Kelseyleigh Reber is the author of If I Fall and If I Resist, the first two installments in the Circle & Cross Trilogy. She lives in Pennsylvania with her family where her favorite room remains her bedroom turned library. Having loved reading and creating the written word since she was a small girl, Kelseyleigh is a self-professed bibliophile with a passion for both the fantastical and historical. She also has a strong passion for chocolate, but that book has yet to be written.

If I Fall (Science Fiction & Fantasy)
1 chapters   —   updated May 13, 2015 06:32PM
Description: History never changes. It repeats. It errs. It lies. After all, it lied about us. My name is Elvira Hamilton and I have a secret . . . I'm not like you. In 1901, there was a war. My people were special and yours were jealous. So jealous, you tried to kill us. All of us. One night, the war reached my village. Those who despised us had come, at last. Radicals we called them. My sister and I escaped, but my mother and father were not so lucky. With the war raging in England, we only had one choice left. Escape the war and flee to America with the other refugees. The only problem was, we were not refugees and we were not supposed to leave. Full of action, suspense, magic, and love, If I Fall is a story about a girl with a Mark everyone fears, though as far as she knows, she has no powers. As a stowaway on the RMS Celtic, a series of encounters with a Mr. Laurence has her in a bind. Should she tell him the truth and risk being handed over to the Radicals or should she continue to lie, risking the loss of his trust and friendship along with everything else?

If I Resist by Kelseyleigh Reber
“That is normal...To be afraid. Do not let anyone tell you any different. No one can ever say that what you feel is right or wrong, or pointless or unworthy of your time. That is a truth for you to decide. Ignorance is bliss, but there comes a time when you must open your eyes and face the truth—when you must be honest with yourself.”

If I Resist by Kelseyleigh Reber
“People are always quick to call evil what they do not know. The unknown sprouts fear. It spreads like an infection, burrowing into every facet of their lives. They need a scapegoat, someone to blame. Fingers are pointed, accusations are made, and a target lands on somebody’s back. They grow angry. They turn violent.
To history, human nature must be a stubborn and tiring student. No matter how many times history tries to show it the error of its ways, it never learns from its mistakes.”

“That is life, isn’t it? Fate. Luck. Chance. A long series of what-if’s that lead from one moment to the next, time never pausing for you to catch your breath, to make sense of the cards that have been handed to you. And all you can do is play your cards and hope for the best, because in the end, it all comes back to those three basics.
Fate. Luck. Chance.”
Kelseyleigh Reber, If I Fall

“Things are never as they seem. A person. A Mark. A statement. They are always deeper than we perceive, like walking in the ocean and suddenly dipping under the surface because the bottom has disappeared beneath your feet. The water appears shallow until you are suddenly flailing around beneath the surface, desperately searching for stable ground once again.”
Kelseyleigh Reber

“But circumstances change. Small causes lead to large effects. New paths are added.
And all anyone can do . . . is choose.”

“It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

“I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
