Ev Bishop is an award-winning, USA Today bestselling author, who believes in the power of fiction to transform lives, knowing we both lose ourselves—and find ourselves!—in good stories.

Best known for her small-town contemporary romance series, River’s Sigh B & B, readers describe her books as “full of humor, love and wisdom,” set in places “where breathtaking scenery and the magic of love are the best medicine for the soul.”

In addition to writing novels—her favorite length of story because she always has so much she wants to fit in!—Ev was a columnist with the Terrace Standard for almost twenty years and is a prolific scribbler of . . . other things. Her articles, essays, short stories, and poems appear in a variety of publications, and she

I don't know how I missed this question that you asked so long ago, Dawn! Please forgive my very tardy reply.

My inspiration for River's Sigh B & B has many parts. :)

I have always loved books about bed and breakfasts and daydreamed about running my own one day (but then I realized I could create a fictional one instead and have all the fun of making beautiful meals, planning pampering treats, and creating gorgeous dream cabins without all the sheer amount of physical labor. ;D)

Plus, I live in a gorgeous rural area in northern British Columbia, Canada, where I'm constantly awed by the beauty of nature and its power to help people rest and recover from stress or other hard things in life.

And, most particularly, there is a river in my life named the Skeena. It may sound weird, but it has had a profound effect on me over the years, and I've actually written about it many times (in fiction and in non-fiction). Even its name, which is derived from the Gitxsan First Nation's word 'Ksan, meaning “river of the mists,” inspires me. It has been the lifeblood of the Tsimshian and Gitxsan people for centuries, providing a staple food source for its residents long before the coming of Europeans, and continues to be a source of wealth and beauty for all the region's new additions too.

Anyway, I love the Skeena and have walked her banks, fished her waters, and camped beside her many times. She has comforted me during long walks in the hardest, saddest and/or angriest times of my life, and been witness to some of my happiest, most peaceful and joyful, exuberant times as well.

So . . . I wanted to create a place as special as her for my characters, often hurt somehow by life, to heal, and for readers to visit and hopefully be encouraged and delighted by too.

From your kind words, it sounds like I succeeded. :) :)

P.S. If you're ever up in northern BC, let me know. I can definitely recommend some gorgeous B & B cabins for you to stay at. They're not River's Sigh B & B, but two I have specifically in mind are pretty close. :) (less)

Ah, summer reading! Is there anything better? (Okay, well, fall, winter, and spring reading come close! :D) Good question.

This summer, in our stressful Covid times, I'm all about feel-good stories and/or going on vacation via a good book. In July I went to Ireland twice and Sicily once.

I just finished The House by the Sea by Louise Douglas (highly recommend) and am deep into and loving her novel Missing You.

Next up, I'm going to read A Riviera Retreat by Jennifer Bohnet, The Villa in Sicily by Elise Darcy, and Saltwater Cove by Amelia Addler.

If you're craving a little getaway too, my River's Sigh B & B series is a wonderful escape. (less)

Edward Abbey
“Benedicto: May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you -- beyond that next turning of the canyon walls.”
Edward Abbey
