My Review:

This book was kind of a YA mix of Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’ and Michael Grant’s ‘Gone’ series. It had a lot of tension and creepiness and kept you hooked as to what was going on – no spoilers here, you’ll have to read it yourself.

I found the style easy to read and the plot unfolded nicely. I wasn’t instantly behind Tom as a character mind, perhaps a prologue of before the ‘incident; could have helped that along.

From a writer’s perspective, I’d have preferred first person narrative. In third, emotions are harder to convey and it seemed a little rigid to have a story so personal and limited to just one character and not have it told from that character’s point of view. I think the tension would have been hitched up a few notches as well, and would have also made the reader like Tom quicker. It’s hard to care about a character you don’t know very well.

The front cover really sums up the feel of the book and is likely to attract  wide range of readers – is a good read for both genders – so it really opens the audience options.

I’ve not read any other Andrew Klavan books, but after reading Nightmare City – I’d certainly look them up. Overall I’d give it 4 out 5 stars – not what I’m use to reading, but definitely worth the time.

One woman. Seven men. All bound by one man’s undying devotion.

Fundraiser Linden Hill has a knack for reading people. My Review:

I do love a good supernatural romance novel and this does tick all the boxes. Interesting plot and concept with main characters that are strong yet flawed.

Before I read it, I did a sneaky Goodreads check and found that most reviewers gave it 5 out 5 stars, so I thought ‘wow, I can’t wait to read this’.

I must admit, and this is just my personal opinion, I didn’t like the (near the start) scene with the two main characters when they almost do the nasty in the ladies’ toilets. Not for the writing, that was flawless, but more because it danced a very fine line between passion and rape. I get that there was tension and attraction going on, but Cyril certainly becomes an unattractive man in my eyes for his aggression in that opening gambit.  From then on, I really didn’t want them to get together, and that reader need is very integral to any romance – paranormal or not.

From a writer’s perspective it was was written exceptionally well and the plot flowed nicely and kept me reading. There were nice touches of humor in there too. However, if I hadn’t been reading the book for a tour, I’d have stopped after the toilet scene – which would have been a massive shame to have missed the rest.

The front cover is pretty, but ultimatly doesn’t say much about the book – the title is lovely though, and is unique and very apt to the book itself.

Overall I’d give Symphony of Light and Winter 4 out 5 stars. Impecabbly written paranormal romance.

Book Review: Waking Up Dead by Emma Shortt

EmmaShortt_WakingUpDead_coverSynopsis:

You know your life has hit rock bottom when you’re living off cooked rats and showering once every few months—if you’re lucky. But for Jackson Hart things are about to get a whole lot worse. When her best friend, Tye, disappears hunting for food, kick-ass Jackson’s ‘head south to safety’ plan looks like it’s dead before it’s even begun. But then she meets ex-mechanic Luke Granger, who takes her to his bunker, feeds her with non-rat based food, and offers her protection against the zombie hordes—not that she needs it. She knows how to use a machete and isn’t afraid to.

Jackson was tempted to stay in the city with her rescuer. Food, shampoo and the possibility of finally getting laid, what more could she ask for? But the flesh eaters are getting smarter and the bunker is compromised, so Jackson and Luke have no choice but to make the journey south.

Luke and Jackson team up to find other humans in a road-trip romance for the ages. They travel for thousands of miles with zombies shadowing their every move. They must utilize every resource at their disposal…and then some. On the way, they discover that even if flesh eating zombies are knocking down their door, there’s always time for sex and even love.

As a kid Emma wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe Captain Janeway. Because she didn’t really think her career choices through very well she ended up in an everyday geek job, crunching numbers and sighing over syntax. It seemed a long way from the stars, and in an effort to escape Emma decided to get serious about her other passion. Writing.

Several years later and Emma has yet to walk on the moon or sit in the Captain’s chair, but she is still writing. She scribbles stories in all sorts of genres, contemporary, paranormal, post-apocalyptic, historical, sci-fi…if she hasn’t tried it yet she will before long. The only common theme is the romance. A hopeless romantic, everything Emma writes has a love story in there somewhere.

She lives on the west coast of England with her very Greek husband and teenage kiddos. Apart from all things geek reading is her main hobby and she likes nothing better than getting home from a hard day at work and curling up with a book, though sometimes she gets home and writes one instead.

My Review:

Zombies are in at the moment, there’s been a horde of undead novels shuffling onto eReaders and book shelves of late – I know I’m guilty of adding to that too! So there really has to be a great story line and some decent characters to really set a zombie book above all the rest – fortunately Emma Shortt really does do that.

