The cost of this coin might just be too high… When Gabriela finds a mysterious coin in the French Riviera, she is thrust into a struggle between governments, terrorists, and madmen, all seeking vital information she doesn’t know she has. Richard, the intelligence officer assigned to protect her, has all he can do to keep her safe–and keep the stirrings of his heart from endangering them both.

Excerpt:

Richard turned and went up the steps two at a time, locked the French doors, and hurried into the dining room.  He stopped on the threshold.  Gabriela was crying softly into her hands, her elbows resting on the dining room table, her shoulders shaking from her weeping.

He cursed under his breath, aware of what he was about to do, knowing he shouldn’t, but nonetheless did.  He walked over, lifted her, and wrapped her in his arms.  “Shh,” he crooned, stroking her hair as she wept silently into his shoulder.  He wanted her close, wanted to soothe her pain.  “Don’t cry.  Everything will be all right.  You’ll see.”

“I feel like I’m in the middle of a damn Greek tragedy.”

Richard, feeling awkward and clumsy in his newfound gentleness, unhappily listened to her hushed sobs.  “Gabriela, please don’t.  I hate to see you cry.”

That made her cry harder.

His arms tightened around her.  If she only knew how her tears affected him, how she affected him.  He ached, but not from holding her.

She lifted her face, valiantly attempting to control her emotions.  “I’m okay,” she sniffed.  A tear overflowed, cruising slowly over her damp cheek.  Richard softly brushed it away with his thumb.  “I can’t seem to stop making a stupid fool of myself lately,” she told him in a broken voice.  “I wonder what the hell is going to happen next.”

“Nothing.  Not while I’m around.”

“That’s what worries me.  I’ve never had to deal with such emotions before, so much pent-up violence.  It scares me.  You scare me.”

He was taken aback.  “I wouldn’t harm you for the world.”

“But in order to protect me, you’d harm others.  I saw it in your eyes.”  Her own became troubled.  “You are like a simmering volcano, Richard.  If you ever explode, you’ll obliterate everything obstructing your path.  I don’t want to be devoured by it, and I know it will be inevitable if I’m by your side.  That frightens me.”

“Scared of the fire . . . or of wanting to be devoured?”

Gabriela softly disengaged herself from his hold and turned her back on him.  She had begun to shake in his arms and it certainly wasn’t from cold.  How could she love one man and be attracted to another, at the dangerous edge of falling in love with him?  She considered herself a mature woman, not worldly, but honest and forthright.  In all her years of marriage she had never, ever, let a man come near her, had never responded to any of the advances she had received, refusing some carefully, others rudely, but always uninterested in any man but her husband.

What was happening to her?  She lacked nothing.  Her husband loved her.  She loved him.  She had found women who boasted of their casual affairs disgusting.  What was it about Richard that made her react to him?  She should be offended and outraged, not responding to him in passion.

“What scares me is your treatment of my friends,” she said, returning to safer ground.  “They’re not your personal punching bags.”

On her blog tour, she’s giving away a copy of her new book, if you leave a comment.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Summer, Present Day, Frisco, Colorado

Eleanor Baines ran down the deserted street. Pain throbbed in her arm, and blood dripped down her sleeve. She couldn’t believe the damn vampire killer had nicked her with a blade that was coated with hallowed mud. Usually the assholes sported a tattoo of a dagger stabbing an opened-mouthed skull with long incisors, but this kid didn’t have one. Luckily, she had built a resistance over the years to hallowed mud, but it wasn’t enough. Her muscles were weakening, and her vision was becoming blurry.

Donna pass out.

She glanced over her shoulder. The chubby killer hurried after her and would soon overtake her. He’d surprised her at the post office when she went to open her safe deposit box. Her fault. She hadn’t thought he’d be threat—he wasn’t even sixteen. How had he known she would be there at midnight? She had even used a pseudonym.

Her heart beat hard, and each time, terror thumped between her temples. Nausea gripped her stomach. Damn! The poison was working swiftly, breaking down organs and closing up veins. Only human blood would stop the shutdown of her system. Her mountain home was a mile away, and she’d never make it in time to drink the harvested blood in her refrigerator.

