The Present
Drawn to the box wrapped in shiny red paper, he picks it up and gives it a testing shake.
He has a normal five year old’s curiosity, and unwillingness to wait.
“Can I open just one?”
“Not until Christmas morning,” his mother reminds him, smiling as he reluctantly sets the present back under the tree.
Deborah Lean.

I’ve Got a Secret
He didn’t know. She’d kept her suspicions to herself, not wanting to see the disappointment on his face, yet again.
Her hand rested on her belly, a mother’s inherent gesture of protection, as she basked in the secret knowledge that she was pregnant.
Smiling, she walked over to her husband and whispered in his ear.
Deborah Lean.

Their Biggest Secret
One day, a satanist came to himself. But… nobody was there.
“Sorry,” said the satanist, “I’ll come next time”.
With that, he departed.

Some Secrets Are Better Left, Well, Secret
Harold zipped up his wife’s floral dress, donned her red wig and black pumps. Sitting at a mirrored vanity, he applied rouge and mascara.
He plugged in an old Hoover upright and danced happily, vacuuming to Glen Miller’s ‘In The Mood’, unaware the wife’s bridge night was cut short and was on her way home.
Michael Coady.

Christmas Confidential
“Mom’s in the shower. Let’s go look,” said Mikey.
“We’re not supposed to look,” warned little Timmy.
“Who says?”
“Santa.”
“You’re such a baby.”
Mikey reported that they’d gotten everything they’d asked for—and more.
“It’s all there.”
“Not anymore,” sniffled Timmy, “you’ve ruined it.”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Look again.”
This time the closet was empty.

Quest
Slayer’s sword splits the night, lightning sharp, severing the troll’s head. Other monsters flee the blaze, bloodied, dying, howling in terror.
Silk hair swirling, blade singing, Slayer spins. He strikes, lean, beautiful, emerald eyes flashing, screaming, “I shall know my secret, beast!”
Trolls cower, break before him. “Alas, revealed,” one wails. “You are the monster.”

Secret Weapon
On Monday, I woke in order to go to work
on Tuesday, but
on Wednesday, I learnt that it would rain
on Thursday, therefore
on Friday, I thought, “Why should I go to work
on Saturday,
if Sunday is a day-off?”

The Sweetest Secret
“You look happy,” Heather said to her sister.
Liz took a bite of stuffing to avoid replying.
She smiled thinking about the secret she would share tonight with her man seated across the table.
This news would dazzle him and if all went well they would bring another person to this festive table next year.
A. Partridge.

My Secret is that I’m Winged
The red tulip in his buttonhole, his kiss on my hand. Mere courtesy. Alas. Futile was my quiet word. He left, and my mind got clear and empty again.
“You don’t love me! Not wishing to cast a glance! O how beautiful you damned! And I can’t fly again, although… I’m winged from my childhood.”

No Price Too High
She slammed the lid shut and then twisted the lock.
“What you gon’ do now?” he asked her.
“Save it for my grandbaby.” She caressed the lid, but her eyes were hard, her smile grim. “He gon’ ask me one day, what dat freedom cost. He gonna ask, and when he do, I’ll show him.”
