The Passage

I read The Passage a few months ago, but I didn't have this blog then. Although I did like The Passage, I felt I could have liked it much more. Partly that is because I was not expecting a 250 page prologue. Nor was I expecting the time jump in the story after that prologue [...]

John Carter (of Mars) Trailer

The trailer for the John Carter movie is out.  I was a little trepidatious when I heard a movie was being made from Edger Rice Burroughs Barsoom series, but this trailer actually makes the movie look pretty fun and, oddly, serious. It's not often you get a trailer that makes a film like this [...]

The Hunger Games

I finished Susanne Collin's Hunger Games this weekend. I know, I'm a little behind in my reading. It seems everyone has read it. Especially now that it is being made into a film. I liked it a lot. Not as much as I wanted to, but quite a bit. The choice to write the story [...]

Doctor Who and Torchwood

I don't know who's "genius" idea it was to break up this year's Dr. Who season into two parts, with six epodes at the start of summer and the rest in the Autumn, but I don't see the logic. Not only am I deprived of fun summer sci-fi entertainment, but the BBC will have to [...]

Fassbinder's World on a Wire

Janus Films is rereleasing Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire in a tour of art house movie theaters for the next several months. If you are lucky it is playing near you sometime soon. I've never seen the film, but the description and the trailer make it look fascinating. Far, far ahead of it's [...]

Final Space Shuttle Landing

A sad day. The Space Shuttle program made it's final landing today. 135 missions over 30 years. When I was a kid I dreamed of one day riding on the Space Shuttle. I can't imagine kids today dreaming of riding a Russian Soyuz capsule to space. But they may dream of commercial space exploration. That [...]

Robert McCall

I came across this the home site for Robert McCall a few days ago.  What a treasure trove of great space art. I hadn't been aware, but he had passed away on Feb. 26 this year at age 90. He was one of the first three artists chosen by NASA in 1962 to create art [...]

The Popular Science Archives

I came across this site the other day. Popular Science Magazine has partnered with Google to create a searchable archive of all their back issues. When I was a kid, about 12 I guess, I discovered a large box of my grandfather's old Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines on the basement. I spent hours [...]
