Writing is good. There are some really good parts. But, I felt nothing. I got nothing from these stories. After a couple of days. I don't remember anything.

One day after finishing this book, my anger against it increased. My feeling was upgraded from "dislike" to "detest". Therefore, 1 star instead of 2.

There are really good parts and I appreciate the fact Tokarczuk makes me think. But, I often felt her monologue judgmental and arrogant. Some factual errors also bothered me.

I couldn't get into it in the beginning. I had no idea what was going on until all the players were introduced and the dots were getting connected. I enjoyed the last 1/3 very much, and I am glad I didn't give up on it.

“It's not about the cards you're dealt, but how you play the hand.”
Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

“I’ve come to think that flourishing consists of putting yourself in situations in which you lose self-consciousness and become fused with other people, experiences, or tasks. It happens sometimes when you are lost in a hard challenge, or when an artist or a craftsman becomes one with the brush or the tool. It happens sometimes while you’re playing sports, or listening to music or lost in a story, or to some people when they feel enveloped by God’s love. And it happens most when we connect with other people. I’ve come to think that happiness isn’t really produced by conscious accomplishments. Happiness is a measure of how thickly the unconscious parts of our minds are intertwined with other people and with activities. Happiness is determined by how much information and affection flows through us covertly every day and year.”
David Brooks

George Eliot
“It is one of the secrets in that change of mental poise which has been fitly named conversion, that to many among us neither heaven nor earth has any revelation till some personality touches theirs with a peculiar influence, subduing them into receptiveness..”
George Eliot, Daniel Deronda
