The Minstrel BoyThe Minstrel Boy

In 1936 six young men left England to fight against the fascists in Spain. Only one came home. He left behind the love of his life and his precious mandolin. Then came the letter . . .the letter that changed everything.
This is the story of how Nick returned to Franco’s Spain on the brink of the outbreak of WWII on a quest to rescue his lost love.

“A powerfully evocative story about an idealistic young soldier-musician who goes off to fight for Spain in the Civil War, where he meets Rosa – a young Spanish woman who saves his life and steals his heart.
For an afternoon of delightful escapism, I can’t recommend this great collection enough. Well done Ms Twist. More please!” Manic Scribbler

"The Minstrel Boy" is set in the 1930s, during the time of the Spanish Civil War and the events leading to World War II. It's the story of a love affair between an idealistic young Englishman and a strong and realistic young Spanish woman. Jenny Twist's knowledge of the time and her great talent for drawing character and detail make the tale unforgettable.” M. Thornburg

Yesterday Jeremy Corbyn had a meeting with the heads of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and Board of Deputies (BoD). Afterwards Jonathan Goldstein and Jonathan Arkush labelled it a “disappointing missed opportunity” with little achieved. What they wanted, apparently, included stronger personal leadership, a swift resolution of party disciplinary cases such as that of Ken Livingstone, and Labour adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

I assume that by ‘strong personal leadership’ they mean someone who shouts a lot, like, for instance, Theresa May. Jeremy Corbyn has pulled together a political party shattered and without direction after years of Blairism and put it back on its proper course, that of socialism. He has more than doubled the membership of the party since winning the leadership contest and he has demonstrated that the Labour Party is electable. I think that demonstrates very strong personal leadership.

When we examine antisemitism in the party we should consider the following:
1. There is antisemitism in all the parties and indeed in society at large. It is much more rife in the Tory Party than in the Labour Party, of which only 0.3% are deemed to be anti-Semitic. So why is Labour being singled out? (Clue: there is an election coming up. You can draw a parallel between this and Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' campaign).
2. Jeremy Corbyn has demonstrated over and over again that he believes in the rule of law and that neither war nor punishment of individuals should take place until the evidence has been examined and ruled upon. So the disciplinary hearings are taking time? At least there are disciplinary hearings. Where are the Tory disciplinary hearings? The Labour Party is the ONLY political party which is investigating antisemitism in its ranks.

3. The definition of antisemitism which the Jewish leaders urged Labour to adopt includes criticism of the State of Israel if conceived as a Jewish collectivity. What is the State of Israel if it is not a Jewish collectivity. This definition effectively bars criticism of the State of Israel – full-stop.
Bear in mind that this group of Jewish leaders does not represent all Jewish people. A great many Jews would themselves be defined as antisemitic using this definition of antisemitism.

Let's get real. Jeremy Corbyn is known to be anti-racist, pacifist and law-abiding. He believes in justice and is unlikely to sack people until the case is proved. He is definitely going to criticise cruel regimes. None of this is anti-Semitic. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion in order to distract the British people from the far more urgent issue of the impending elections. (Note, I did NOT say more important).

The Labour Party is the ONLY political party which is investigating antisemitism in its ranks. Cut them some slack and give them time to investigate properly. And in the meantime, why not investigate antisemitism in the Tory Party?
If you would like to read the Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism follow this link:
