You Have to Believe It Before You’ll See It

I hope this finds you well! I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts this week, The Author Biz, in which the host Stephen interviews Scott Paul about his six-figure year as an author.
Toward the end, Stephen asks a great question:
What advice would you have for someone who wants to make that kind of money, but isn’t already (and may not think they can)? (Note: I’m paraphrasing.)
My first thought was: They have to begin to believe they can make that kind of money!
In Prosperity for Writers , I talk about identifying, and if necessary, writing a new money story. If, when you hear a story like Scott’s, or Steve Scott‘s, or Michael Anderle‘s, and all you think is, Well, that could never be me, you’re right! But if you think, I (can) make a healthy living writing non-fiction books that change the world, well guess what, Sparky? You’re also right!
So you have to decide: what do you want to be right about?
Below are some resources you might find handy in your pursuit of an abundant (or more abundant) writing career.
What’s your money story? I’d love to know! Write an email or share it with others in the comment section below.

How to Choose the Right Keywords for Your Book
A couple of weeks ago, I talked about putting your books for sale on the various online retailer platforms. One piece of information you’ll need to fill out is also one of the most under-utilized options for helping retailers sell more of your books. Keywords aren’t just key words , they are strings of words you can choose, and correctly identifying the right keywords can connect those searching for books on your topic with your book.
To clarify, simplify and even provide a way for you to quickly determine your keywords, you’ll want to read this in-depth article by my author colleague Dave Chesson: Complete Guide to Kindle Keywords. Keep in mind you’ll be using keywords on almost every online retailer, and knowing what words drive people to purchase your books is an important key to your success. Dave has a cool tool you can purchase, too, that will make choosing the right keywords even faster and easier than simply knowing what to do!
Still have questions? Feel free to ask me anything via email or in the blog’s comment section.
Happy writing!

