Milkman by Anna Burns

SO GOOD. People should still be reading and talking about this novel in twenty years. I actually like a book where you have to raise your game slightly to meet its level - which you do, because there are admittedly a lot of long, dense, digressive pa ...more

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Ouch. This is kind of a breezy page-turner at the same time as being a pretty excruciating portrait of an affluent white woman, whose insecurities about her own privilege play out in her torturously well-meaning efforts to form a bond with her younge ...more

Rainbow Milk by Paul Mendez

I was blown away by Rainbow Milk. The writing is so good and the character at the centre of it, Jesse, is just so very thunderingly alive. There is a long section set on a mild, sunny Christmas Day in a London house-share, with two characters drinkin ...more

Against Memoir by Michelle Tea

I loved this. Michelle Tea is such a good writer. I don't think there's one disappointing piece in here. The memoir stuff is great - she's had an interesting life and is insightful about her experiences, and is also able to get out of her own way to ...more

The Overstory by Richard Powers

This one was an experience. It took me nearly two months to finish. It's not exactly a difficult read and Powers writes beautifully - it's just a very different kind of story, because it's honestly more about trees than people, and that requires a bi ...more

The Heartland by Nathan Filer

I loved this. It's quite gentle and open in tone rather than a furious indictment of anything in particular, but does a good job laying out how complex the diagnosis and treatment of so-called schizophrenia is. (Borrowing the 'so-called' from Filer, ...more

Why I Am a Pacifist by Tim Gee
Rate this book
Clear rating
A short book which makes a great introduction to pacifism and the ideas and arguments around it. Tim Gee has a nice, open and non-preachy tone and I thought dealt well with some of the sticking points people have with pacifism (e.g. do people who are ...more

The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

I think what I admired most about this was its darkness. There's real horror here, in the things the girls experience and the choices they're forced to make, and it builds to a compelling and unsettling climax that will stay with me for a long time.

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. This is the first verse novel that I've read and I'm a complete convert to the form. So much depth and emotion captured with such a light touch. I love the way the form allows for silences and lots of blank space on the page. I ...more

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I liked the boys, but the sleeper hit of this book for me was Agatha. I cheered every decision she made. Penny was cool too.

This was a fun and warm-hearted read for a rainy afternoon, and I will for sure be reading Wayward Son very soon.

“His older brother got expelled for selling pot at school.'
'That's - good to know.'
'He wasn't selling it to me.'
'Also good to know.'
'And if he was I wouldn't have been able to afford it.”
Catherine Barter, Troublemakers

“When I was little and Nick got hit by a car,' I said, 'Marie told me that he'd used up all our family's bad luck and we wouldn't have any more. Do you remember that?'
He is silent for a while. Then he says, 'She was lying.'
'Yeah. I'm working that out.”
Catherine Barter, Troublemakers

“I'm fifteen.'
She says, 'Ah,' like that explains everything. She says: 'When I was fifteen I ran away from home to try and meet Van Halen.”