Each part is written from the POV of the male and female protagonist, so there’s a clever and clear build up of tension, as most chapters leaves you on a hook – a technique used by Agatha Christie in her who-dun-it novels, as it keeps you reading. That’s how a book becomes something you simply can’t put down.

The zombies in this one were also evolved, and kind of characters in themselves. It reminded me of the game ‘Left for Dead’ which had characters for some of their zombies – the witch’s wails use to scare the living bejeezes out of me.

The romance between Jackson and Luke is sweet and builds slowly too, unlike other paranormal romance novels that simply add in a lusty desire and suddenly they’re together.

From a writer’s perspective, the action was great and the plot moved steadily along. My only criticism was that I didn’t warm to Jackson very quickly. She kicks ass, which is great and necessary considering her predicament, but it takes a while for her to really shine for me and I would have preferred that to come across quicker. Luke comes across much better for me and to be honest this is one of the few books that I’ve read that I’d recommend to both women and men as it really would be a thrilling read for everyone.

The front cover does look a bit like a video game, which could be intentional or not. I must admit that it was more the story than the cover that attracted me to this one. If it hadn’t been part of a tour, I might have passed it by.

Overall I’d give Waking the Dead 4 out of 5 stars – if you love the Walking Dead and want a book that can match it, look no further.

My Review:

I loved this book! Fae are one of the few paranormal creatures I truly love reading about and when it’s a bad book about them, I’m appalled – but when its great – like Rogue’s Pawn, it’s truly magical.

The whole feel of a modern woman being flung into a Fae land was wonderful escapism and really reminded me of the CS Lewis books, obviously these ones are not suitable for kids though! The main character was strong and actually portrays a real modern gal as she should be, which can be rare in these types of romances.

From a writer’s perspective the author had the right amount of time spent on each part. One in particular to mention is the ‘training’ that the protagonist is given by two nasty, depraved Faes. It could have easily descended into an Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty S&M tale – or dare I say Fifty Shades, but it didn’t, it gave the reader enough to go on without being deliberately salacious.

I haven’t made my mind up about Rogue yet. I’m still reading the second book, Rogue’s Possession. He’s written beautifully as an alpha male, but I still don’t trust him – which just goes to show how much effort Jeffe went to in creating him as a character.

The front covers of both books are lovely and, to be honest, I couldn’t fault any part of it. I thoroughly enjoyed Rogue’s Pawn and am greedily awaiting a third book.

5 out 5 stars – if I could give it more, I would!

 My Review:

This was another great read from Sarah. Short and sweet (I actually read it all in one sitting) and different type of ghost story.

Ghost stories are actually one of my favourites. I remember when I was a little girl and my mum telling me all about my family history and the supernatural scrapes they got into with phantoms and even a demon bull in a Yorkshire field! So ghost stories are my ‘go to’ when writing and reading. That in mind, the bar is set pretty high for them and, Ghosts of Fall didn’t disappoint.

From a writer’s perspective the plot was interesting and the whole thing was very well written, however I did get a bit confused with the ending. I felt it was a little rushed and I didn’t quite get what had happened – perhaps more due to my short attention span that the book itself.

The front cover is lovely and actually relates to the book, which is a bonus as there are many titles out there that seem intent on having a pretty front cover regardless to its relation to the contents.

Overall I’d give Ghosts of Fall 4 out of 5 stars, a perfect ghostly romance with a bit of spice.

Interview with Karen Amanda Hooper

KarenHooperTell us about your publishing journey

It has been full of unexpected twists and turns, but it’s been a rewarding ride. I started out as many aspiring authors do, receiving countless rejections from agents and editors for multiple manuscripts. Then, back in 2010, Rhemalda Publishing was interested in Tangled Tides and offered me a deal. I loved Rhemalda, and was grateful and thrilled they helped me make my debut, but self-publishing was becoming an enticing path for many reasons so I self-published the first book in my other series, The Kindrily. I intended to stay with Rhemalda for many more sea creature tales, but sadly, a couple months ago, they announced they would be going out of business. My rights for Tangled Tides and Dangerous Depths reverted back to me, so my self-pub company, Starry Sky Publishing, is now producing all of my books. I actually enjoy the self-pub path because I’m a bit of a control freak and I enjoy being the boss.

What part of being a writer do you love most?

It’s a tie between the rush of writing a new story that won’t allow me to sleep at night, and the messages from fans.

Which part do you hate most?

I don’t hate any of it. I absolutely love being an author. However, really mean, negative reviews are tough to handle emotionally, but it’s all part of the job. I’m even fine with professional negative reviews because I usually learn something from them that helps me become a better writer.