8 Keys for Being Irresistible to New Business

How is your year going?
I’m only sending one newsletter a month, so I’ve made this a mega-post I hope you find incredibly helpful. Once you’ve had a chance to take a look, would you email me and let me know what topic you’d like me to tackle for April?
Lately, I’ve been a witness to a number of people trying to “make business happen,” all the while struggling and striving. Truly, they are struggling when they could be attracting and thriving. You see, it is possible to force people to do business with you, to bully them into submission, to give you a yes to shut you up when they really want to say “No!” and run the other direction.
And, why on Earth would you want to do that? I know you wouldn’t! You most likely want to work with and serve, the exact right people at the exact right time, effortlessly exceeding your goals, achieving the mega-success you dream about, and (you know I can’t resist!) turn your Vision to Reality ! While I’m a believer in the Law of Attraction, I also believe, “As you pray, move your feet.” In other words, with a vision, goals, and intention must come good old-fashioned action. I know from experience there are actions you can take to magnify your desired positive results, and today I’m sharing the 8 Keys to Being Irresistible to New Business.
Short of sending you to a charm-school intensive, these are the top tried-and-true methods for upping your approachability aptitude and magnetizing new business.
Key #1: Know What’s Up and Have a Positive Conversation Starter. Remember when you had to “keep up with current events” in school? The grown-up version is to be aware of what’s going on in the world … but not so aware that is causes you to stress or have high anxiety. I subscribe to The Skimm, and in about three minutes I’m up to date on current events. That way when someone asks your opinion on world events, you can weigh in. Note: I suggest avoiding highly-charged topics such as sex, politics or religion. Do you agree? What topics do you avoid? I’d love to know.
There’s also another tactic that will make you an interesting conversationalist and help you increase your motivation level and positive attitude (in ways the news never can): read a fabulous book (for some top-notch suggestions go here or listen to the James Altucher Show, Entrepreneur on Fire or Hal Elrod’s Achieve Your Goals podcast. You’ll stumble upon a nugget you can be ready to share with the people you meet over the course of the day, creating interest in you and, more than likely, your products or services. In other words, be ready to initiate a positive conversation with everyone you meet, and those same people will be attracted to your positive energy, want to know more about you, spend more time around you, and get to know you. Can you see how this would exponentially increase the likelihood they engage you and your services or buy your products as well?
Key #2: Find and Focus on Common Points of Interest {CPIs}. The fastest rapport builder in existence is discovering and discussing what you have in common with someone. Whether you’re from the same small hometown, have the same alma mater, or love the same hobby, discovering those CPIs will make you instantly fascinating. How do you uncover these relationship-enhancing gems? Well, thank you for asking!
Use the “W” questions: Who, What, When, Where and Why? Who are you? Who do you work for? What do you do for a living? What are you excited about? When is your next vacation? When did you graduate? Where are you from? Where do you live {what part of town}? Why do you do what you do? Why did you move here? These questions, when asked from a state of curiosity, can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship … and we all know that people want to do business with their friends: people they know, like and trust. By asking the right questions, listening intently, and engaging and being engaging, you become someone everyone looks forward to knowing and hiring.
Key #3: Be “fabulous,” “excellent,” or “fantastic!” My brother Justin was born when I was 11 years old, and by the time he was 3 years old, my father had taught him to “Fantastic!” whenever someone asked, “How are you?” Cute on a 3-year-old, and he even answered that way after he’d fallen off his bike and was nursing a boo-boo. What was interesting to watch was the way that word “fantastic” affected not only him but the people around him. What’s even more interesting is that almost no-one uses “fantastic” when describing how they are as adults. And yet, there are studies that show that the words you use impact you, more than you might think.
Consider this: when someone upsets you-you can become “miffed,” you can feel “angry,” or you can become “enraged.” You might note that those three words all have a different impact on you when you read them. Imagine the deeper impact the words you choose have on your stress and anxiety levels. Now, let’s go the opposite direction: instead of answering, “I’m okay,” to “How are you?” try, “If I were any better, I’d be twins!” or say “I’m getting better and better,” on those days when you’re aren’t feeling 110%. You’ll feel better because you’re declaring it is so. In addition, you will feel amazing to those around you, and by virtue of the fact that you’re a positive person, you will find more and more people wanting to work with you and purchase your products or services. See what I did there? Here’s your action step: define your standard answer to “How are you?” right now, and be sure your answer is something awesome to live up to.
Key #4: Open Up. Just as when I suggested finding common points of interest with anyone you talk with, I’m also going to suggest you make sure your body language encourages people to approach and interact with you. In the fantastic book What Every BODY is Saying by Joseph Navarro {a former FBI counterintelligence officer and recognized expert in body language}, you can learn a lot about body language … both what others are saying with theirs, and what you’re saying with yours. A few suggestions to get you started: smile with your whole face. A closed-lipped smile just isn’t the same as when you’re showing your pearly whites. Crossing your arms and legs conveys, at the very least, disinterest, and at the very most, hostility. Keep your limbs uncrossed and while you’re at it, make solid eye contact and practice good listening skills. The best conversationalists, ironically, are those folks who listen more than they speak. Practicing open body language is just one more way others will feel good from being around you, and when people come in contact with your openness, they are more like to open their wallets. Do you agree?
