Sometimes I weave my way through stacks of books and streaks of dust-filled light and emerge from my room. Sometimes I even work my way past characters and fantasies and emerge from my own head. Usually I just write them down.

There are times when I don't feel like working on something or I'm not sure where it's going, but like any other job, you can't just check out indefinitely if you're not in the mood. I'll put whatever I don't feel like working on aside, and work on something else; a blog post, a song, anything. If I keep working on something, the solution will eventually come to me, whereas if I just check out, nothing will get resolved.

I've also almost never met a writer's block I couldn't force out with an hour on the treadmill or doing the dishes. Something about keeping my body in motion while my brain untangles threads just works for me.(less)

The Afterglow

Hey there. I’m back again, and I brought another friend with me.

Everyone knows about the afterglow: When someone dies, their spirit briefly visits the living soul who meant the most to them, before quickly fading from this world.

Jake and Emma were normal teens in high school, until a tragic accident claimed Emma’s life. Jake’s understanding of the world is fractured when Emm...

David Lovato is on page 48 of 93 of Most Nights, I Wish It Was You. Poems and Short Stories: The words "I love you" seemed so broken and so inaccurate.
The words "I promise" seemed so trite and so distant.
But so foolish a passenger caught up in this accident,
Nothing mattered beyond the fact that I was damaged and I was hurting physically,
Yet somehow I found the strength to thank my God I was a survivor
And that's when I heard the fate of the driver.
Three seconds later: closure, not answers. Just closure.

More of David's books…
Ray Bradbury
“If we listened to our intellect we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go in business because we'd be cynical: "It's gonna go wrong." Or "She's going to hurt me." Or,"I've had a couple of bad love affairs, so therefore . . ." Well, that's nonsense. You're going to miss life. You've got to jump off the cliff all the time and build your wings on the way down.”
Ray Bradbury

Ursula K. Le Guin
“Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward towards the light; but the laden traveler may never reach the end of it.”
Ursula K. LeGuin, The Tombs of Atuan

Mark Z. Danielewski
“Little solace comes
to those who grieve
when thoughts keep drifting
as walls keep shifting
and this great blue world of ours
seems a house of leaves

moments before the wind.”
Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves

Ursula K. Le Guin
“He had been trying to measure the distance between the earth and God.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Wind's Twelve Quarters

Ursula K. Le Guin
“This was a great magic. Festin had no more performed it than has any man who in exile or danger longs for the earth and waters of his home, seeing and yearning over the doorsill of his house, the table where he has eaten, the branches outside the window of the room where he has slept. Only in dreams do any but the great Mages realize this magic of going home.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Wind's Twelve Quarters
