Man eater

            “Jillian
is the man eater I told you about,” Laurie chimed in.

            “Oh
stop Laurie,” Nicky said.  “She’s not a
man eater.  She’s just waiting for the
right one.  There’s nothing wrong with
that.  Too many people jump too fast, at
our age who wants to make another bad decision?”

Let's dance

            “Let’s
dance,” he said taking my hand.

With all the music we were around
together we had never danced.  We danced song after song.  I watched him watch me, smiling.  The music slowed and I started to go
back to the table.

“Not so fast kid,” he said.
Kid?  Who was that anymore?  Not the same girl he had known.

Fill space

We walked out the back door and down onto the beach.  Ryan and I took off our flip flops and
carried them.  The sand felt warm on my
feet.  We walked toward the shoreline
where the wet sand was easier to walk on.
We headed towards Torrey Pines.

            Ryan never talked
just to fill space, so when he was silent it didn’t feel uncomfortable.  After we walked a long way we sat in the sand
and watched the waves and he told me more about Marcy.   I scooped sand up slowly letting it run out of
my hands onto my feet, burying them while I listened.

Big round fire ball

The sun had started to set.  I watched as the sun, like a big round fire
ball, slowly sank into the ocean.  There
was a small amount of haze, or smog, reflecting the light just so, to create a
thin layer above the water all red and purple and orange.  It spread as far as you could see in both
directions.

            “Pretty,” Mathew said coming up
behind me.

He was close enough I could feel the
electricity between us, I breathed in
deeply, smelling him.  Why did I
never tire of that?

            “Thank you,” I said.

“I meant the sunset, but you too,”
he chuckled.

Breakfast

Ryan took me out to breakfast the next morning
at Mount Air Café, a diner that had been around forever.  We were up and showered before anyone else in
the house was awake.  When we left I
could see some of Pat’s friends were asleep on the couches, and the house was a
mess.  I was sure Pat would question why Ryan’s
van was at the house.  I sat picking at
my undercooked eggs while Ryan ate his pancakes.  I felt like I needed to explain myself.  How I could crawl into bed with him when we
both knew I was going back to Max.

Drama queen

            “Don’t
be a fucking drama queen Morgan,” he said.

I didn’t move.  I looked away from him staring instead at the
ceiling. I felt hurt, angry, and prideful all at
the same time.  I finally got up from the
floor.

“You can be the biggest asshole
sometimes,” I said heading for the door.

“Show me your tits,” he said.

I froze and let his words
register.  Without thinking I swung
around lifting up my shirt and bra and flashed him.

“There you go,” I said letting him
get a good look at my boobs.

Girls night out

Went out on a 40th last night, drinking and dancing.  Girls out can be fun, still enjoy a quiet evening with my hubby though--he did get to watch sports while I was away, so all good.

Smell of change

She
could still picture herself in the passenger seat next to her mother, barely
able to look over the dashboard.  The
smell of her mother’s perfume mixed with the smell of the leather seats filled
her nostrils, the smell of change.  To
this day she couldn’t imagine what her mother ever saw in her father.  She could not imagine them ever being happy
together, enough to get married, enough for her mother to have sex with him and
make a baby.  The thought made her shiver.

Spill it

“Spill it,” Ryan said.

I could tell he was tired of my pensive
sadness.

            “I don’t want to,”
I said.

            “Why?” he asked.

            “Cause it’s
over.  It was over before, but now it’s
really over,” I said.

            “If you love him,
why is it over?” he asked.

            I watched the sun
sink lower in the sky throwing a bright line of light across the ocean at us.  I didn’t answer him.