Key #5: Say What YOU Want. What you want in your life and business, and what you’ve actually got, may just not be the same thing. In fact, I’m going to bet they aren’t at all the same. And, you may have all sorts of reasons about why this is so: the economy sucks, or the old, “I have to settle for what I can get, Coach” or even, “I’m lucky I even have anything.” I’m going to throw a big BS up on the screen there Sparky, and say what you’ve got has everything to do with you and very little to do with anything else. You’ve got what you’ve got because (a) you haven’t had the courage to ask for what you really want, and (b) you’ve settled for what you’ve been given. The most attractive people in the world are those who speak their minds, say what they want and how they want it {in a nice, respectful way, of course}. If you’re tired of “I’m lucky I even have anything.” or even, “I have to settle for what I can get, Coach” and want something more, well, what is it exactly that you want?
If you’re charging $1000 for something worth $3,500, why are you doing that? Because you think people will only pay $1000? They will if that’s what you ask for. Are you insuring Gremlins instead of Maseratis? That’s because you’re not asking the right questions of the right people. Starting right there with yourself. Ultimately, you have to a-s-k to g-e-t … but first, you’ve got to define exactly what you want and be determined not to settle for less. What you might not know is that affirmations work, and an affirmation is anything you say over and over (even if it’s not in the affirmative). “I never have enough time,” said over and over is an affirmation, but is that really what you want, to not have enough time? Of course not … so instead say, “I always have enough time for what’s important to me” and you will. This works with business, too … “My clients happily pay my fee and constantly refer new clients to me.” That’s what we call an affirmation jingle, and it works like a charm. Don’t believe me? Go ahead — try to prove me wrong by saying it over and over for a week, and then let me know what happens…
Key #6: Say What YOU Want {Part Deux}. Now that you know what you want in the first way I meant it let’s get clear on what you want regarding communication and your connections. In other words, there are many ways to get information from family, friends, clients, customers and connections, but I’m going to guess you have your favorites. Some people love phone calls; other people loathe the phone. The best way to track me down is by texting me; the worst way is through Facebook Messages {I hardly ever see them}. I love a great phone call, but only during certain hours, the rest of the time you can send me an email {which I will do my best to respond to within 2 business days}. By all means, let the rest of the world in on your communication preferences … you’ll be easier to reach and a happier person. Happy people are magnetic! If you’re never going to listen to your voicemail, change your out-going message with the best way to reach you, and keep your voicemail full so no new messages can be left. If email is a huge irritant, put an auto-responder about the best way to connect with you. Every possible means of communication is meant to make your life easier, and yet I see so many people complaining because their inboxes are overflowing and they are far behind in their responses. Make communication fun and effective for you, and in turn, you make yourself irresistible to others. Make sense?
Key #7: Double Your Self-Confidence. Ultimately, magnetism and attractiveness come down to how much you like yourself. The more you like yourself, dare I say love yourself {and I do!}, the more others will like you, too. I’m not talking conceit or arrogance. I believe those two characteristics are symptomatic of an insecure person. In fact, when I see someone throw a fit or become incredibly irritated, those to me are indicators that person isn’t happy with themselves. I recently said to my friend, Hal Elrod, “I really want you to be happy.” His response was incredibly telling, “I’m always happy.” That is my experience of him, and his words were true. He really is always happy (yes, even with a cancer diagnosis). He’s happy because he has done the work to keep his self-confidence and self-esteem high, and it is apparent to all those who come into contact with him. Your ability to be happy in the face of unhappy and challenging circumstances is in direct proportion to your self-confidence. The more you work on yourself, the happier and more magnetic you will be. The work is free; the results are priceless. Worth it? I’d say so! I’ve done a fair amount of work in this area myself, and it all started with this book (which I highly recommend you read, re-read, and re-read). The Self-Confidence Formula from the book is one place I’m directing you because it will work like a charm … and so will you!
Key #8: Be authentic. It is counterintuitive to be authentic with others, and yet, when we open ourselves up and show our deepest desires and fears to others, we become more human. In fact, the more authentic you are, the more comfortable you are in your own skin and show it, the more enticing you will be to others. We’re taught to keep our troubles and our big goals to ourselves, and I’m in no way suggesting you go completely open kimono and tell everyone all of your problems or your goals (there’s a time and a place … let common sense be your guide), but it’s okay now and then to say, “I’m having a rough time” and in the right space and time, with the right person, you will endear yourself to them in a way like no other. On the flip side, sharing what you’re most excited about: such as a big win or a BHAG (more about those in here) you’re working on, will cause the person you’re talking to also get excited! Ultimately, you’re looking to connect in the best way possible. I will leave you with this thought:
You can’t do the wrong thing with the right person; you can’t do the right thing with the wrong person. {Tweet this!}
So, be authentically yourself, and the right people will think you’re the fa-shizzle. And, they’ll most likely hire you or buy from you on the spot.
Have a terrific March and be sure to let me know how you’re doing!

