Does the persistent anxiety that you should be writing more ever go away?

The glib answer would be to say, “Ask me in a few more years.”

But, more truthfully, while I understand exactly what you’re talking about, I don’t experience that feeling as anxiety so much as I feel a sense of incompleteness in any day where I don’t accomplish something. Some days, that sense of accomplishment can only be attained by writing; other days I can feel quite accomplished just playing with my daughter.

These days, as POWERS rushes toward its first day of production and I have a gre...

While I believe that reasonable compromise is at the heart of all true diplomacy, it is essential to have a consistent political philosophy underpinning one’s negotiations.

Thank you, Snake, for articulating my core values so very well.

Truth be told, it’s a few years since I last cracked Murakami. I need to be in a particular headspace for his books; unhurried, open to digression. The last one I read wasAfter Dark, which I thought was lovely, very readable, subtly moving in the way that most of his book are. But not terribly characteristic of his work, I think. More direct, less whimsical/bizarre. That would be the shallow end of the Murikami pool. A comfortable place to start, but it won’t necessarily prepare you for what’...

I'm pretty sure you get a lot of these, so I'll keep it brief, but I was just so excited to find your tumblr. I've been a fan of your books since picking up Already Dead back in junior high, and I think by now I've worn out the spines on most. Thank you fo

Well, who gets tired of responding to complementary messages like this one?

Not I.

Hey, oeste, thanks.

Already Dead in junior high? It sounds like we had similar reading lists going. I remember my sixth grade teacher finding the copy ofBored of the Rings that I was reading. She took a peek at the semi-pornographic excerpt inside the front cover, blanched, and gasped, “Charlie!” And then she handed the book back to me and said, “Do not show this to anyone else in cla...
