Honest Self Poem

Honest Self PoemAn Honest Look

In this Honest Self Poem, life takes us from helpless to daring, powerful to powerless. Hope lies not in ourselves but in taking the hand helping us all along.

First, we lay,

Upon the primeval bed, no words to say.

Safe and sound,

Snug world all around,

Our hearts beat to a gentle rhythm,

Life’s carefree poetic prism.

Next, we crawl,

Searching and seeking, up the stairs and down the hall.

Hot and cold, bumps and bruises,

Our innocent spirit something loses.

Yet self-determined, we crave motion,

A world beyond—land and ocean.

Stand up!

Toddle forward, fall, roll, a frolicking pup.

The view on high,

We can’t deny!

Climb chairs, trees, ladders, and more,

We must rise, our hearts to soar.

Words, birds, stories, songs, all kinds of sound.

  Torrent of noise, still, our feet walk firmly on the ground.

Tall and knowing, leadership growing,

Daring deeds, plant seeds, seize the day!

Until

Amid shock and sorrow,

Troubles arrive.

We lose our way

No boastful chant—Come What May!

Weakness, hurt, flaws, and sin,

We break into pieces, little hope within.

Upon our knees, we fall,

Our spirits weep, and our souls do crawl.

Gnash our teeth and rage in fury,

Our eyes can’t see, the world, now blurry.

Only in silence, a single hymn repeat,

Admit failure, our own defeat.

Prostrate on the ground,

Silence turns to music, a heavenly sound.

Helpless and hopeless

We go nowhere.

Yet, cresting the horizon, new vision, life’s greatest dare.

Our innocence in hope renewed

An honest look at self when nude.

Beyond trumpet blares and glory purpose, the scenic landscape clears.

A kindly, reaching hand nears.

Now we know what we did not sow.

We never climbed alone, self-empowered.

Never once personal vision towered.

Over that which made our hearts beat,

Supportive strength, feet to walk, and friends to greet.

We climb the ego mount alone

Fault in others and self must atone.

Down and up, and down again, we lay.

Some day to stand within a truly glorious ray.

The Earth’s Demise?

The Earth’s Demise?

Look around. Are we facing The Earth’s Demise? Blue skies lined with birds soaring carefree, abundantly lush woodlands, forests, grasslands, tundra, taigas, and deserts, exclaims life’s beauty, behind which lies a powerful reality: what we do with our planet today will make a difference to generations tomorrow. What are some of the problems our planet faces today?

Humanity in terms of human beings is not the problem. In fact, recent numbers warn of a massive fertility drop across the globe, which is, in part, due to excessive fear about “overpopulation” and not enough concern with human behavior, self-discipline, and personal responsibility.

Pollution

Improper agriculture procedures, landfills, mining, and nuclear waste cause land pollution. Air pollution is caused by greenhouse gases and carbon emissions harmful to the “ozone layer,” and water pollution is caused when chemical waste is spewed into the oceans.

Resource Exploitation

Needless to say, life needs energy to survive. However, we humans aren’t very efficient on that spectrum. According to research done by the UN, humans consume twice as many resources as they can regenerate. This list is not limited to just water.

Converting land into mega-farms can cause immense deforestation and desertification. Clearing forests and natural habitats for fuel and grazing contributes to biodiversity loss and the extinction of species.

Why can we not regenerate the planet’s resources at the same capacity as we consume them? We could if we prioritized our time, money, and energy, and self-disciplined ourselves about the issues at hand.

Is There Salvation?

Can humanity work with nature for a better tomorrow?

While some may argue that we have reached the point of no return, the biggest indicator that suggests that the damage to the planet is redeemable is in its history. Our planet has been around for more than 4.5 billion years and has drastically changed. From being completely ice-caped where wooly mammoths ruled the land to dinosaurs and the catastrophic asteroid crash that altered the entire world, our planet has always found ways to rejuvenate.

Healing takes time. We can play our part and even speed up the process.