What’s Your Secret Writing Agenda?

Happy Thursday!
Please note: Lots going on here, so we’re switching to a bi-weekly schedule. That means I’ll be coming back to your inbox in two weeks.
This week I’m continuing this short series about What it takes to make a living as a writer. So far, I’ve talked about networking, the importance of a website, and today I’m excited to hand the mike over to Brian D. Meeks, my co-author in our new book The Prosperous Writer’s Guide to Making More Money.
What’s Your Secret Writing Agenda?
It’s an ominous sounding question. You may be thinking of dark conspiracies and evil plots. That’s not exactly what I’m trying to ask, but I do enjoy an evil plot now and again.
After I had a few novels under my belt I started to come up with an underlying theme for each new project. When I wrote my satire, the underlying idea was that I hoped to educate people about some of the basic ideas of social media. I wanted the reader to not only get a chortle or two along the way, I wanted them to understand what social media was about. In the sequel, I chose to look at the world of self-publishing.
Now, in the latest non-fiction book, The Prosperous Writer’s Guide to Making More Money, which I co-authored with Honorée, the reviews are coming in and it seems we’ve hit the mark. It’s incredibly satisfying.
The biggest concern I had when we began the project was that it would require the use of the “m” word. Yes, I speak of math. (Note: Just because you saw the word math, doesn’t mean you need to stop reading and go eat an ice cream bar. Actually, that does sound lovely. Okay, get the snack but make sure you return.)
Where was I? Oh, yes, the “m” word. It strikes fear into the heart of authors everywhere. The problem is that if we want to make enough money from our books so we can climb out of the cubicle of sorrows and see the sun once in a while, we need to do some math. The first thing is calculating ROI (Return-on-Investment).
This was the spot where I was most worried readers would tune out. I needed to have a secret writing agenda. In the end, it was “math isn’t such a bad little guy if you get to know him”. The thing about math is that he can sometimes be a little skittish. His fur is often a mess. But deep down, just like every other hard thing in the world, if you rub his belly, he’ll be your friend.
So, how do I get people to rub the belly of the beast?
The answer came in trying to make people laugh. It’s hard to hate something while giggling. In fact, I’d say it’s nigh on impossible.
So, instead of giving a clinical definition of ROI, I used much more silly terms. And you know what? It worked.
In our twenty-third review, Emma Ali, wrote, “The very beginning of the book also has the clearest ROI For Dummies explanation I’ve ever seen – and I struggle with any math not directly related to calculating discounts on the clearance rack.”
That may be my favorite review of all time.
For me, having a secret agenda has allowed my mind to have a guiding north star throughout the writing process. It’s a constant clear siren that helps me reach my ultimate goal, which is to write a better book than the last one I wrote.
My secret life agenda is to continually improve and this little technique helps do just that with my writing.
—Brian D. Meeks

Top-Shelf Copywriting Will Help You Sell More Books

One of the four cornerstones of a professionally published book is the book’s description, also known as:
Back cover copy
Sales page description
Copywriting is its own animal, so even if you feel comfortable as a writer and writing your book is no big deal, unless you are a trained copywriter, you’re going to want to outsource this piece of the puzzle.
However, there are a few key things to keep in mind:
The point of the description is to educate your reader about the contents of the book from the point of view of the publisher. In other words, think of your book as the product, and you’re the company selling the product.
The description needs , which stands for something in the computer, but basically it allows for specific text, such as bold, italicized, or even LARGER BOLD TEXT (for headings). A great copywriter will provide two versions: one standard text version, and one with HTML. HTML will make your book’s description look great and stand-out!
You can (must!) repurpose your text. In other words, your book’s back cover description can also be used as the sales copy. Online retailers want your book’s description, prospective buyers read it as “sales copy.” They are essentially the same thing. BUT! Read carefully, because sometimes it needs a little editing to move from sales page copy to back cover copy (or vice versa). For example, for my latest book, I changed the last few words in the call to action (the last line of the copy) on the book sales page from “…with one click” to “today!” in order to properly work for the back cover.
If you truly are a do-it-yourself-er with a lot of extra time on your hands, allow me to recommend two books on the art of copywriting:
How to Write a Sizzling Synopsis by Bryan Cohen
The Adweek Copywriting Handbook by Joseph Sugarman
For the record, I’ve read both, and I still use a skilled copywriter for my book descriptions. It’s worth the $300 (or less), without question! But I have a natural curiosity and desire to learn, and you can never have too many skill or too much knowledge!
What piece of the writing and/or publishing puzzle can I help you with? Feel free to ask me anything via email or in the blog’s comment section. I’ll be connecting with you every other week from now on, so please do be sure to reach out if you need anything in between newsletters.

