Stephan Eirik Clark is the author of the novel Sweetness #9 (Little, Brown) and the short story collection Vladimir's Mustache (Russian Life Books), a finalist for the 2013 Minnesota Book Award. He teaches at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

When I was asked to contribute to the Atlantic’s By Heart series, for which an author describes a cherished work or influence, I rushed over to the website to see who’d already been covered — and was surprised to discover Don DeLillo had not. That made it pretty easy to decide what I’d write about. The first paragraph of my tribute to DeLillo — and especially his novel White Noise — is below:

“When he was dry, he believed it was alcohol he needed, but when he had a few drinks in him, he knew it was something else, possibly a woman; and when he had it all -- cash, booze, and a wife -- he couldn't be distracted from the great emptiness that was always falling through him and never hit the ground.”

“The questions that undermine our faith don’t arrive through deep meditation and diligent study. They pop up like soldiers from a fox-hole, ready to shoot you down before you even have the time to realize you’re dead.”
Stephan Eirik Clark, Sweetness #9

“Communism will kill you quicker than a maraschino cherry ever will.”
Stephan Eirik Clark, Sweetness #9

“Look into the future with me. People will tire of colas. Their color is dark, ominous. They bring to mind shadows and doubt, things untrustworthy, the hidden rivers of the mind.* In this more optimistic decade, under the leadership of The Great Communicator, Americans will demand a beverage that is clear, something that steers us away from the turbulent sixties and all the turbid years that followed. Seltzer water. It is a beacon of purity. Observing its clear, colorless liquid and believing it will work on the soul, consumers will drink three, maybe four units a day. This is no false Cassandra’s cry. Raspberry. Root beer. Vanilla. Black Cherry. Shoppers will leave the supermarket with multiple six-packs and go home to tell their friends and families what they have found.”
Stephan Eirik Clark, Sweetness #9