Mindfulness of Carbon:Incorporate walking or biking to some of your regular short-trip destinations. Turn off lights and unplug devices when you’re not using them.Keep the tires on your car properly inflated and get regular tune-ups. Eat more food that is grown or made locally and less red meat.Use the cold water cycle for washing your clothes and do only full loads.Keep stuff out of landfills. Use alternative transportation (bus, train, carpool, or bike) whenever possible.Raw Material Alternatives

Some raw materials are hazardous to the environment—plastic products like water bottles, disposable razors, and even some teabags. Using biodegradable materials will help sustain the planet.

We can create more of our goods from biodegradable resources like bamboo, coconut, repurposed cloth and fabrics, jute, cork, organic cotton, beeswax and soy-wax, wood, coir products, even seaweed is a multifaceted resource that is also biodegradable.

Efficient Resource Utilization:

Oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone, sand, air, sunlight, soils, water, animals, birds, fish, and plants are Earth’s natural resources, which we use for food, fuel, housing, and raw materials for making other goods.

Making better use of what we have, repurposing our garbage, and using fewer materials and less fuel, will allow us to experience the joys of simpler lives that go a long way toward healing our planet.

Do our actions and life choices matter? After all, we are a lone blue spec in the abyss of space. Are we really alone?

Author A. K. Frailey is back with a prelude to her sci-fi fiction, The Last of Her Kindwhich sees humanity on the verge of extinction on a dying planet. Spectating from afar, our protagonist, an alien watcher by the name of Cerulean, empathizes with them on a different level. He grows fond of Anne, who bears a child in an unrelenting world. Cerulean seeks to save the human race from its inevitable doom. However, as conflict arises on his own planet, Lux, will his love be enough to see humanity into a new future?

OldEarth Aram Encounter

OldEarth Aram EncounterBook Excerpt from Chapter ThirtyGrassland—Lake ClanA Curse You Share

In this book excerpt from OldEarth Aram Encounter, a final confrontation and the effects of generational sin set the stage for a tumultuous future.

Aram looked from Neb to Joash and back to Neb. He stepped aside and indicated that two warriors were to take Joash away.

The warriors grabbed Joash by the arms, thrusting him into the village.

Aram turned his palms up in a gesture of welcome and gestured for the old man to walk ahead.

Neb tottered forward as if ready to collapse.

Aram stepped behind him but peered over his shoulder and waved a new warrior to stand guard. Inside the large council dwelling, Aram faced Neb.

The flap rustled, and Jonas stepped in and sat down a little distance away.

Aram frowned. Oh, no…

Neb ignored the woman and seemed to withdraw into an inner world.

Eymard offered food and water, and then gamely positioned himself as an assistant.

Aram scratched his head and leaned in toward Eymard. “I’m surprised Namah hasn’t made it inside.”

Eymard’s eyes widened, clearly horrified.

Shifting into a comfortable position, Aram cleared his throat. “You’re welcome as a messenger of peace. As you know, Onias sacrificed his life to bring such a message to you. But before we speak of peace, I’d like to know more about you and your people. It’s always best to know exactly who we’re dealing with.”

Neb acquiesced, lifting up his trembling hands. “I am Neb, son of Serug and grandson of Neb the Great. Our home is on the shore of the Great Eastern River. Long ago, we lived among the trees in the far western lands south of the mountains. When my father moved from my grandfather’s clan, we traveled north to the hills and east through grasslands very much like those we crossed coming here.”

His shoulders slumping in apparent misery, Neb clasped his hands together. “We’ve been attacked so many times—we see enemies everywhere. A mistaken report warned our council that you had prepared an attack on our people. Only lately have we learned that your messenger of peace had been killed.” He sighed. “It was a terrible mistake, and the guilty should pay with his life. It’ll be my greatest joy to assure my people that we have established a peace treaty with you.”

