Murder at the Book Group

I wanted to show how humor can be a natural and welcome partner to tragedy and grief. I don’t think of it as a humorous mystery but I make use of humor as a natural reaction and way of interacting. Besides murder, this story addresses some serious social issues: stem cell research, pornography, and sex addiction are just a few. But it’s all cloaked in humor.

I’m intrigued by the idea of unintended (unconsidered) consequences. In other words, how people don’t take into account the consequences of their actions. They might think of how their actions will affect other people but not necessarily how they themselves will be affected.

I love reading and I’ve been in many book groups (no murders, thankfully!) so a book group seemed like a natural setting. Book groups attract a wide variety of people who read for different reasons (enjoyment, escape, education, etc.). I enjoyed weaving different personality styles and backgrounds into my story.

"I loved this story because the opening scene hooked me from the first word. I found Hazel to be realistic. A character that a reader can relate to because she has actual life problems.
I found that this was entertaining because the characters jump off" Read more of this review »

“We spent the next thirty minutes watching Carlene, by turns dominant and submissive, engaged in all manner of, let’s say, alternative sexual activity. As I’d guessed, the C&B tapes featured Carlene and B.J., while Randy was the “R” in C&R. I passed on C&E—I didn’t have the heart, or stomach, to watch Evan showing his stuff on tape.”
