Six Resolutions For Living in Light of the Gospel

Don Carson, during his final session at The Gospel Coalition’s 2012 Ontario Regional Conference, offered an exhortation to the attendees as he concluded the conference’s message preaching from Philippians 4:4-20. In this message, he offered six resolutions for living in light of the gospel–for working out our own salvation with fear and trembling, even as it is God at work within us. His six resolutions follow, along with my paraphrased notes of Dr. Carson’s commentary:

1. Resolve to rejoice a...

FromCulture to Christ: Secret Crowds

Joe Thorn:

Many things I see and hear throughout the day remind me of God and the gospel. Often times these things have nothing to do with God directly, but my thoughts tend to drift back to the truth. Recently the song “Secret Crowds” by Angels and Airwaves has triggered thoughts on church planting and the spread of the gospel. The chorus in particular sticks in my head.

Profession Without Prayer

I have looked careful over the lives of God’s saints in the Bible. I cannot find one whose history much is told, from Genesis to Revelation — who was not a person of prayer. I find it mentioned as a characteristic of the godly, that “they call on the Father,” that “they call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” I find it recorded as a characteristic of the wicked, that “they do not call upon the Lord” (1 Peter 1:17; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Psalm 14:4).

I have read the lives of many eminent Chri...

Am I Called to Preach?

Colin Adams:

Many a young Christian man asks, “How can I know if God is calling me to preach?” The question is vitally significant but the answer is not simplistic. How indeed?

God’s Astounding, Jaw-Dropping, Eye-Popping Patience

Mark Altrogge:

Psalm 106 is a litany of how God’s people spit in his face again and again, yet when things sour they come back to God, and he forgives and blesses them again and again. It’s a broken record of their failures and God’s patience.

What Is Your Life?

This week I’m hanging out at The Gospel Coalition’s 2012 Ontario Regional Conference (where, for those attending, you can get a free copy of Awaiting a Savior at one of the exhibitor tables) and already it’s been a tremendous experience. Rather than live-blogging the conference in its entirety, I really felt like it was important to sit back (for the most part) and take in the content and see what the Lord would teach me through it. And already, there have been a couple of really big things....

DVD Review: Basic – Who is God?

Choosing small group curriculum is never easy, as many a discipleship or small groups pastor can tell you. There is a wealth of great material out there… and more than a few lemons. Having experienced both over the years we’ve led small groups, I was excited and a little nervous about Basic: Who is God? featuring Francis Chan.

Because people in our group are coming from a lot of different places (a couple are even coming out of a different Christian tradition altogether), it was really importa...

DeeperApplication

Darryl Dash:

I have a problem with application in sermons. It’s often poorly done. Granted, this is because application is actually one of the hardest parts of preaching. I agree with what Haddon Robinson has said: more heresy is preached in application than in any other part of the sermon.

Marriage Puts the Glory of the Gospel on Display

Marriage continues to be a hot topic in the news and around the Internet. But it’s not just in the news, it’s in pop culture, too. Marvel Comics came out in full support of gay marriage with one of their characters marrying his boyfriend in a June issue of an X-Men comic. DC Comics announced one of their “iconic” characters will be coming out around the same time. There’s all this talk about the rightness or wrongness of same-sex marriage, culture wars, and a lot of it on both sides is starti...