If you could be a supernatural creature, what would you be and why? TangledTidesCover

Ooh, tough one. I’d probably want to be a mermaid. A Violet, of course, which means I’d exist according to the rules I created in my Sea Monster Memoirs series, which means I’d spend most of my time in Rathe. (Aka gorgeous, magical world.)

Vampires – scary monsters or romantic leads? Which do you prefer and why?

I’m not really big into vampires. I enjoyed the Twilight series (judge if you want but it was a darn good story–even with its flaws!) so I guess I see them as dangerously romantic. But other than that, I just haven’t been bitten by the vampire bug.

If you had a time machine, what era would you like to visit and why?

The 1950′s. I would love to wear poodle skirts and drink malts or milkshakes at the local diner while dancing to the jukebox music.

What life advice have you been given, that you wished someone had given you sooner?

“Be patient.” My dad has been trying to teach me that my whole life. I still haven’t mastered that virtue.

DangerousDepthsCover Who are your favourite authors and why?

Diana Gabaldon reignited my love for reading when I was a teenager so she’ll always be a favorite. I adore pretty much anything Gayle Forman writes. And a good friend of mine just released her debut NA novel, GONE WILD, but I’ve read a few of her other stories and I love all of them, so even though she’s a friend, Ever McCormick is also one of my fav authors.

What are you working on at the moment?

Book 3 of my Kindrily series, and I’ll also be starting Sacred Seas (book 3 of the Sea Monster Memoirs) soon. Plus, I’m slowly but surely co-writing a book with a teen writer. It might takes us a couple years, but it’s fun working on a new YA story with an actual teenager.

Book Review: Daughter of Isis by Kelsey Ketch

daughter of isisSynopsis:

“Her mouth parted slightly, waiting for Seth to breathe life into her own body, just like in the story. She wanted him to awaken her senses.”

Their worlds collide in California’s high desert.

The last thing Natara “Natti” Stone wants to do is to start anew at Setemple High School. She wished she had never left London. Yet the brutal murder of her maternal grandmother has made her life very complicated. The only clue related to her murder is an ancient, encrypted necklace Natti discovered after her grandmother’s death. And if trying to adjust to American life is not enough, Natti is being stalked by a mysterious, charming high school senior, Seth O’Keefe, who is annoyingly persistent in his attempts at seduction.

Seth O’Keefe is secretly a member of the Sons of Set, an order that worships the Egyptian god of chaos. Seth’s blessing from Set, his “charm,” never failed, except with one person: Natti Stone. Her ability to elude him infatuates and infuriates him, and he becomes obsessed with the chase. But the closer he gets to her, the more his emotions take a dangerous turn, and he risks breaking one of the most valued covenants of his order. The punishment for which is a fate worse than death.

The adventure this unlikely couple becomes engulfed in could cost them their lives and their souls.

My Review:

To be honest I was a little confused with this one. I normally check out other reviews on a book before I choose to be part of a tour – that way I’m more confident when requesting it that I’m going to like it. When I looked into Daughter of Isis I didn’t really find anything online other than cover reveals and bloggers putting it on their ‘to read’ list. And GoodReads yielded little other than generic ‘loved it’ reviews – so I took chance.

The story in itself was interesting and I just loved the setting and how the Egyptian myths were weaved into the plot – there had obviously been a lot or research done by Kelsey to ensure that it all felt ‘real’. A very important part to a supernatural book in my opinion – the real aspects balance up the less than real ones.

From a writer’s perspective I kind of found it slow in the beginning and hard to get into to – this is just my opinion, I am well known for having a short attention span (I blame TV) but I kept reading to ensure I could give a thorough review – and I’m glad I did. The story really does start to open up, and soon enough I was embroiled into the world of Egyptian myths and legends.

My only real bug-bear with Daughter of Isis is that there were spelling errors and mistakes dotted about it. There will always be these in any book, with any publisher – hell, Harry Potter had several! But it did ruin the flow for me in places, which was a shame as the writing really draws you in.

Being British myself and having the main character hailing from England was a nice bonus for me – although some of the words used were a little cliche and perhaps dated – We generally don’t really say ‘arse’ that much.

The front cover is lovely and really does represent the book well – it was actually one of the reasons why I wanted to read it.

Overall I’d give Daughter of Isis 3 out of 5 stars – worth a read if you’re tired of reading about vampires and werewolves, and want a bit of a change of pace.

After graduating from Humboldt State University, Kristin taught high school and middle school English, married her college sweetheart, and had two beautiful munchkins. In 2008, she took time off from teaching to raise her children, and started writing while they napped.

Her first novel was published in 2011, and since then she has had eight other novels published with Entangled Covet, Avon/HarperCollins and Harlequin Nocturne. She is the author of the Seattle Wolf Pack series (starting with the national bestselling book Gone with the Wolf), the dark and gritty Vampires of Crimson Bay series and the short-but-steamy Isle of Feralon novellas.

