Rose Streif lives near downtown Indianapolis in a 90 year-old house with cats, books, a bearded guy, and vintage motorcycles. In the course of her life she has justified her writing habit by otherwise existing as a movie set extra, an Art History major, a liquor store clerk, a symphony ticket seller, a kitchen prep worker, a carriage driver, night security at an art museum, night security at a natural history museum, and an employee at a theatrical costume shop. Her work is informed by the Midwestern Gothic aesthetic and an interest in history, folklore, mythology, art, and literature. She has been known to read textbooks for fun, and in fact gets most of her ideas from reading non-fiction. While her use of profanity in everyday conversatio ...more

An appreciation, or an ability to see what was once there and what still remains, led to my creating the world of The Bearkeeper and Night Music (and the separate world of "Tonight at Noon.") That led to deeper study and attention to detail, and the living-in-two-worlds that comes with this sort of writing. When you choose to write about the place where you are, you immerse yourself in the environment more than you might during everyday life. I realized many things, such as how heavily forested Indianapolis is, or the fact that it often smells amazing in places because of the overgrowth of honeysuckle and privet. I love that I can still hear trains passing in the night.

It's something that I'm missing very much now that I'm working on Children of Stone, which takes place in Europe and North Africa, places that I've never been. Luckily this novel is more involved with character interaction than atmosphere, and a change of narrator can account for the change of mood.(less)

It’s short, sweet, and to the point, and might tell you some things regarding the three pounds of weirdness Icarry around in my skull.

Plus, he chose a flattering picture, and I can’t even trust most of my friends to do that.

A wonderful, no-nonsense, bare-bones (because--let's face it--that's all we have) biography of Shakespeare and an excellent overview of his times. Bryson at his best.
