We'd Rather Be Writing

I’m excited about the new cookbook adventure called, WE’D RATHER BE WRITING: 88 AUTHORS SHARE TIMESAVING DINNER RECIPES AND OTHER TIPS.

Lois Winston, USA Today bestselling author, invited me to participate in her new cookbook, and of course, I jumped at the chance. I’m honored to be one of the 88 authors sharing our time-saving recipes and tips while juggling life and family responsibilities with our writings.
Our cookbook is offered on Amazon for $.99 with a portion of the proceeds donated to No Kid Hungry: http://www.nokidhungry.org

We'd Rather Be Writing Have you ever wished you could find more time to do the things you want to do, rather than just doing the things you have to do? Most authors juggle day jobs and family responsibilities along with their writing. Because they need to find time to write, they look for ways to save time in other aspects of their lives.

Cooking often takes up a huge chunk of time. In We’d Rather Be Writing: 88 Authors Share Timesaving Dinner Recipes and Other Tips you’ll find easy, nutritious recipes for meat, poultry, pasta, soup, stew, chili, and vegetarian meals. All of the recipes require a minimum of prep time, freeing you up to read, exercise, garden, craft, write, spend more time with family, or whatever.

Within the pages of We’d Rather Be Writing: 88 Authors Share Timesaving Dinner Recipes and Other Tips you’ll be introduced to authors who write a wide range of fiction—everything from mystery to romance to speculative fiction to books for children, young adults, and new adults—and some who write nonfiction. Some of the authors write sweet; others write steamy. Some write cozy; others write tense thrillers.

Some are debut authors with only one published book; others are multi-published and have had long publishing careers. Some are New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors who may or may not be familiar to you, but being a bestselling author doesn’t mean they still don’t have to juggle their day job along with their writing.

The authors who contributed to this book are a rather creative and resourceful bunch when it comes to carving out time from their busy lives. So in addition to timesaving recipes, within the pages of this book you’ll find timesaving and organizational tips for other aspects of your life. And if you happen to be a writer, you’ll also find a plethora of great ideas to help you organize your writing life. Authors who contributed to this book include: Lisa Alber, Reggi Allder, Judy Alter, Krista Ames, Rose Anderson, Cori Lynn Arnold, Judy Baker, Beverley Bateman, Donnell Ann Bell, Paula Gail Benson, Kris Bock, Maureen Bonatch, Ava Bradley, Susan Breen, Lida Bushloper, Michelle Markey Butler, Ashlyn Chase, Judy Copek, Maya Corrigan, Mariposa Cruz, Melinda Curtis, Lesley A. On a more personal note, I just returned from a fun, family trip to Disney World. We had a blast. Yup, we did, even with six adults and one child we played like we were preteens, laughing, running, walking (nearly 10 miles a day), riding all the rides, eating way too much, especially at Epcot where the Wine and Food Festival was going on! Even when the rain poured, we donned our ponchos and continued to trek our way through every theme park to ride those fast breathtaking rollercoasters.

That’s me! Moira, my granddaughter is behind me! She loved it too.

Since I was on vacation during the time my Yellow Creek Novels boxed set pricing was supposed to increase, now the set will stay at $.99 until Halloween! Happy Reading.

Newsletter or Not?

A Dilemma
I’ve spend the last month thinking about my newsletter. Why? I use Mad Mimi, but they now are having issues with people’s email addresses within Yahoo and AOL accounts. So, I opted out and started looking at Mail Champ and a few others, some requiring a monthly fee, some free for a certain amount of addresses. While mulling over the idea of not having a newsletter and concentrating on my blog, I ran across this blog on Why You Shouldn't Create a Newsletter (and What to Do Instead)http://boostblogtraffic.com/create-a-newsletter/ of course, you have to make your own decision, and you’re newsletter might be the most viewed and productive marketing you have for your career. Anyway, it was an interesting read. Check it out.
I know social media changes continuously, and what works today might not work tomorrow!  So what do I do?  What do you do? Is your Newsletter accomplishing all you hoped? What’s your opinion on Newsletters? Are blogs a better way to go?
Only ten more days left to purchase the Yellow Creek Novels boxed set for $.99  A boxed set of three novels, unraveling haunting mysteries from the past connecting to the present within the paranormal and ghostly spirit worlds.
Secret PastUnraveling the mystery of her grandmother’s secret past leads a rare gold coin, a Tommy gun, murder, and love.
Ghost ThunderSecrecy, murder, and love intertwines when a ghost horse leads her through an investigation, endangering her unborn child.

