Fool
“Make me laugh!”
The smaller felt the fire growing in his bones. Reaching behind the King’s ear, he produced a penny. He smiled, weakly.
“Are you meant to be a magician?” the King raged.
The fire extended down his arms, into his fingertips. “I am, your grace.” His eyes burst into flame, as did he.

Behind the Eyes
The man closed his eyes and saw it play again. The splattering of blood on a wall; the glint of a knife pulled from a body; the stagger, the drop to the knees, the heavy sound of a skull on concrete.
The knife suddenly felt heavy in his hand. He shed the weight, and escaped.

The Phoenix
Running through the village streets the stench of burning bodies and huts forced her to keep moving. She knew the prophecy was real. A fiery maiden would end the terror in a ball of fire.
The dragon hovered over the ritual tower and Phoenix, accepted her fate; jumping into the beast’s mouth, consuming its flaming heart.

Dreamer
“Where were you?”
“When?” She looked puzzled.
“The universal question… when Kennedy died?’” He smiled.
“Who?”
“John F., the American President.” Jesus!
“When was that?”
“1963, One of history’s rememberable moments.”
“Mmmm; as I wasn’t born until 1982, I think I missed it. “ Sharp.
Another fantasy dies.

Kissed in the Moonlight
“Jordan?” He muttered.
The moonlight illuminated us. He walked over to me and clutched my hand.
“I love you,” he whispered.
He held me close, then he slowly leaned in and paused; his breath was hot on my lips. I held my breath.
Then, he kissed me softly and I couldn’t help but to smile.

A Faerie Tale
“Are you sure?”
She nodded. “This is where I belong.”
“So let it be.” He sprinkled the golden dust into the air; it fell on her softly, shimmering upon her skin. Her ears lengthened to a fine point; delicate wings sprouted behind her back. Her eyes sparkled with delight.
“Welcome. Now you’re one of us.”

True Face
“Give it to me!” she hissed.
He trembled. “B-but, it’s for…for the…”
“Tooth Fairy?” Her eyes flashed in fury. “Who the hell do you think I am?”
His eyes widened in shock. “You?”
She bared her teeth, grotesque, jagged, misshapen. She snatched the tooth from his shaking fingers.
“No one ever said I was pretty.”

Contrast: Empty or Filled
I walked into an empty church and felt both lonely and afraid. The colored windows were causing chilling shadows.
On Sunday I walked into the same church filled with worshipers. The windows, with their many colors, looked beautiful. Saturday I had the desire to run, but today the desire was to join and worship.

Careful What You Wish For
I’ve heard of wishes going wrong, but I thought I’d be safe wishing to be a mermaid, like the ones portrayed sitting on the rocks.
But I forgot to specify I wanted to be able to breathe underwater.
Now I can’t walk on land, and can’t search underwater. Can anyone help me find another lamp?

My Foreign Legion Tale
Solitary confinement in Djibouti.
“Sit!”
I sank into the chair.
Restraints snapped into place.
“Tell me about the guard?”
I licked my lips. “Delicious. I’m usually fussy.”
The psychologist snorted.
“Mon Dieu! YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?” She sounded upset.
“No, Françoise. Night time… bad dreams. People walking in here.”
I laughed. “Always saying they’re dead.
