I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend, and I thought I'd love it -- I'm a mystery fan, love dogs, and like books with a quirky/off-beat sense of humor. But unfortunately, I found this book hard to finish -- if it'd been any longer, I'd ...more

I thought this book was splendid. The surreal, shifting world of London Below was brilliantly drawn, and I was completely pulled in. Awesome -- which I would say as well about every other Gaiman book I've read.

My overall reaction: "Meh." A couple of the short stories were okay -- "Rare Bird" probably the best of them -- but the character development in most of them was so flat that I just couldn't get myself invested in what happened. (And this is coming f ...more

I'm puzzled, because I honestly don't see what all of the buzz is about this book. I didn't finish it -- simply lost interest in its characters, and found the writing labored and dull. Maybe the problem is me -- a lot of people clearly loved it -- bu ...more

The Clocks by Agatha Christie

The most contrived of Agatha Christie's mysteries, although not the worst; that honor goes to "Postern of Fate." I really like a lot of Christie, but this one deserves to be skipped based solely on the ridiculous solution to the murder, which require ...more

“It’s like Sherlock Holmes said—when you have eliminated what is impossible, whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth.”
Gordon Bonnet, Lock & Key

“Soon he was toiling up a steep slope, the first of three long, sweeping switchbacks that in three miles as the crow flies, and six to follow the road, would finally flatten out onto the top of Eastham Rise, where a hundred and fifty years ago Abraham Vanderzee had donated the land that would one day house the most prestigious research institution in the area. But”
