After a decade of trying to convince himself to think 'inside' the box (lots of them), he fled to Vermont where he attempted to regain his sanity by chopping wood and s

Money of course! Wait, I thought the question was, "What's the one thing you miss about being a writer?"

I won't kid you, writing is hard. Many days I feel like a boxer who's just too tired to get back in the ring. But every now and then there come these transcendental moments when the characters speak to me, or a plot knot unravels with elegant simplicity, or a thousand perfect words appear on the screen as fast as I can type them. My favorite "best thing" is feeling I ought to stop for a bite of lunch only to find it's 5:30PM. I write for those moments. (less)

Hello Again!

Thrilled to hear Paolo Baciagalupi tomorrow night at ASU. He'll tell us why Phoenix will be a waterless wasteland 100 yrs from now. Maybe. Well, that's my prognosis, anyway. If you love speculative fiction, The Windup Girl is one of the best I've read in the last…oh, twenty years. His new book, The Water Knife, is about water wars in the American Southwest. A real page-turner, or finger-swiper, de Read more of this blog post »

A little too brief

Too much that was obvious. Too little that shed new light, either on the past or on possible solutions. As basic a primer as one could imagine.

Magnificent

One of the greatest science fiction anthologies ever written. Book 7 is just as good as book one. Not just the mind-bending plots, but characters that will stick with you for ages. This is a nine-book series. I wish it could go on forever

A perfect little imagining

You don’t need to be a fan of Shakespeare to love this little gem. Wear your doublet and hose, for you are about to be dropped lovingly and convincingly into the plague-ridden England of the late 16th century.

“Why can’t I remember that not once have I ever seen a coin, whether grimy copper or bright gold, that had but one side.”
Andrew Levkoff, A Mixture of Madness

“He wore the memory of her embrace like armor, and though he knew it would not save his life, it would be all that was left to him to ease his passage into whatever lay beyond.”
Andrew Levkoff, A Mixture of Madness

“There is no such thing as unrequited love; the phrase ought to be stricken from the lexicon. Love is a thing shared, an intertwining of essential separateness into something not quite alone. There is nothing like it under the heavens. Like bread, it will not be made with flour or water alone; the recipe requires both. Guarding each other’s vulnerability provides the yeast that makes it rise, and salt from the tears that caring brings lends the finishing touch.”
Andrew Levkoff, The Other Alexander

Kenneth G. Ross

“Alone with my wine and my misery, I was convinced that life was composed of a string of “if only’s” leading from one self-inflicted bungle to the next until at some point, one’s final iteration of the excuse became one’s final utterance, and one expired.”
Andrew Levkoff, The Other Alexander

“One has to be at least as ancient as I am now to see that if you try to make sense of life, if you look for patterns and meaning, not only are you bound to be disappointed, you are likely to waste a good deal of precious time.”
Andrew Levkoff, A Mixture of Madness

“One can get past just about anything, given enough time, even when one shouldn’t.”