She glanced over her shoulder to find the damn killer gaining on her. Her legs were so heavy it felt like she was trudging through mud. She turned, but slammed into a brick wall and stumbled. Strong arms gripped her, stopping her from her falling down.

“Hey, are you all right?”

Her rescuer lifted her to her feet. She stared into the darkest, midnight-blue eyes she’d ever seen.

A shirtless man held her arms. He had chiseled abs, and long brown hair that flared over his broad shoulders. God, he smelled good. Pine with a hint of lemon and sage. She panted. “Help…me.”

“Get away from her,” her pursuer said. “She’s a vampire.”

The man shoved her behind him. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I know it sounds crazy,” her enemy said. “But it’s the truth. She’s going to rip your throat out.”

Please. She hadn’t ripped anyone’s throat out except for Emmet Carver’s. This young killer had watched too many vampire horror flicks. Eleanor’s legs wobbled, but she drew on her strength. If she fainted, she’d fall into the death sleep with hallowed mud pumping through her system—then she’d never wake.

M.L. Guida’s Haunts: Creswell Mansion

Creswell Mansion

Creswell Mansion

Cresswell Mansion

Creswell Mansion

Several weeks ago, I went on a ghost tour and we stopped at the Creswell Mansion. The Creswell Mansion is a Victorian sandstone mansion built in 1889. It is a mixture of Romanesque and Queen Anne. It’s a beautiful mansion, but supposedly a ghost lives in the building. It’s home to a law firm now. People often feel like they are being watched.

Our tour guide said during one of her tours. People yelled that a window shade was opening and a green ghostly figure looked out. She said to take pictures, because you never know what you might see. I did. But I didn’t record a ghost. Below is the picture where the ghost looked out of onto the tour. Anyone have any experiences there?

The little window is where the ghost looked out.

M.L. Guida's News: Night Owl Reviews

MLG_Punishment

I am so excited. Night Owl Reviews reviewed my book, Punishment, Angels of Death, and it was a top pick.

reviewertoppick2

This book was fantastic, it left off right where Betrayal, the first book in the Angels of Death series ended. I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the writing and the story itself. It captivated and held my attention from the start to the finish. There was never a dull moment in this book. The story itself is part of the adrenaline rush that comes from a well written plot, and this one was truly fascinating. It is not the standard, here are the characters, and here is the plot. As this story unfolds you get a feel for what might be around the corner but never enough that made it predictable. If anything, once one question was answered there were tons more unanswered.

Blade is a fallen Angel of Death and is one sexy and smoking hot male. He was once seeking revenge but now that he has met the beautiful and intriguing Abigail, he is trying to atone for his mistakes. The chemistry and the erotic sex scenes in this book are smoking hot, to the point of combustible. I love the way they meet and the instant chemistry between them. Blade has to come to grips with his sins from his past and when that past intertwines with Abigail he finds that he needs her now more than anything else. Without giving away any spoilers I will say that these two characters were made for each other.

I love getting to read about the secondary characters from past books and I love how the Angels and other heavenly beings and characters are brought to life. There are times that you want to laugh at the humor inserted into the story and then times when you just want to kick some angel ass for the way they think.

I highly recommend this read to those who love a great paranormal romance with some really kick ass heroes and villains. M.L. Guida is a gifted story teller. This book was sexy and filled with lots of action and smoking hot erotic writing, all while pulling you into her own world of Angels and Demons. I recommend reading the first book in the series before reading this one. You definitely need the back story to truly be able to appreciate this book. Happy Reading!

My editor told me she read this a couple of times, she loved it so much. Blade is one of my favorite characters. He’s your ultimate bad boy turned good.

Happy Halloween! Or should I say Happy Holloween! I’m excited to announce that readers can win prizes through www.hopswithheart.blogspot.com. I’m personally will be giving away an ebook copy of my new release, Punishment, Angels of Death, to anyone who signs up for my newsletter.

