Movie Review: Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton chronicles the story of the legendary Hip-Hop group Niggaz With Attitude. Based on true events, the movie focuses on the Compton California crew featuring Easy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren.

Dre and Yella are popular DJ’s at a club run by Alonzo Williams. After being arrested, Dre convinces drug dealer Eric Wright to invest money into funding Ruthless Records. Cube writes the track Boys in the Hood for a rap group named Home Boys Only, who rejects the song.

With Cube unable to record due to prior commitments, they convince Wright to perform. The journey advances on a ride through the peak of the group’s popularity during the early 90’s, and concludes with Easy E‘s death, along with Dr. Dre‘s departure from Death Row Records.

The script does an awesome job of dramatizing the group’s unlikely rise to fame. It spends a good amount of time showcasing the group’s talent, as well as the naive business moves which lead to the break up of the crew.

Straight Outta Compton also focuses on how the artist’s life experiences effect the passion in creating their lyrics. The screenplay incorporates other celebrities including Jerry Heller, The DOC, Suge Knight, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Tupac Shakur.

O’Shea Jackson, Jr.

O’Shea Jackson, Jr. is off the chain as he renders his father

O’Shea Jackson, Jr. is off the chain as he renders his father. There is no other actor on the planet that would do a better job of bringing a young Ice Cube to life. Corey Hawkins does a bang-up job of capturing Dr. Dre.

The writers fulfill Easy E‘s character, and Jason Mitchell executes the roll well. Though the movie does not go into the backgrounds of DJ Yella and MC Ren, the script still nails their perspectives. Neil Brown Jr. and Aldis Hodge respectively hold down those two rolls like champions.

With any biopic film about famous musicians, we want to hear music and see performances. Straight Outta Compton has that covered. Cube and Dre record some of the songs fresh for the movie and the script relates the lyrics to the story line, which makes the characters more believable. If you are old enough to know the words to classic N.W.A. songs, then you get ample time to recite and enjoy them.

This film does indeed do justice to the legacy of N.W.A. It will be watched over and over again by many, as it provides a welcomed feeling of nostalgia for anyone who listened to Hip-Hop music during the early 90’s. Do not go into this with hopes of viewing a ‘hood’ movie. Rather expect a feature film that follows the music career of five storied entertainers. And this one is very well done.

Another Rogue Cop Goes Overboard

Now that the dash-cam video has been released, taken down, and re-released again, the nation can see what started this terrible tragedy. Just as suspected, another out of control cop escalated a situation that ended up way worse than it had to be.

Sandra Bland drove along the road minding her own business. A cop car quickly closed in on her out of nowhere. When Bland changed lanes in an effort to get out of the policeman’s way, the cop chose to pull her over for changing lanes without signalling.

This tactic is used often by policemen. Out of the blue, they roll up on you at top speed as if something is on fire. If one reacts to them abruptly, that gives them reason to question you, search you, or in this case pull you over. As an ultimate result, Bland was arrested. She was found dead in police custody days later in what medical examiners ruled a suicide.

Just like the cop at the McKinney Texas swimming pool, this Waller County Texas policeman took it upon himself to be the officer, the judge, the jury, and quite possibly the executioner because someone hurt his feelings.

Their confrontation went completely south when the state trooper asked her about being upset. He then asked her to put out her cigarette. These ploys were clearly geared to intentionally instigate an already bad situation. According to Jim Harrington, the director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, the officer had no reason to ask either question.

“No, she doesn’t have to put out her cigarette. And you wonder why the officer is even bothering with that. This is part of his escalation of the whole event that unfolded, unfortunately.”

The policeman appears to have had a plan as he purposely guided Bland out of the view of the dash-cam. Did he already know he would slam her head to the ground in what could have been a fatal blow? He certainly didn’t care about anything Bland complained about, and he appeared to get a thrill out of the entire event.

There was no effort to deescalate the situation by either party. However, Sandra Bland should not have been pulled over in the first place. The officer created the problem, then went out of his way to push every button he could until someone died. The even worse part about it is that there are many citizens and officers of the law that believe what the cop did in this situation is okay.

And they wonder why some people don’t trust the police.

MUSIC VIDEO: “Pull Up” – Miss Cashley @MissCashley

Touch play to view this jam featuring Miss Cashley.

The video matches the song perfectly. Plus, she ain’t looking too bad in the jean shorts either.

Quick editing, accompanied by nice shot after nice shot makes one want to bounce and sing along.

She’s representing the West Coast and pulling up in a Lexus. I ain’t mad at her. Be sure to check out “Pull Up” on U-Hype LXXXIII.

MUSIC VIDEO: Blaq Fuego – “Fuego Syndrome” @blaqfuego

Touch play to check out the video from Chicago’s own Blaq Fuego. The song is tight, and the video is tight as well. “Fuego Syndrome” got it going on. The MC’s flow on this song. However, the hands down money-shot in this video comes at the 4:18 mark. Grandma steps in the shot and gets her groove on holding a pink plastic baseball bat.

Ya’ gotta love it. She has a yellow container of bubble juice swinging around her neck. She was no doubt out there playing with the kids that day. I ain’t mad at all. Had to rewind that part a couple of times so I could enjoy the moment with her. Blaq Fuego‘s music rotates regularly on BMSRadioChciago.com.

Just Another Day at the Office for that McKinney Texas Cop

This cop’s performance is disturbing on so many levels. He took it upon himself to make a bad situation 100 times worse. I’ve rewound the video several times to try and see why he decided to go on a rampage, and put all the nearest black teenagers into custody.

The big, bad policeman and his ego was even macho enough to attack a teenage girl in a swimsuit. Was this his best option he had to gain control of the situation? How did he expect everyone else around him to react as he slammed her to the ground? Was he searching for a reason to pull a gun on a bunch of unarmed teenagers? Did he not expect those kids to run in that situation? Was he trying to make the situation look out of control, so his coworkers would have a reason to swarm in and arrest a bunch of kids? Luckily, he let the white kid continue to shoot the video.

My skin crawled as I listened to the young men sit there and beg this asshole to allow them to leave. The cop felt like he had some authority as he stood over them and pointed down with his condescending ass finger.

If I had a son, I would coach him to sit there and remain silent until Daddy arrived if he were ever in that situation. I would teach him to never get in any type of ego struggle with the police.

I’ve seen this happen dozens of times as I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Life would’ve gone on for everyone in many situations if the cops would have handle things differently. Yes, they serve and protect us at times. However, many other times they make things way worse than they have to be. And nobody ever does anything about it.