Summer Read in a Boxed Set

August! Where is the summer going? One thing for sure, its going too fast. We’ve had some hot weather, so I bought Stanley a doggy swimming pool. Our new family addition has been with us now for almost four months, and he has succeeded in training his pet parents successfully. He has probably reached his full size of 15 inches, 15 pounds. STANLEY BAKER 6 MOS OLD  Stanley’s a sweetie, except for one problem; he is a kleptomaniac. We can’t turn our backs on him, or he’s out the door with anything he can grab, especially eyeglasses, socks, shoes, and to my hubby’s dismay, the TV remote!

I’m excited to show off new updated book covers for two of my Yellow Creek novels: Amazon

Guest J.M. Maurer

I have met a new author friend that I would like to introduce you to and I know you’ll enjoy hearing about her new releases as much as I did.
My guest today is J.M. Maurer.
She lives with her family in Chicago, and makes it a point to never work on a full moon and cringes when a coworker uses the “Q” word—never, ever say, “It’s a quiet day today," at her day job.
Known for being overly superstitious, she can usually be found scraping at the remnants of a Nutella container, screaming at a hockey game, or putting pen to paper, allowing the “real” crazy voices in her head to come alive. And after all this, it’s no wonder she’s an incurable romantic and loves escaping the rat race of life to immerse herself inside the world of a really good romance book . . . because, after all, what’s better than a happily-ever-after?

JM has two new releases:
Seeking Love (Emerging From Darkness Book 1)

Publish Date: April 2, 2015
Categories: Humor & Entertainment, Love, Sex & Marriage, Literature & Fiction
Tags: J.M. Maurer, Seeking Love, registered nurse, sex therapist, humor, romance, trilogy
Amazon Reviewer: “Seeking Love” is a darling debut novel from J.M. Maurer and the first in the “Emerging From Darkness” Trilogy. It is a captivating story of love, fear, and emotional anxiety mixed with the author’s quirky sense of humor…You won’t be able to put this down!”
Blurb: Every day, Jessica Winters does what she does best—bury herself in patient care within the walls of the neuro intensive care unit, keeping herself busy to escape the dark sadness that controls her life. But the day she sees Matthew Moi, the intriguing man seated at her new patient’s bedside, her shattered heart begins to frantically beat once again.
As Matthew pins his mesmerizing gaze upon her, trying to distract her with his humorous and playful banter, she does her best to ignore him. Somehow he already knows a great deal about her, breaking down Jessica’s barriers and awakening her soul, drawing her out of the darkness and into his arms.

When her painful past resurfaces, revealing truths that threaten her future, Jessica struggles through her issues and fights to stay on a healing path . . . seeking love.
Excerpt:    One thing I knew: I wasn’t that woman anymore. I wouldn’t be her anymore.
My heart was racing at the thought of being separated from Matthew by only the door, and I watched as it opened, knowing he stood mere feet away. I drew in a deep breath to calm my frantic nerves and steady my racing heart. It was the moment my eyes would see him again, and the same moment I knew all involuntary muscle movements would cease.
As Matthew stepped in and around the door, his alluring eyes captured me. The feeling was nothing new. I’d been imprisoned by his gaze before. And locked in it again, I watched as he drifted to me, the indisputable chemistry between us palpable and absolute. His mesmerizing eyes had hypnotized my burning soul, completely bewitching me.
“Hello, Jessica,” he murmured, pointing to an open area of the bed. “Mind if I sit?”
I gave a slight shake of my head, having difficulty forming the simple word “no,” and watched as he made himself comfortable facing me. His crisp charcoal-colored trousers bunched as he scooted on the bed. My sight roamed along his classic plum-colored dress shirt and stopped searching once I focused on his face.

