Cuban lawyer, teacher, author, politician and onetime Judge of the Permanent Court of International Justice at the Hague (1922–1944).

Sanchez de Bustamante graduated from the Colegio de Belen and studied law in Madrid and Havana. He served in the Cuban Senate from 1902-1918. In 1926, he taught at the University of Miami.

He was a Cuban authority on international law and author of the Bustamante Code. A delegate to the Paris Peace Conference (1919), he was later Justice of the Hague Tribunal (Permanent Court of Arbitration). He was also president of the Pan-American Congress (1928), which ratified his monumental code of private international law, coordinating legislation applying to the international security of person and property.
