In late 2017 Jeff accepted a temporary appointment to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, on leave from Iowa's widely acclaimed statewide STEM education program he has directed on behalf of the governor since 2011. An award-winning college professor, scholar, and former high school science teacher, Jeff frequently writes for, speaks to, and strategizes with groups aspiring to unleash the transformative power of STEM education at the national, state, and local levels. Jeff resides in Cedar Falls, Iowa with life partner of thirty-four years Mary and their collie-pointer mix, Rico. They're parents of David of Austin, TX., and Andrew of St. Paul, MN. who is raising their new grandbaby Camden alongside spouse Madison. A three-time graduate of the University of Iowa, Jeff earned a bachelors, masters, and a doctorate in Science Education, and is now on a nine-years-and-counting leave of absence from a faculty position in the department of biology at the University of Northern Iowa. Jeff is an amateur sports enthusiast - tennis, bicycling, skiing, bowling, boating - as well as a hobbyist science writer, mechanic and home improver. It took him just twelve months to fulfill a promise to lead the production of America's Strategy for STEM Education, a nonpartisan five-year plan to guide federal agencies and to rally the nation around STEM education.