Aram’s face flushed. His gaze dropped to his hands and he forced himself to stop clasping and unclasping them. Sweat broke over his forehead. He called to one of his men and whispered in his ear.

Straightening, he met Neb’s steady gaze. He spoke slowly—each word emphasized with deliberate force. “Tell me—do your women—bear many children?”

For the first time, Neb’s demeanor cracked. He frowned. “I don’t know why you ask, but the answer is a painful one. No, our women do not carry many babies, and even when they do, the babies come too soon and die quickly. It’s a miserable fate. Who told you? My son, Ishtar?”

Aram shook his head. “Not Ishtar.”

Neb’s eyes glanced aside as if searching for his son. “Even if a son lives, yet he may be as good as dead.”

Aram observed his clan members shifting in unease, murmuring aside to each other. Some men’s eyes were wide and sympathetic, while Obed and Eoban frowned in confusion. Barak maintained a stony silence. Only Eymard, sitting in the shadows, leaned forward, a knowing gleam in his eyes.

Aram folded his hands in his lap. He lowered his voice. “I’d like to tell you, Neb, son of Serug, who I am, so that we may see eye to eye in all things.”

His gaze returning inward, glassy-eyed and bored, Neb nodded.

“My name is a common one. I am Aram, and my father was Elath. My grandfather was Madai—and my great-grandfather was Neb the Great.”

Gasps bounced around the council chamber.

Neb’s knuckles whitened as he clasped them, his shoulders stiffened, and his head bowed.

Unperturbed, Aram continued. “Neb was considered evil among my father’s people. They lived in the southern hills for generations, but when my grandfather and his brother disagreed, our clan traveled into the forests while his brother settled in the grasslands. A pair of wild cats recently forced us from our land, and we’ve made a new home not far from here. The Grassland People sent their women and children across the lake to seek safety from your invasion. Seeing the threat to innocent people, we gave aid. I didn’t know until a few moments ago that I’d find a lost kinsman in such a conflict.”

The entire assembly murmured, everyone speaking at once. Neb remained still and silent, his gaze fixed on the ground.

Rising to his knees, Aram stared at Neb’s immovable form.

“We do not speak of our history—it’s been lost to all but a few elders who hold the truth deep inside. But as leader, I learned our history well, and I remember the tales told about your father. I know what forces formed you. I know why your women are barren. You accuse the gods in vain.”

Aram stood and called several men to his side. After giving curt, whispered commands, he returned to Neb. “Because it is the cause of so much torment, I’ll explain why your women suffer so.” He lifted his hands and turned to the assembly. “There is a plant that, when eaten, will kill the baby in the mother.”

His glare swung back to Neb. “Do you tell them that this toxic plant is good for them—or insist that the gods require them to eat it? What lies do you spread to achieve your ends? My grandfather never used this plant, and when my father learned of it, he would not allow it.”

Neb lifted his head, his gaze locking on Aram, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

Aram spat to the side. “I see in your eyes that you have used it knowingly—as your father did.” Aram stomped away. “I was only a child when my grandfather died. I’m only sorry he didn’t end your evil line long ago.”

A warning shout rang through the air. “Attack! Fire!”

With a look of mad glee, Neb leaped to his feet. He shrugged, pretending helpless innocence.

A frightened youth scampered into the tent. “Warriors have come! They’re setting fire to everything.”

Eoban and Obed rushed outside.

Aram poked Neb in the chest. “You will inform your warriors that the battle is over—the curse has been lifted. You can go home and dispel the darkness caused by your terrible lie.”

With a stubborn purse of the lips, Neb shook his head as if he were a petulant child who would not mind his parent.

Gripping Neb by the shoulder, Aram shoved him toward the opening, but Neb wrenched free.

Aram stood back and allowed his enemy to walk outside into the bright sunlight. Three huts smoldered in smoke and flames. Aram growled. “Call your men! Tell them the curse has been lifted, and there’s no need to battle for slaves. If not, you’ll die at my hand right now, and utter darkness will consume you.”

