Jack Thompson is an international bestselling author finding voices in many genres. In addition to his popular Raja Williams mystery series, Jack writes science fiction, political thrillers, paranormal romance, children's stories and fairy tales.

According to Jack, whether reading or writing, what makes a story great is how well it communicates to the reader. Whether presenting him with a hero he wishes he could be or a villain he chooses to hate, the characters must relate to the reader on a personal level. A reader will leave a good story in an improved condition. He may have learned something new about the world or himself, or simply been well entertained. That's why Jack writes.

The old man blinked several times trying to get his eyes to work. With some effort he raised himself onto his elbows, cleared his throat, and... Read more of this blog post »

Robert A. Heinlein
“Heinlein's Rules for Writers

Rule One: You Must Write
Rule Two: Finish What Your Start
Rule Three: You Must Refrain From Rewriting, Except to Editorial Order
Rule Four: You Must Put Your Story on the Market
Rule Five: You Must Keep it on the Market until it has Sold”

Elmore Leonard
“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing

1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
Elmore Leonard

Roald Dahl
“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
Roald Dahl

Galaxy Press Writers of the Future Volume 34 The Best New Sci Fi and Fantasy Short Stories of the Year by L. Ron Hubbard
Hi Jack,
At the beginning of March you were selected as a winner in the Writers of the Future volume 34 giveaway. The book released April 10. The book provides a professional introduction to 12 writer and 12 illustrators to the world of publishing. It also includes short stories from Brandon Sanderson (a contest finalist and now Contest judge), Jody Lynn Nye (Contest judge) and L. Ron Hubbard (Contest founder). Essays on the business of writing and illustration are also included.
As you know, book reviews play a vital role in the growth of book awareness in general. Thus, I am writing in the hopes you will be able to provide an honest review in the near future amidst your otherwise crazy schedule.
Thank you very much.
John Goodwin
