Book review: For All Eternity – Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins
For All Eternity, from Dark Opus Press, featuring my story ‘Hearts of Gold’ is themed around the seven deadly sins. I was even more pleased than usual to have a story accepted into this anthology as the book only contains seven stories – one story per sin, which makes for intriguing reading.
I really like the concept of this book and when I received my hard copy I was pleasantly surprised to find the interior beautifully formatted and with a fantastic illustration for each story, drawn by the...

How to write more happy stories in 2013 – my writerly new year’s resolutions!
So, the project I’m embarking upon in 2013 and have so far been quite quiet about (due to deciding whether or not I’m going to be dumb enough to undertake it) is to write one flash fiction every day for the duration of 2013.
Yes, this is a new year’s resolution of sorts – the kind of ‘write something every day’ one that most writers make every year. However this one isn’t just write something every day, it’s write and finish something cohesive and readable every day and even now it feels like...

Why I’m Crying Just Like Anybody
Well, far from it, actually – this year has been fantastic for me as a writer! I’ve been delighted to have several stories picked up for publication in anthologies and the lastest one is due for release on November 20.
My short story ‘Phantoms’ will appear in The Fiction Desk’s fourth anthology, ‘Crying Just Like Anybody’. I’m a big fan of The Fiction Desk anthologies and I’m thrilled that my work will be appearing in one beside such talented authors as The Fiction Desk publishes.
The running o...

(Re-) Vamp-Bite-Size at lunchtime
Last Wednesday 17 October, as part of the Chester Literature Festival, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to deliver a Bitesize at Lunchtime talk on my experiences co-publishing Re-Vamp with LC Hu.
The Bitesize at Lunchtime slots are a popular annual feature of the festival, providing lunch-hour-timed talks by local writers. This year, the talks are being held in the lovely surroundings of the Magistrate’s Court at Chester Town Hall and I can confirm that the acoustics were very go...

Serving up the words at the Poetry Takeaway
Yesterday I took a break from being a prose writer to moonlight for the day as a poetry chef at The Poetry Takeaway.
The Poetry Takeaway is a burger van that serves as the world’s first mobile poetry emporium, staffed by poets who serve up free bespoke poems on any subject to members of the public in 15 minutes or so. It’s run by super talented poetry powerhouse Head Poetry Chef Tim Clare, who came up with the idea. The Takeaway marked the start of the 2012 Chester Literature Festival which ru...

Breaking Literature Festival news! The Poetry Takeaway Van
This Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October 2012, 11am to 4pm, will see the Poetry Takeaway van open for business outside Chester Town Hall, as part of the 2012 Literature Festival events, and me and the illustrious Catherine Marseille will be moonlighting (daylighting?!) as poetry chefs. Between 12 and 2pm on Saturday, me and Catherine will be serving up tasty bites of poetry on demand – what this means is, you come along and order your takeaway poem on any subject you like and within ten minutes...

Re-Vamping the Chester Literature Festival
It’s nearly October and that means it’s nearly time again for the annual Chester Literature Festival.
This year, as well as attending some of the fantastic events planned (particularly looking forward to David Crystal and Sandi Toskvig), I’ll be hosting my own Bitesize at Lunchtime event which will involve me sharing some tips on self publishing. I’m hoping that the fact that I’m pretty much self-taught in writing and publishing will actually be a benefit, as all my tips come from personal exp...