A Prosperous Writer has a Website (Making a Living as a Writer, Part 4)

This week I’m continuing this short series about What it takes to make a living as a writer. Check out my posts on networking and getting healthy as ways to make more money as a writer.
Tim Grahl has an amazing post on building an author website (and a fantastic new podcast, too), so I won’t try to do it better. I want to, instead, encourage you to go through his post step-by-step and create your own author website and give you a few strategic reasons why it’s so important to do so.
First, a prosperous writer treats their business like a business. And, just about every profitable business has a website. You have a real home, and you definitely need a virtual home — your website. Enough said, right?
Second, a prosperous author is legit — and your website proves it. Your bio tells who you are. Your books page allows people to read about (and perhaps purchase) your books … and anything else book-related you sell (workbooks? coaching? speaking? more?). Your website shares other places you can be stalked connect,

How to Navigate Amazon’s KDP & Other Digital eBook Retailers

When you’ve done something a few dozen times, it loses the ability to overwhelm or cause confusion. But the first time I do anything, the learning curve can sometimes be overwhelming. Especially those little details you don’t even know you don’t even know about!
As it turns out, some of you haven’t gotten your books started because you can’t figure out how to get it up for sale on Amazon. I do talk a little bit about this in You Must Write a Book , but I thought some additional information would be incredibly helpful (and take the intimidation factor out of the mix).
First, you’ll need an account. Here are the links for the three major online retailers:
Amazon’s KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing): kdp.amazon.com
Apple’s iBooks: apple.com/ibooks-author/
Kobo: kobo.com/writinglife
Next, you’ll need the following information for each platform:
Your entity name (S-Corp, LLC, Sole Proprietorship)
Entity address
EIN / Social
Bank account and routing information
Note: I highly recommend setting up a separate entity, or at least your business for your book(s) (as opposed to using your personal information/social security number).
Finally, you can set up your book! You’ll need all of the following information, and it’s a great idea to have everything handy before you begin.
For each book title: (items in blue are Amazon only)
Language
Book Title
Book Subtitle
Series information (Is your book part of a series? Which book is this on: first, second, third?)
Edition number (1, 2, 3, etc.)
Author — that’s you!
Contributors (additional authors, Foreword, editor, designer, etc.) Only the additional authors need to be included, but any are at your discretion.
Book description
Publishing rights (Assuming this is your original work, choose I own the copyright…)
Keywords (you can add up to seven)
Categories (you can choose two)
Available for Sale Now -or- Make Available for Pre-Order (can be available for pre-order up to 60 days in advance)
DRM (Digital Rights Management): Choose yes or no.
Upload your cover (front cover only). Details here.
ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Purchase yours through Bowker.com (https://www.myidentifiers.com), you’ll need one for each version of the book (ebook and paperback), and you’ll need a digital barcode for your paperback. Note: 1 ISBN is $125.00, 10 ISBNs is $275.00. Definitely worth it to buy a block of 10!)
Publisher. You, or your business entity, are the publisher (not Kindle, CreateSpace, Apple, or whatever).
KDP Select. The option to sell your books solely on Amazon exists (and there are some valid benefits for making this choice). It is a strategic decision. If you’d like some coaching on this topic, I can help.
Territory Rights. Worldwide or Individual Territories. I always choose Worldwide.
Royalty & Pricing. 70% or 35% (books between $2.99 and $9.99, all other prices require 35% royalty).
Enroll in Kindle Matchbook. Give customers who purchase your print book from Amazon the option to purchase your Kindle eBook for $2.99 or less.
Book Lending. Titles earning 70% royalties must allow for lending.
I will be expanding upon keywords and book description in future posts. Feel free to ask me anything via email or in the blog’s comment section.
Happy writing!