Neb raised his hands in a dramatic gesture and called out in an alarmingly strong voice. “River Clan! I am Neb. You know my voice! Listen to me!”

The shouts and yells quieted to murmurs and sporadic screams.

“I command! Kill them all! Leave no man alive!”

Aram grabbed Neb around the neck and threw him to the ground.

Neb’s unnatural smirk of satisfaction froze Aram in place. With a gasp, he shook his head as if to release himself from an evil spell.

Leaping like a yearling lamb, Neb sprang at Aram and wrapped his fingers around his throat.

In turn, Aram locked his powerful hands around Neb’s neck. His eyes widened in horror at the strength of his opponent. He pictured Onias’s burial mound. The man died because he underestimated his enemy.

Eymard hustled behind Neb, a cudgel in his wrinkled, shaking hands.

Cold horror shivered over Aram as he thought of what Neb would do to the old men and the children. God Almighty! Give me strength!

Suddenly, a tremendous force bowled the two men over. Two young men landed on them at the same time. Barak and Ishtar grabbed Neb’s claw-like fingers and pried them away from Aram’s neck.

Aram rolled to the side as Ishtar grabbed his knife and held it against his father’s throat. He looked into Neb’s glaring eyes and whispered. “The only curse on our people was you!”

Neb cackled, his face breaking into a monstrous grin. “It’s a curse you share, my son!” Gripping Ishtar’s hands, he redirected the knife and thrust it into his own heart. Neb grunted on impact and his blood spurted.

With a strangled yelp, Ishtar sprang to his feet.

Exhaling a hissing breath, Neb’s head turned to the side. He shook one feeble finger at his son. His eyes glazed over and saw no more.

Ishtar stood rooted to the ground; blood splattered on his hands.

Barak gripped Ishtar’s shoulders and pulled him away. “It’s not your fault. The man was mad. Perhaps—it’s better this way.”

Falling to his knees, Ishtar’s gaze traveled from his father to his bloody hands. “A curse I share.” He howled like a wounded animal and crumpled, covering his head with his arms.

Still rubbing his neck, Aram stood by Ishtar’s prostrate form and surveyed the tail end of the battle. Neb’s warriors were being rounded up. The freed slaves had arrived, and the combined forces had made their victory inevitable.

Tears welled, blurring Aram’s vision. He spoke to no one in particular. “It didn’t have to end this way.”

Hybrid Intelligence

Hybrid IntelligenceThe FutureHow Can AI and Human Intelligence Work Together?

Hybrid Intelligence is here whether we are ready for it or not. What is it and how can humanity and AI work together for a better future?

Ever wonder if you will one day be fired from your job because AIs have it covered?

Artificial intelligence is indeed becoming good at many human jobs – diagnosing diseases, translating languages,  and even customer services. It is upgrading and developing, yet it doesn’t mean there is a risk of mass unemployment because, according to research, artificial intelligence is deployed better with humans.

This is the reason human intelligence and artificial intelligence are emerging as one – Hybrid Intelligence.

What is Hybrid Intelligence and How is it Essential?

Hybrid intelligence is a collaboration between artificial and human intelligence. This combination can potentially produce powerful and highly productive systems that outperform either human or artificial intelligence alone.

AI faces complexities in terms of adapting to dynamic situations, like self-adjustment, and even lacks common sense. It works best for well-defined tasks under controlled environments. Comparatively, AI requires lots of data for training as compared to humans. Hybrid intelligence systems combine the analytics and automation of AI with human brainpower, which makes it high-powered, more effective, and commanding.

Hybrid intelligence will help create more employment opportunities. It augments human talents and skills to perform tasks. With robotics, businesses can automate hazardous jobs. Both AI and human intelligence work on different algorithms; each works better in areas where the other might fail. It is the perfect combo.

