Top 10 Favorite Sci-Fi Films
It’s been a busy month and one that didn’t allow much time for things like blogging. The last job I was on was very time consuming. I’m off now for a bit and hoping to get some serious writing done on The Sword of Unmaking (The Wizard of Time Book 2). I had hoped I would be able to have the novel ready for publication by the end of summer, however, I doubt it will be ready before the end of the year now. Between writing, revising, editing, proofing, and cover creation, there is too much to ac...

The Future of Space Exploration
I’ve been reading James Michner’s novel Space and it’s left me wondering about the future of human space exploration – at least during the remaining decades of my expected lifespan.
The novel is a fictional telling of the history of space flight from the V2 rockets at the end of WWII to the landings on the moon and the launch of the space shuttle. It follows a series of fictional characters, scientists, engineers, test pilots, and their wives through the decades as the United States space prog...

SETI and the Spiritual Quest
Some of the things I’ve been reading lately got me thinking about aliens and spirituality. I know that sounds weird. I’ll explain.
I read an article recently that suggest there may be far more planets around stars than previously assumed. More solid (i.e. earth-like) planets, no less. Another article announced the discovery of the farthest galaxy yet seen. Then there was the announcement that Jill Tarter, the former director of research for SETI (and apparently the inspiration for Ellie Arroww...

Why and How Do We Catagorize Fiction?
Two articles (LA Times and Time Magazine) I read recently got me to thinking about the difference between genre fiction and literary fiction – what those differences are, if it matters, how those distinction affect me as a writer, and how the idea of genre vs. literary changes when passing from one art form to another – say from novels to theater to TV and film? Reading those articles led to reading others, which led to more questions.
One of the interesting questions for me is how the idea ge...

Summer’s Cauldron (The Young Sorceres Guild – Book 2) Released
Been a while since I have had the time to blog regularly. I’ve been crazy busy at the day job and trying to finish everything to release Summer’s Cauldron, book 2 in the Young Sorcerers Guild series.
Summer’s Cauldron is finally done and for sale as an ebook at all the usual places: Amazon. Barnes and Noble. Smashwords. The print versions is still on hold while I figure out why the cover looks brown instead of orange.
Below is a short synopsis of the new book:
Returning to the town of Runewood a...

Another Earth & Dark September Rain
I’ve been busy with the final proofing and formatting of YSG #2 (Summer’s Cauldron) and the re-edit of The Celestial Blade, as well as working on Wizard of Time Book 2, so I haven’t had much time for blogging. I also haven’t felt inspired to blog about anything. However, I thought this might be interesting to share.
My wife and I watched Another Earth a few nights ago and while I really enjoyed the film it was an odd experience. Odd, because the house used in the film is the same house I shot...

The Day the Sky Fell
Busy life right now and not as much time for blogging as I would like. So, until I have some time for original content, I thought I would post a portion on something I wrote a while ago.
I watched Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia a few nights ago, and by some odd chance, Roland Emmerish’s 2012 was on TV the next day. It’s hard to think of two movies about the end of the world that could more different. The first half of Melancholia seemed like a pale imitation of Celebration, by vov Trier’s fellow...

The Separation of Science and the Divine
(Between my day job and trying to finish the final proof of Summer's Cauldron to get it published by the end of the month, this has become a very busy week. Because I'm also in the early stages of editing The Chrysalis Age (now called The Alchemy of World and Soul) for publication at the end of the year, I thought I would post an excerpt from it. I had wanted to take the time to link all the references mentioned, but it was going to take too much time. Maybe I'll update it later. Hopefully...

Writing Endings – Lost & Battlestar Galactica
Yesterday I was listening to a podcast about last weeks crop of sci-fi and fantasy by Darren Franich and Jeff Jensen and one of them mentioned in passing that George R.R. Martin hated the ending of Lost. I hadn't heard that before, so I did a little poking around and found an old io9 article about it by Charlie Jane Anders – who disagrees with Martin, but who also didn't like the ending of Lost.
Now, because I liked the ending of Lost, and Battlestar Galactica (which also receives mention in A...

Metamedia – Fused Media Storytelling
A month ago or so, I had dinner with a friend who is a serious digital media geek so I could pick his brain about an idea I've been toying with for the past decade that I call metamedia. Metamedia is simply my name for fused media storytelling. Back when I was on a yearlong corporate tour (1999-2000), I became very interested in the idea of trying to tell stories in both linear and non-linear ways through different integrated types of media.
At the time there was really no one doing what I...