A Healthy Author Makes More Money (Making a Living as a Writer, Part 3)

This week I’m continuing this short series about What it takes to make a living as a writer. At the risk of hearing some pushback, I’m going to say a healthy writer makes more than an unhealthy writer.
And, it seems like 2016 was a year a lot of my author friends decided to get healthy. I know three people who lost a combined 121 lbs.!
A little-known fact about me is that I’m a sucker for a weight-loss transformation show. I’ve watched them all – The Biggest Loser, Extreme Weight Loss, and lately (no judgment please), Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian.
While the focus seems to be solely on weight loss, those who truly transform seem to experience the added bonus of self-esteem. They smiled more, felt better, and even took more risks. Feeling great about yourself is a natural by-product of getting stronger, healthier, more fit, and faster. Stay with me, there’s more…
This year I set a goal to lower my 3 mile run time from 36 minutes (12 minute miles) down to 21 minutes (7 minutes miles, a.k.a. smokin’!). I also set a goal to write several books in my upcoming fiction thriller series, at least a dozen non-fiction books, publish three books in The Miracle Morning series, and well, take more naps.
Seems like there might not be enough time to get all of those goals accomplished, you might be thinking. Trust me, the runs have necessitated the naps, they wear me out! I’ve dropped my time from 36:18 on Jan. 2 to my best time all month of 33:04 (on 1/26). I also increased my overall income even as I decreased my runs times and pant size.
There’s no other feeling like how I feel after a great run. The rest of my day tends to be amazing. I’m inspired, I write more words with less hesitation, and I feel more confident.
Why am I writing all of this? Because I know too many writers who think they have to focus solely on their writing “until they’ve made it” and can justify taking the time to focus on themselves. I submit to you the reverse is actually better for you — devote some time to yourself, and your writing (and your bank account) will bloom. The better you feel about yourself, the more inclined you’ll be to write.
I’m not pointing any fingers. In fact, I know when I point the finger as someone, I have at least three of my own fingers pointing back at me. But I wanted to help make the connection between fitness and finances, moving and money, running and writing!

You’re Going to LOVE Having a Book!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
What’s love got to do with it? “It” being your book?
When you have a book, your business is easier to love.
And by love, I mean hire, engage, pay …
One of my clients produced a book solely to increase his professional fees (not to create multiple streams of book income, as is the case for some including me). Although he invested in the quality production of his book and utilized my coaching services, he reports he was in the black after the first month … and sixteen months later, is bringing in triple the amount of business he was before he had a book.
If there’s any gift I hope you give yourself this Valentine’s Day, it’s the gift of a book with your name on the cover! So, have you started yet?
Huge thanks to everyone who took the time to share your progress and intended publish dates with me last week. If you haven’t shared your book goals with me, rest assured I want to know.
Next week, I’m starting a series about the technical side of publishing your book (just in case the details seem overwhelming). Be sure to leave your question in the comments or send me an email.
Happy writing!

The Myth of Having it All

Time flies when you’re having fun!
I can’t believe it’s already February! I was determined that 2017 was going to be the year I would maintain the enthusiasm and optimism with which I started the year. So far, so good. How’s it going for you?
But before I dive into my thoughts, I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for opening and reading this blog. I’d love to know how you discovered me and my work. Would you kindly take a minute and tell me, if we’ve never connected directly before (or even if we have, and you still want to tell me)?
Anyway, today I had some thoughts about “having it all.” I think we have been sold a bill of goods that we need to have a bunch of things in order to be happy. I’m such a slow learner I’ve climbed that mountain more than twice … accumulating all of the things and then realizing I had to care for them, insure them, get them cleaned, or worry about them … or all of the above.
A few years ago, my husband and I downsized and we’re getting ready (probably when our daughter graduates from high school next year … wait, what?!) to go mobile. As in, live on a bus and travel all around. Why share this with you? Well, I’ve worked with thousands of professionals over the years and the happiest ones were those that found a level of simplicity and joy. Those who were the most miserable were constantly worrying about something (not necessary someone).
I wanted to interject some positivity and encouragement into your days, especially since you’re taking the time to read this:
You don’t have to do it all. Trying to do it all just might drive you mad. You could spend your whole life in pursuit and miss the joy and happiness right at your fingertips. When was the last time you just didn’t do something and the world didn’t come to an end? Try just crossing something off of your “to do” list, and go get a massage instead. Or take a long lunch, or call someone you haven’t talked to in 25 years.
You don’t have to have it all. Just the things you want. You actually don’t own things, they own you. So make sure that every single thing you own brings you this much joy and happiness.
You don’t have to be it all. This is your life, and the only person you truly have to make happy is you. Keep in mind, the happier you are, the happier those around you will be.
Remember this: whoever told you it was imperative for you to have, do, and be it all didn’t know what they were talking about.