My Review:

Again, I was silly and didn’t realise that this book was one of a series, although this fortunately centred around different characters, so it wasn’t necessary to read the one before. It also caught you up to speed quite quickly too.

With a title like, Four Weddings and Werewolf, it gives you the impression it’s a light hearted paranormal romantic read – and it is. It made me chuckle in places and the male lead Logan was a typical alpha male (pun intended)

The romantic part was a bit predictable for my liking, but the build-up between Veronica and Logan made up for that, although there was an initial attraction they weren’t instantly in love. Many books out there now seem to skip over that part and have their main characters in love before the plot even gets going. The author didn’t gloss over the necessary stages of romance – which I think helps to take the reader right along with the characters.

From a writer’s perspective it flowed nicely, but I did find Veronica a little much in places and would have liked to see her negative bias on shifters shift quicker to move the storyline along easier. The editing was superb, and especially appreciated as I’ve read a lot of Indie books recently where grammar and spelling was all over the place.

The front cover doesn’t give much away and maybe a wedding theme in the background would have spiced it up a bit – but hey, it shows the two main characters off nicely and always helps when imaging them.

Overall I’d give Four Weddings and a Werewolf 4 out of 5 stars – a Werewolf version of The Bodyguard.

Interview with JT Clay

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATell us about your publishing journey…

I’ve been writing unpublished novels for years. I won an Hachette / Queensland Writers Centre manuscript award in 2008, then got serious. I dropped to part-time salaried work and learnt more about my craft. I didn’t get that book published, started two more, and never finished them. They weren’t terribly good.

A previous version of my zombie novel won an Olvar Wood Fellowship award in 2010. I rewrote it and pitched it to Joel Naoum from Momentum and my agent, Alex Adsett, at GenreCon 2012. A Single Girl’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse was born.

What do you love about being an author?

I love spending time with the people I make up. It’s a mental illness, but the therapy’s fun.

What part do you dislike about being an author?

Rejection is hard but inevitable if you want to get published. And unlike other industries, you don’t know if rejection means you’re not yet good enough, you’ll never be good enough or you’re unlucky.

If I go for ten interviews in my day job, I expect several offers. If I don’t get them, I know my application isn’t right or they were the wrong jobs to apply for.

But if I pitch a novel ten times and don’t get an offer, I still have no idea whether it’s any good.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Read critically. Learn your craft. If you want to write professionally, take it as seriously as any other career.

If you could have dinner with a literary character – who would it be and what would you eat?

Ford Prefect. He makes good cocktails and egotism is so relaxing. I’d eat salted peanuts, just in case.

Zombies are everywhere! What do you do first?9781760080518_A Single Girl's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse_cover

Activate my Z-Day plan. If I told you what was in it, I’d have to pretend you were infected, then kill you.

My partner and I have scenario-tested this plan. It’s a winner, except domestically. His geek skills and military training combined in a perfect storm of lone survivalism. Apparently, step one isn’t going home to see if the girlfriend’s okay.

What was the last book you read and what were your thoughts on it?

Psmith Journalist’ by PG Wodehouse. He’s a funny author who makes jokes without sex, swearing or unseemly violence. Must be a knack. This gem, written in the early 1900s, paints a sweet portrait of gangland New York and features affectionately racist terms that I won’t repeat, because I don’t want the hate mail. It’s interesting to see how G-ratings change over time.

What’s the one question you’d dread on an interview?

“What is your greatest weakness?” As a narcissist, I don’t have any.

You have a time machine, which era do you go back to and why?

The 1920s. Hedonism, PG Wodehouse and legal drugs. Not that I do drugs. Drugs are bad.

I’m writing a time-travel farce set in Auckland in the 1920s, so I already have the time machine, at least mentally.

If you were to cast your book, who would play the leads?

I have unusually poor facial recognition skills and I’m unable to distinguish actors from the roles they’re playing, so I can’t name any for you. I’d cast Buffy’s large and awkward cousin as the female hero.

You free a Genie from a lamp, after wishing away all those zombies from the previous question, you have 2 wishes left, what are they?

Clearly, there’s only one response to this. First, I’d wish for an endless supply of wishes. Next, when I saw the effects, I’d wish to reverse all those wishes I made, except maybe the zombie one. Because fairy tales are wise, right?

What’s your favourite TV show, and why?

I loved the first few series of Chuck, because we abandoned action comedy romance in the 80s and I miss it. And Game of Thrones, which is a condensed version of the best bits from the books (and no, I didn’t finish the series, so don’t tell me what happens). Also, of course, Buffy.