Seeking Redemption (Emerging From Darkness Book 2)
Publish Date: May 2, 2015
Amazon Reviewer: “JM Maurer has done it again…couldn’t put the book down and left me wanting more. I simply can’t wait for her third book. JM Maurer is a definitely on my top list of great authors. Romance readers, you won’t be disappointed in these books.”
Blurb: After surviving a bitter divorce and emerging from a darkness that became all too familiar, Jessica finds herself on top of the world, her soulful awakening allowing her to feel again, trust again, and even love again. Her painful past, however, is relentless, both physically and emotionally, bombarding her daily and not allowing her to overcome the lingering demons that ultimately control her life.
As Matthew lovingly guides her toward a healthy future, his own secrets become known, threatening to destroy the trusting relationship that had quickly grown between them. But despite what life throws her way, Jessica pledges to put the past in the past, accepting that events are often out of her control. She fights for a future with the man who drew her out of the darkness, steering her onto a healing path . . . seeking redemption.
Excerpt:     Grandma O flipped the light switch to what she called my office and stood just inside the door, her soft features and gentle smile inviting me in. I shivered, poised one step away, with a strange yet familiar emotion rushing through me—an awareness that the instant I entered, my life would be forever changed. Again.
Was this Matthew’s plan all along? They all seemed in on it, the thought making me feel railroaded and agitated, yet oddly aroused and enchanted too. Unsure how to deal with such conflicting emotions, I moved forward, looking to Grandma O for answers as I walked through.
The office was spacious, slightly smaller than Matthew’s, with a mahogany desk in the far corner and in front of an expansive bank of floor-to-ceiling windows. I ran my fingertips along the colorful wall of psychology books and periodicals as I walked along, passing a leather couch on my way to the desk, my desk, and paused in front of an empty nook within the bookcase.
It struck me as odd, the cold wooden surface needing something to spruce it up, make it mine. I had to think about that, my anxiety making it difficult to ponder the issue, my restlessness preventing me from staying in one place.
I moved to the windows and stared out the tiny cracks between the blinds, the world outside just as complicated as the one I had chosen to live in.
“We all read your master’s thesis,” Grandma O said, her voice pulling me out of my thoughts. “It’s obvious you have a natural gift for research and writing.”
I turned and looked at her, questioning how they’d gotten their hands on a copy.
Sedation in the ICU: Patient Accounts of Their Dreams, Their Pain, Their Fears; I hadn’t published it. As it was, after countless hours revisiting old charts and conducting hundreds of interviews, I’d never been more nervous or scared the instant it was pulled from my tight grip to be placed into the hands of someone who would actually read it. There was no way I’d ever publish it, opening myself up to a world filled with critics.
“If you’re wondering, Dr. Moi is a personal friend of Professor Marienetti. The sexual fantasies accounted for and described within your research were fascinating, probably more so than Dr. Marienetti could digest. We’re baffled as to why you chose not to publish. The results, Jess, are far reaching, from ICUs to dentists’ offices. You have a special gift; embrace it.”
She walked toward me and leaned her back against the wall, her gaze drinking in the room.    “This office has been vacant, just waiting for you. You could do great things here.” She patted my arm, her grandmotherly smile telling me it would all be okay. “I’m next door if you need anything.”
Embrace it, I thought, watching as she walked out the door. I’d heard that advice before—from Matthew. I sighed and looked down upon the desk, the one I knew would take me a while to start calling my own.
My desk, my office, my couch, it all sounded quite foreign. I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not.

