifer is also ‘MiMi’ to three beautiful grandchildren and a mom to three grown children, all of whom she adores. Theriot is an admitted music junkie, loving every type of music, which takes up most of the memory on her iPhone. She listens to music from sun up to sun down and her love of music is reflected a great deal in her books. I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and I live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband’s chief mechanic’s helper and roadie. I have cut firewood on shares. I worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway. My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word. We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm.Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much, I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. My love and I were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.