MLG_PunishmentExcerpt:

A gust of wind swirled around Blade, churning faster and faster. Dirt and leaves sprayed into his face, stinging his eyes, slapping his cheeks, slipping into his mouth. He gagged and raised his arm, burying his face in the crook of his elbow. Cold penetrated his skin and frosted his bones into brittle icicles. He bent his legs and jumped into the air to fly, but his wings failed to open. Instead of falling, the wind lifted him, spinning him around and around and around, his arms and legs flailing, his stomach churning.

“Balthazar,” he screamed, “Help me.”

But the demon Balthazar refused to answer. Only the wind answered, taunting and hissing his name.

Blade slammed onto the hard ground and rolled and rolled until he banged into something hard. The air was knocked out of him, and pain stabbed his shoulder. He groaned and put his hand on his forehead. Pine branches blew over his head. Between the branches and clouds, the moon played peek-a-boo. He spat out dirt and leaves and inhaled, filling his lungs with sweet mountain air. Where the devil had the Archangel Raphael sent him?

He shook his head and pushed himself off the ground into a sitting position. Pine needles and twigs stuck through his long-sleeved tee-shirt, pricking and scratching his skin.

He brushed the debris. “Why the hell am I in pain? I’m a bloody demon, a fallen angel.”

Raphael shimmered in front of him, his white wings spread out wide, and stared at him with those large silver eyes that always made him squirm. He cocked his eyebrow. “Balthazar? Really, Blade?”

Blade gritted his teeth. “You didn’t think I’d ask for you.”

The full moon rose high into a cloudless sky littered with a million stars. A cool breeze blew the tall pine and aspen trees. He shivered. “Where the hell am I?”

“Frisco, Colorado.”

“Why am I here?”

Raphael shrugged. “For your penance.”

Blade put his hand down and pushed himself up. “My what?” He grimaced. His body ached, but his right shoulder screamed with agony.

“You heard me. Peddling the Hell drug, Xanadu, is a serious offense. You killed innocent people to satisfy your lust for revenge.”

Blade clenched his fists. “If you would have healed Samantha, I wouldn’t have fallen.”

Raphael shook his head; blond strands fell from his loose queue. “I keep telling you, she wasn’t your angel-mate. You never spoke the binding words.”

“I would have if Samantha hadn’t been murdered.”

“Samantha’s death was not Heather’s fault. Heather couldn’t control her client. The man was an addict and refused to accept Heather’s treatment.”

Bitterness swirled in Blade’s mouth. “The bitch shouldn’t have released someone from her rehab center unless he was fully cured.”

Raphael’s eyes glowed. “There’s…somebody else for you.”

Book Description:

They walked through the shadows individually. Will they emerge into the light together?

Leading a vagabond life as a curator for a traveling photography exhibit translates to a lot of bad days for Rikki Salerno. But her trouble doubles when a careless high school student shoves her into a marsh. Being rescued by teacher Sam Kerrigan should have made things better, but Rikki’s inability to confess her true identity casts a shadow over their budding affair.

When Sam refuses an overly aggressive parent’s marriage proposal, she’s determined to ruin him. Not only does she doctor photos to make it look like Sam’s behaved inappropriately in front of students, she hacks the foundation website to reveal Rikki’s true identity. Faster than the blink of a shutter, Rikki’s focus changes from pursuing her full-color future to the black and white necessity of clearing Sam’s name.

Excerpt:

Rikki quietly set down the coffee cups onto the dresser and snatched up her camera. She liked the funny, considerate, responsible Sam, who interacted so well with the teens he taught. She loved the sexy, demanding, but giving partner he turned into behind closed doors. The sight of him, lying in her bed, completely relaxed, demanded she catch the image on film. It was a picture she could pull out again and again while she traveled, whenever she needed a reminder of this man she was in danger of losing her heart to.

Adjusting the F-stop for the natural lighting, she clicked off several shots, changing the angle of the camera and her position in the room. Zooming in on his face, she fired the shutter three times before she realized his lips had curved up in a decadent smile.

“I hear a camera whirring,” he said, his voice rough from sleep. Or the lack of it. They’d gotten very little last night, putting a big dent in the supply of condoms Rikki had picked up yesterday afternoon.