Kim McMahill's New Release

I’m excited to welcome Kim McMahill to my blog today. She’s sharing her new release with us and if Kim’s a new author for you, please check out her adventurous stories that will carry you to different parts of the world.
Welcome Kim. Please tell us about your new release, A Dose of Danger.
Judy: We’d like to know a little about your main character in your new release, A Dose of Danger. Kim:  What drives and motivates Grace Talbot?  Her love of animals and her sense of duty to family, small as that may be. Judy:  What does Grace do for a living and what does Grace mean to Logan when they first meet? Kim:  She’s a researcher for a company, which develops and manufacture on nutritional supplements for people and animals. Grace and Logan meet under less than ideal circumstances for official business and have no previous connection. Logan Carlson is the Wyoming sheriff’s deputy investigating the fire that sent Grace’s uncle to the hospital.Judy:  Why the location, and was it a real-life connection? Kim:  The book is set mostly in Wyoming, but some of the scenes take place in Salt Lake City, Utah. I chose Wyoming because it’s a place I know well, and I needed a location for a remote ranch with spotty cell phone coverage.  The ranch is completely fictional, but when I drive by the location where I envision it to be, I always stop for a moment and take it in. I also needed a reasonably large city within at least a very long days drive away, and Salt Lake fit the bill. Judy:  Is A Dose of Danger part of a series? Kim:  I do have a series mapped out and A Dose of Danger is the first book. I have the second nearly complete and two more outlined. I won’t divulge any titles yet, since my publisher often has great ideas and may throw something out I hadn’t thought of. Judy:  Do you have a favorite scene that you can share? Kim:  There are some pretty intense scenes, but this scene makes me smile.
Here’s an excerpt:She hadn’t heard Logan enter, but she didn’t object when he pried the handset from her fingers and put his arm around her shoulders.  “Hey, Moss. How are you feeling today?” Grace could only hear one side of the conversation, but it was enough to know Moss wasn’t the only one who cared about her fate.  “Don’t worry. I’ll keep her safe, I promise. Yes, I’ve noticed she can be a bit stubborn, but she knows when to cooperate and hasn’t given me too much trouble. No, I can’t give you any details. The less you know the better. We’ll leave as soon as the sheriff calls back with a location. “You have what? Where? If we need it, thanks. If we don’t I never heard those words. Yes, I noticed the trailer lights aren’t working, and the clutch on your truck sticks a bit. I may be from Arizona, but I do know how to pull a horse trailer and operate a truck in four-wheel-drive. We better not tie up the line too long, but we’ll call as soon as we get to wherever we’re going. What? Yes, I’d be happy to do that for you. Take care.”By the time Logan hung up, the tears were gone. Hearing Moss treating the big, strong deputy like a child made her smile. She missed her uncle so much it hurt. Even in a hospital bed hundreds of miles away, he was still trying to take care of her. “What would you be happy to do for Uncle Moss?”  “This,” he replied as he pulled her into his arms and kissed her. His lips moved slowly over hers until he felt her arms slide up around his neck. He deepened the kiss, and her response sent fire through his body. Even without his heavy coat on, he knew he would be burning just as hot. She fit against him like they were made for each other. When he finally let her go, she looked up at him with a wicked smile that made him itch to grab for her again. As if sensing his intention, Grace took several steps back. “I’m fairly certain that wasn’t what Moss asked you to do for him.”  “Maybe he said something about giving you a hug for him, but I started tuning him out when he decided I needed driving instructions. Anyway, I didn’t want to disappoint an injured old man, so I winged it.”  Grace studied him for a moment. Maybe he won’t walk out on me, but even if he does, I might as well make the most of every moment we have together. She smiled and moved within reach. Logan needed no further encouragement. He pulled her toward him. With one arm firmly around her waist, he ran his fingers through her hair. “Yes, those curls are just as soft as they look,” he moaned as his lips descended to hers, cutting off any response.Blurb: When researcher Grace Talbot and her team discover a possible solution for weight loss they become targets of a group dedicated to controlling the multi-billion dollar a year diet-product industry. Her unsanctioned testing methods bring tragedy to the family ranch, and the attention of the local sheriff’s deputy. With her colleagues either dead, missing, or on the run she soon realizes she must trust the deputy with her life, but can she trust him with her heart?    Judy:  Do you have any special words for your fans: Kim:  Thank you everyone who has ever read one of my books. I especially appreciate those who have taken the time to post all the kind reviews. Without an audience, there’s no point in telling stories.Judy:  Tell us a little about yourself… Kim:  I grew up in Wyoming, which is probably where I developed my sense of adventure. I started out writing non-fiction, but my passion for exotic world travel, outrageous adventures, stories of survival, and happily-ever-after endings soon drew me into a world of romantic suspense. Along with writing adventure novels I have also published over eighty travel and geographic articles, and contributed to a travel anthology and cookbook. When not writing, I enjoy gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.Judy:  Where can my reader find you?http://KimMcMahill.comhttp://KimMcMahil.blogspot.comhttps://Twitter.com/kimmcmahill Judy:  A couple of quick questions and favorites so my readers can get to know you as an author:What do you do to relax?   Put together jigsaw puzzlesFavorite spot? The mountains Cat or dog?  DogFavorite drink?  CaipirinhasFavorite season? SummerHobbies/past time? If you like Salmon and love to have a dill spread for you fish, here’s my favorite recipe. My hubby, Brett, doesn’t care for salmon, but he like it with the cucumber-dill spread, as long as the salmon’s grilled.
Dill Spread1 ½ cups plain nonfat yogurt¾ teaspoon grated lemon zest¼   cup plus 1 ½ teaspoon lemon juice1 tablespoon plus 1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard¾ teaspoon salt2 medium cucumbers, peeled, seed, and diced¾ cup snipped fresh dill and refrigerate
Served over cooked salmon.Of course, a tall glass of ice tea goes great with the grilled salmon. My perfect recipe for ice tea:
Sprinkle a pinch of baking soda into a 64 ounce, heat proof glass pitcher. Pour in 2 cups of boiling water, add 6 tea bags and cover and steep for 15 minutes. Remove the tea bags, stir in ¾ cups white sugar (I like my tea sweeter, so I add 1 cup sugar), then, pour in 6 cups of cool water, refrigerate. Pour the sweet tea over a glass of ice, squirt in some lemon, and enjoy.