Artificial intelligence and human interaction can assist in reducing mistakes in routine work. Not only this, but it also helps in improving customer interactions. Humans and AI can help enhance each other’s strengths with quantitative, qualitative, imaginative, social, and analytical capabilities.

By working together, errors can be eliminated, creating more effective, efficient, and reliable systems.

Delve deep into the story of Justine Santana, a human-android hybrid used as an advantageous weapon during an inter-alien war. The book, Newearth: Justine Awakens, is an outstanding narrative by A. K. Frailey that will give you better insights into AI and hybrid intelligence.

How Can AI and Human Intelligence Work Together?

The combination of artificial and human intelligence can provide mind-blowing outcomes. The future is hybrid intelligence, but let’s check other ways humans and artificial intelligence can work together.

Augmented Intelligence

Augmented intelligence is where artificial intelligence is used to improve human intelligence. Let’s say robot machines can create and analyze vast amounts of data and present it to humans. It allows humans to assess the data and create an analysis easily.

Collaborative Intelligence

This is where the human brain and AI work cooperatively to achieve common ground. Let’s take an example of a patient being checked for a brain scan. Here, AI can help assess symptoms in the patient, but after the reports, human beings will present the diagnosis and treatment plans.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence

Here, artificial intelligence assists in providing explanations to humans for the decisions and actions it takes. This helps us comprehend and have a better understanding of why and how AI makes decisions so that we can correct errors easily if there are any present.

By combining the strength of both human and android power, a spectacular machine or robot can be created to help perform any task; just like Justine from Newearth: Justine Awakens – with her compelling power, she could destroy or save anyone.

Education in Today’s World

Education in Today’s WorldMy Road Goes Ever OnHomeschooling As I See It Now

As this school year comes to a close, I must once again reevaluate what Education in Today’s World means to me. Has the human race really learned anything?

My eldest son is twenty-seven now, and the day he was born was my last active day of teaching in the public school system. Though he didn’t technically start “school” until kindergarten, five years later, every mother knows that education starts from the day her child is born. For both the child and the parent.

There are a lot of things to discover and obstacles to navigate those first years, from walking and talking, to the various meanings of tone and expressions. Does “yes” really mean, yes? Does “no” really mean, no? Consequences can be daunting but also magnificent learning tools. So long as a child doesn’t get killed in the process. Balancing the reality of experience and the “Don’t run into traffic!” warning means that a parent has to know for himself or herself what he or she is teaching. Does the parent really mean what he or she is saying? Is he or she willing to pay the price of letting a lesson go unlearned? Because parents pay the price, too, make no mistake.

When I started teaching in public and private schools in the nineteen-eighties, I soon realized that parents could only do so much, and it was up to teachers to fill in the blanks. Unfortunately, in crime-ridden neighborhoods, that meant navigating through gangs, guns, and threats to a child’s well-being. The hardest lesson I ever learned was that some parents had no interest in being parents. They were mentally and emotionally children themselves. Recrimination has never been my strong suit, but I have seen the consequences of the lack of a responsible adult in a child’s life. Children may turn to their peers for help, but other children are not a replacement for the wisdom, strength, guidance, and encouragement of an engaged, mature adult.

The trend I have witnessed in the last few decades has been a repeat and rinse cycle of emotionally wounded and—at times, with the handicap of drugs or alcohol—mentally underdeveloped adults trying to raise kids. That includes not only the parents but educators as well.

Coming from a dysfunctional family in a dysfunctional society, I see why many people turn to technology to find support and “the truth” needed to navigate through life—a life raft of reason in a world of unreason. It’s not completely wrong-headed. Technology, in the form of the internet’s vast array of information and teaching tools, has been of immense value in allowing parents, teachers, and students to focus on specific learning objectives and get the skills needed for particular tasks. My kids have learned how to do carpentry work, solve computer problems, write effective essays, understand the inner working of Algebra, visually experience historical events, and engage with a host of other subjects through educational website links.