The sheet fell partially away when he lowered his arm and shifted to his side, coming to rest on his hip. The fire in his eyes heated her where she stood at the foot of the bed. There were those dimples again, and the muscular cuts on his sides. She needed to research spontaneous combustion, because she was pretty sure that’s what was happening right now.

“But I also smell coffee, which might make me forgive you for taking pictures while I was asleep.” Grabbing the sheet, he stared her down, as if daring her to snap more photos.

Smiling impishly, she put the camera on the dresser and picked up the cups. Walking over to the bed, she said, “Sorry, the artist in me had to capture the perfection. Christ, Sam, even your butt cheeks have dimples.”

He chuckled, scooting up in the bed until he reclined against the headboard, the sheet draped modestly across his lap. “There’s something you don’t hear in everyday conversation.” Accepting a cup from her, he grinned, humor and sunlight warming his eyes.

Settling cross-legged on the bed next to him, Rikki sipped her coffee, savoring the strong, crisp taste, the delicious smell of roasted hazelnuts wafting in her face. She smiled at him over the rim. “Did you want to run this morning?”

“What time is it?” He leaned forward to look at the old-style analog alarm clock on the nightstand. He scrubbed a hand over his mouth, stifling a yawn. “Is that thing right? Is it really eight already? I’m sorry, I can’t. I’m supposed to meet Avery in two hours to start work on the exhibit panels.”

“Oh,” she said, unable to hide the disappointment in her tone.

Setting his cup aside, he plucked hers out of her hand and put it down, too. He framed her face, then pressed a light, soft kiss on her lips. The simple gesture escalated until she was on his lap, wrapped in his arms, breathless and straining to get closer.

Ending the kiss much too soon, Sam lowered his hands to her hips, smiling ruefully at her. “Why don’t we go out? I’m meeting my brother and his fiancée at Red’s for drinks tonight. Maybe my parents, too. If Mom can drag Dad out.”

“I don’t want to intrude.”

“Rikki, it would only be an intrusion if I didn’t invite you. But I did, so…” He lifted a hand, as if to say, you know you wanna.

His eyes shone with hope, his grin charmingly lopsided. Her heart tilted in her chest. “Who could resist that look? If you want me to meet you there, you better give me details.”

“How about if we make this a real date? Not a field trip or a business meeting. Just a man and his smoking hot girlfriend going out to meet some friends.”

“Girlfriend?”

Smoking hot girlfriend.”

Oh, jeez. A date—where his parents might show up. Good Lord! Was she ready for that? Maybe. “What time will you be here?”

About the Author:

Gemma’s favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a ’round tuit,’ and a slip of paper from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; some day she’d write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss, even the rejections addressed to ‘Dear Author’ were gratifying.

After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy. Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue an avocation as a romance author.

M.L. Guida’s News: Christmas Came Early

I love rock stars! Yummy.

I love rock stars! Yummy.

I just released my new Christmas novella, A Vampire’s Fallen Christmas Star.  I love rock stars and what could be better than rock stars and vampires?

I have to admit I’m a throw back girl to the 1980’s and 1990’s. I grew up with Van Halen, Bon Jon Jovi, Rolling Stones, and Def Leppard. But my favorite was Eddie Van Halen.  He turned all my buttons with his long, black hair, bad boy smile, and mischievous eyes. I hate to admit this, but I had a poster of him over my bed. I still remember it. He was playing with his guitar, had on red overalls, and a cigarette dangling from his mouth. Hot, hot, hot.

My hero, Jayden, isn’t as famous as Eddie. He’s part of a local mountain band, but he’s definitely a heart throb and a bad boy. He blames himself for his twin brother’s death and he’s definitely not in the Christmas spirit. His guilt pushes him to go up to a lake to make peace with his brother, but he slips and impales himself on a jagged tree. He’s dying.

But when a beautiful vampire gives him the choice to die or an immortal life, he choses life. Jayden finds everything he holds true is false. His best friend is a vampire killer, and now, he wants Jayden’s head on a platter. He is swept up in a world of vampires and vampire killers. To survive, he must trust Eleanor and he finds she’s both vulnerable and an accomplished fighter—only together can they defeat their enemies.