Spirit Catcher

The first day of Spring is March 20. Other than the date, how do you know Spring is here?
I feel and hear Spring. It’s like the whole Earth is waking up and smiling at me with birds chirping, blue skies, flowers peeking out, and bugs emerging ‒ all these little things announce Spring to me.
Happy Spring

Another exciting thing happening on the first day of spring is the solar eclipse. For those of you in the UK, you’ll be able to experience the first solar eclipse of 2015.
The eclipse will happen on the day of the Vernal Equinox! This is rare and if you miss it this time, you’ll have to wait until 2034. To see the total solar eclipse, you need to live or visit Faroe Islands, somewhere off of Scotland. I wish!

Judy:  Why the location and was it a real-life connection?
Mary:  All the Beckett siblings call their parents The Elders. They grew up in Brooklyn, and they live and work in various places of New York and Brooklyn. Except for Glenna. She owns a Vintage Shop in Calistoga, California. The Beckett Series is a combination of six stories, one for each sibling. Books available now: Disappear, Innocent, QuietBooks coming soon: Illusion, Profit, and Abandoned

Judy:Wow, you’re certainly a busy, energetic author. Do you have any special words for your fans?
Mary:  I have the best fans, friends, and family. Without them I might as well give up writing. Other than, I really do enjoy the craft of writing.
Judy:  Where can my reader find you?
