Writer Wednesday Blog; Sexy Gigolo Shoot: Copy that!

Actually, I spent my day working on a promo and then running to the post office before it was too late to mail out some autographed books to a happy reader. (Thank you, happy reader!)

Before I wrote books full time, I worked briefly as the senior editor to a start-up online fashion magazine, Fashionerotica. It was cutting edge combining all the elements of fashion, photography, and tasteful erotica with...what else, great copy! That was my area, to provide the copy; all the stories behind the various photo shoots as well as articles of interest and celebrity interviews. It was my first foray into the fashion world, and for this Texas gal, it was quite the experience.

Behind the scenes: Nick & MarinaGoing into this job, I'd already been conducting multiple interviews with people; authors, activists, models, TV hosts, sports figures and the like. One popular cable TV star graciously granted me an interview which led to the one unusual twist of vocation for me from copywriter to fashion photo shoot manager. That actor was reality star Nick Hawk from Showtime's Gigolos, and the photo shoot took place in Henderson, Nevada at the Sky Combat Ace Hangar. There was quite a bit of coordination to putting this all together and I admit I felt like a fish out of water. Thankfully, because all the people involved were amazing, professional, and talented, the photo shoot turned out to be magnificent. I was sweating bullets throughout the entire time (because I was not present on site, but rather, sitting at home checking my text messages from the fashion designer, Skip Pas of West Coast Leather, who was my eyes and ears. God, I love Skip. He's awesome


Around 1:00 a.m., my phone rang. It was Nick. He called to let me know that the shoot was "the Bomb!". I could breathe again. My first time out of the gate arranging such a thing (I did have a safety net in the form of T-Boss Pierson, the magazine's co-owner and the manager in charge of all photo shoots), but like a good teacher, he stood back and let me pedal until I had the bike under control. I think he was just admiring my butt, but that's another story! I learned a great deal from my tenure with Fashionerotica. I'm forever grateful to T and Mar-C, Nick, Skip, and every single photographer, model, fashion designer, and business owner who worked with me.

The shoot turned out perfectly. Nick Hawk modeled West Coast Leather with models Nikki O., Marina, and Kina T. Photography by Radiant Inc. (Las Vegas, check them out!), and the location generously offered by the incredible people at Sky Combat Ace in Henderson. Sadly, the magazine didn't quite make it. After a time, that run came to an end, but it's my hope that it tries again because there was no other magazine out there like it. It was beautiful.

Now, of course, it's full steam ahead with fictional steam of the criminal, mystical, and paranormal variety along with a little horror/sci-fi on the side. Stay tuned for book three in The Checkpoint, Berlin Detective Series set in Berlin, Germany, The Redemption of Joseph Heinz. (There's a character in the series inspired by Nick. He's introduced in book two, The Evolution of Elsa Kreiss. If you can figure out which one, drop the character's name below in comments.)

Writer Wednesday Blog; Milestones and The Admiral

As a freelance journalist, I took on all kinds of newspaper and community magazine assignments. Sometimes, they were pretty normal; 5K runs, new business openings, city meetings, etc., but sometimes, they were AWESOME! I met former Spurs Center and all-around cool guy, David Robinson, better known as....The Admiral. Mr. Robinson is very actively involved in education for kids with the initial opening of The Carver Academy which later merged with IDEAL Charter Schools to better serve the growing number of children applying each year to attend. He is a joyous personality - very kind, incredibly intelligent, and just fun to talk with. When I look back at some of the things I've done, I kind of can't believe it. I am the person who keeps mostly to myself, hanging out with family and my cats while cooking up a juicy plot for my next book. No glamour going on here, just a lot of writing. But each small accomplishment sitting in a row, side by side, shows my journey.  You know, when my stepdad was alive, he was not the kind of man to express his feelings. Usually the opposite, actually, but when I began writing for newspapers and magazines, he quietly collected those articles, and would show his friends. I know both my father (had he lived long enough to see it happen), and my stepdad would be proud of my work. My stepdad did get to see my first two books before cancer took him so that's something. Mom's still here, and she has been with me a time or two when I've interviewed people. Something to chuckle over...she was in my house one afternoon when Nick Hawk from Showtime's Gigolos called me to follow up on a project we were working on for a fashion magazine (more on that one next week). She sat quietly while he told me he was launching his own sex toy line......my seventy-something year-old mom, yep! High five for stifling that giggle mom. But back to the amazing Mr. Robinson. The Other Side of the Veil and my Ghost Hunting Tales

Not a lot of people know this, but I'm a bit of an amateur ghost hunter. I am very interested in 'things that go bump in the night.' Not sure where it all began, but I find the notion of discovering what's on the other side of the veil fascinating. For me, it boils down to science....that we do not yet understand. What we do know is this, energy never dies, it merely changes form.

We are energy. That much has been proven. There are literally millions upon millions of electrical currents running through our bodies at all times. Synapses are firing, messages are being carried telling our muscles to move, our hearts to pump, our ears to hear, eyes to see, and brains to translate the massive load of information being brought to us every millisecond. We are walking miracles of science....that we as of yet do not fully understand.

We are more than just organic machines, however. Something beyond our physical bodies sparks us to life. We commonly refer to this spark as the soul. This is the source of our consciousness, our Chi or energy. This energy brings the body to life. It's what animates us, and when it's time for that energy to leave because the body is broken or in the process of breaking down beyond repair, that energy is freed. So where, exactly, does it go, and what form does it take? That's where a writer's imagination kicks in, and in my case, leads to some fun 'research' in the form of a little ghost hunting.


I've caught quite a few orbs when out shooting pics in graveyards in the middle of the night. The following pictures were taken not too far from my home. It's important to note that on the two separate nights out, there was no measurable moisture in the air. Both were cool, dry nights. Therefore, I can't dismiss the various orbs caught on camera as simply moisture, especially in view of the different shapes and colors, and the definitions of the outer edges.

Also included is a little audio I caught while standing in front of this grave of a little girl in an old German cemetery. I didn't hear the two different voices while standing there, but I sure did when I later played the audio back. Mine was the only living voice (and the loudest) Note to self: never EVER check EVPs at 3 a.m...alone!  You will have to turn up the sound on your device to hear the two voices. One responds back to me with "Hello", and the other is speaking over me saying something that sounds like "overlooking me" or "looks right through me." It goes fast. Only 11 seconds, but you'll hear them.


The image with a mother-load of orbs was interesting. I had clicked a picture right before that one and there was nothing. Then, I invited whoever was there to come stand before me for a picture. I did this to kind of freak out my friend, Kip, who is a complete non-believer of ghosts. He was not happy with the result....nor was he happy when I showed him the other pic below of a very large glowing orb following him at the edge of the cemetery.



 I can see that it's now that time of year when I need to go visit a new haunt, catch a few more ghosts for posterity. Who's with me?