There will be a third book in this series, and it will be about Jayden’s drummer. The first book is A Vampire’s Christmas Wish.

AVampiresChristmasWishJanus isn’t a rock star, but he’s the vampire who sets the series in motion. A Vampire’s Christmas Wish isn’t set in Frisco, Colorado. It’s set in Hawaii. But the heroine is from Colorado.

Halloween is around the corner. I love watching all the horror movies. One of my new favorites is the Conjuring. Yes, it’s a horror movie, but there’s a love story embedded in it between Ed and Lorraine Warren. Their belief in each other is what helps them defeat the darkness. Remember Poltergeist? Stephen and Diane Freely have that same bond. Romance is what makes those movies.

Anyway, I wanted to wish you all a scary and safe Halloween!

She has a new release, The Shucker’s Booktique.

J.C. McKenzie's new book

J.C. McKenzie’s new book

MISSING AUNT? MYSTERIOUS STRANGER? STRANGE TOWN? WILLA’S GOT PROBLEMS BIGGER THAN A BARCODE

Blurb:

After her fiancé dumps her and her beloved Aunt Jenny goes missing, Willa Eklund travels to Lobster Cove with a broken heart to search for Jenny while running her bookstore. When a mysterious man visits the Shucker’s Booktique on a stormy night drenched in rain and covered in mud, Willa’s heart melts under his stormy gaze. She wants Lon and the answers he may have, but he also has a secret. Can Willa trust him?

Lon Devlin is a Tempest, a water sprite who can only take a human form during stormy nights. He rides the waves, lives by the tides, and nothing can hold him down, not even a beautiful woman. When he visits his mortal friend, he discovers she’s missing and her intriguing niece has taken her place. He wants Willa, but he also wants answers. What happened to Jenny?

Excerpt:

Thump! Thump! Thump!

No! She gasped. It couldn’t be. The banging on the front door of the booktique had to be a figment of her imagination. She couldn’t will Lon into existence. Why would he come back? Especially if he was involved. Unless…cold ice prickled up her spine…unless he needed to eliminate her to take care of loose ends.

No. Crazy thoughts, Willa. He could’ve taken care of her the night before. No, her heart hammered against her chest for a different reason. But it didn’t matter. The knocking on the door wouldn’t, couldn’t be him.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Could it? She clutched her hot mug in both hands and turned toward the doorway leading to the bookstore. From the kitchen in the back room, she had a clear view through the store to the front door, but not who stood on the other side.

“Willa!” Lon growled. “Wake up and let me in!”

Willa gasped and almost dropped her cup. The tea sloshed around and some spilled over her hands. It burned, but she didn’t move. She couldn’t breathe. Somehow the air got trapped inside her throat. Why was he here? What did he want?

Oh God, let it be me!

Sounds like a great book, J.C.!

M.L. Guida's News: Fantastic Weekend at Margie Lawson's

Top right: Julie Glover, Kim Handysides (my roomie!), Margie Lawson, Jenny Hansen, me, Tiffany Lawson (The Naked Editor), and T.K. Knight

Top right: Julie Glover, Kim Handysides (my roomie!), Margie Lawson, Jenny Hansen, me, Tiffany Lawson (The Naked Editor), and T.K. Knight

I met some amazing women at Margie Lawson’s—Julie Glover, Kim Handysides, Jenny Hansen and T.K. Knight. And of course, Margie’s daughter, Tiffany, who is a great editor. We worked hard this weekend—critiquing, writing, acting.

Yes, I played one of Jenny Hansen’s character’s Woody. I loved Woody—a sexually frustrated man. Jenny is an amazing author,  and she received a phone call while we were working. She is a finalist in the Women’s Fiction Contest, Rising Star Contest! Congrats, Jen.

Margie’s husband, Tom, is an amazing cook. He cooked us wonderful meals, including poached pears. We love Tom.

And who could forget Calypso, Margie’s dachshund. She was a sweetie.

What did I learn? I learned about dialogue cues, edits, and rhetorical devices. I plan to apply these to my manuscripts, and in another year like Julie Glover (another amazing author), I will attend another Immersion Class.

I wish all of the Wanton Caterpillars great success!