After COVID, online learning vaulted right into every bastion of education worldwide. The kids I assist through Unbound now have computers and use online resources. Preschoolers know how to use an iPhone to take selfies, kindergarteners follow online teacher aides, and every step of education reaches for the most up-to-date technology in every field of study known to humanity. We are all on the technology learning curve. A steep one that never stops.

AI now plays an ever-increasing role in education, with parents often taking one more step back. Instead of direct education or teacher/parent-managed education, AI programs formulate the systems in place and “creatively” adjust plans for students based on their responses.

Don’t think that I haven’t taken full advantage of technology in the educational arena. My two youngest children learn primarily online, while I am relegated to assistant and overseer. A profound change from how my older kids were educated. In previous years, I might have raged against the scary AIs taking over the world. I probably would now, except for the fact that my younger two are doing quite well. Their scores, as well as their independent educational achievements, speak well of the online educational system in place.

But, and this is an important “But,” I believe that part of the reason it has worked so well is that I am at home with them, present any time they need me. I stop whatever I am doing and assist when they have a problem or are considering new options, trying to process challenging information, or simply want to “talk” about something. I ask questions: How are things going? What are you working on? What resources are you using? Is that a trustworthy site? We discuss research topics, and the kids engage with their brothers and sisters on modern topics that I’m rather clueless about. I make fairly healthy meals on a regular basis, and we eat together whenever possible. We celebrate holidays, birthdays, and “good news” days. Sometimes, we do something fun together for no “reason” at all other than we want a change of pace.

We work together on projects: raising spring chicks, the summer garden, and home improvement projects, and we grieve when bad stuff happens. Bad stuff always happens at some point. Knowing how to deal with hurt is a life tool, too. Helping someone to live through a painful situation is something that no AI program or technological tool can honestly replicate.

Education in our vastly interconnected, technological world is all about discerning goals, building a strong work ethic and good habits, maintaining healthy boundaries, and loving each other along the way.

After all, we learn to live well. Technology may teach us many things, but without love and human connection, can the human race really say it has learned anything?

Sci-Fi in Our Lives

The Significance of Sci-Fi in Our Lives

The Significance of Sci-Fi in Our Lives helps us to explore various worldly dilemmas while broadening our imaginations and perspectives.

Here are some ways science fiction has influenced us.

If you are a science fanatic and modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) excite you, watching movies such as The Terminator or reading novels like “I Robot” must be your favorite pastime.

Besides being a form of entertainment, science fiction has played a significant role not only from a technological perspective but also in broadening our perspectives and contributing to the betterment of the business world. It has shaped the public’s perception of artificial intelligence and raised concerns regarding the possible threats and risks associated with the technology boom.

The Boom of Science Fiction: The Beginning

A writer and publisher, Hugo Gernsback coined the term science fiction and introduced the first science magazine, Amazing Stories, in 1926. Thanks to this guy, we can enjoy and explore many great stories in the 21st century in the much-famed sci-fi genre.

Science fiction is an entertaining genre offering various twists and thrills in literature, film, and media. It deals with speculative and imaginative concepts related to science, innovation, and the future. From aliens and innovations to time travel and advanced technology, this genre will never bore you.

It started from ancient myths and legends based on imagination and fantastical concepts. The 19th century is considered the turning point for this genre, as this period led to swift changes in technological innovations and scientific discoveries.

The Power It Holds Over Our Lives

Science fiction has shaped our lives and cultures in multiple ways. It has helped us explore various worldly dilemmas while broadening our imaginations and perspectives. Here are some ways science fiction has influenced us.

1.     Inspired by Many Technological Advancements

Let’s observe closely.

Futuristic technologies that were just science fiction are now becoming a reality. Science fiction has inspired scientists, engineers, doctors, business people, and many researchers to explore innovations. The world is diving deeper into Artificial Intelligence and seriously considering the interplay of artificial and human intelligence.

Despite seeming far-fetched, science fiction inspires, encourages, and motivates people to do better and become more inventive.

