The idiotic saga burned through hundreds of billions in debt, saw more than 50,000 people lose their jobs, killed off numerous popular brands (like Mad Magazine), created oceans of animosity among creatives (pissed at a company that can somehow spend billions on merger debt and bad ideas yet is routinely too cheap to pay residuals or writers), culminating in a streaming service full of holes that’s arguably dumber and of lower quality than when the whole thing started.

Meet José Sarria, “Empress of San Francisco.”

californiastatelibrary:

In 1961, José Sarria ran for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and became the first openly gay candidate to run for office in the United States. After an unsuccessful run, Sarria’s activism gained speed. He helped found several gay organizations — SIR, or the Society of Individual Rights, the League for Civil Education, and the Imperial Court System, one of the oldest and largest LGBT organizations in the world.

The Imperial Court System is a grassroots net...

An image of a famous olympic ski race in which a contestant wins due to all the competitors falling over. Superimposed over the winner's face is the Tumblr logo, followed by Reddit, Twitter and Facebook who are clumsily falling over in the far distance.ALT

This site toppling the competition by opting to sell shoelaces instead of monetising their users must be one of the greatest examples of failing upwards in history

OnThisDay in 1878, Eadweard Muybridge took this series of images of a racehorse in motion. A former governor of California reportedly had bet on whether all the hooves were airborne at once, and hired Muybridge to settle the debate: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-attitudes-of-animals-in-motion-illustrated-with-the-zoopraxiscope-1882 #OTD

charliejaneanders:

Transgender individuals and their loved ones are increasingly criminalized by their home states and their care, banned. This is prompting a growing number to seek refuge elsewhere. … Should this trend persist, we may witness the largest domestic migration crisis since the Dust Bowl upheaval of the 1940s.

US Internal Refugee Crisis: 130-260k Trans People Have Already Fled

Grateful to live in a sanctuary state (MN). Please move here!

intrigue-posthaste-please:

I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually D...