2.     Fostering Imagination and Creativity

Whether it’s a thriller or suspense like Stranger Things or a novel like A. K. Frailey’s NEWEARTH: Justine Awakens, sci-fi has expanded our mindsets and assisted in boosting our creativity and imagination. It encourages individuals to explore new futuristic ideas and concepts, positively impacting our lives while enhancing our knowledge.

3.     Offering Entertainment and Serving as a Positive Escape

The daily hustle has made our lives complicated. But fictional movies, TV shows, and novels help to divert our minds, ensuring peace of mind and even our sanity.

Science fiction allows us to escape from our daily lives and think about something new, which is, indeed, fascinating. It is not just a source of enjoyment or entertainment but a way to relax, enhance our knowledge of the world we live in and enlarge our vision of the future.

4.     Problem-Solving and Decision-Making

Science fiction has led us to create many hypothetical scenarios backed by science that engage our minds and, in the case of VR, even our bodies, which is healthy and positive for our overall well-being.

Stimulating creativity and imagination has improved our critical thinking skills, which helps us in making informed decisions. By exploring multiple outcomes and consequences in a safe fictional environment, we can prepare ourselves for what might come in the future.

Playing a significant role in helping us develop and grow in innovation and technology, science fiction has helped to boost creativity, broaden imaginations, improve problem-solving, and enhance communication skills. To delve deeper into the world of science fiction with a twist of artificial intelligence and aliens, get yourself a copy of NEWEARTH: Justine Awakens, a story of a human android that will surprise you with its thrill, entertainment, and possible real-world applications.

Renewal Story

Renewal StorySomething New Might GrowOriginal Characters from I’m Making Mine and It Takes TimeFrom One Day at a Time and Other Stories Collection

A Renewal Story that brings together characters from previous short stories, deepening their personal journeys, and offering fresh hope to all our lives.

Imogene stood in her weed-riddled backyard and scowled in the warm May sunshine. With food prices skyrocketing, she wanted a vegetable garden worth something this year, but Carl’s health wasn’t getting any better, and her back used naughty words whenever she weeded the front flowerbed. Her gone-evil niece, Lucy, was in some hippy college out west, most certainly ruining her health with tofu and other vegan foolishness, which probably wasn’t as bad as the red dye put in the fancy cupcakes Imogene had offered to the Ladies Aid Society on Tuesday. She corralled her thoughts back to the problem at hand. How was she ever going to drag a productive garden from this disreputable piece of earth? She glanced skyward. “Any ideas, Lord? I’m listening.”

Ambling gingerly across the mole-hole yard, Carl grinned as he approached.

A shudder ran over Imogene’s short, heavyset frame. She could manage the annual church bake sale with both hands tied behind her back, but give her a family member or a friend’s problems to deal with—outside her husband, of course—and she’d be as good as hog-tied for the entire week. She scratched her head, her short gray hair staying resolutely in place.

“Hey, Sweetheart. I got news!”

Imogene stayed still, trying to keep dread from filling her. Surely if it was something terrible, Carl wouldn’t be smiling. But then, what he considered “news,” often left her breathless with apocalyptic visions. He was just so darn casual about everything. She tried to crack a return smile.

Huffing to a stop, be brandished a grin like a warrior ready to outfox demonic foes. The glint in his eyes said that he was enjoying himself, though he might unmake the world as you knew it. “Marge is coming to spend the weekend with us!”

Her mind blank, Imogene tried to recall who Marge was without letting on that she had no clue. Getting old was hell. “Oh? Well, that’s nice, Honey.”

Unexpectedly, Carl’s smile deepened. “She’s the one who lives on that spread up yonder in Sangamon County. Her husband passed away a couple of years ago—remember? A second cousin on my mom’s side…”

A vague image formed in Imogene’s mind from a nearly forgotten family get-together at a great uncle’s parish in Chicago. A city she couldn’t get out of fast enough, family connections or no. “That depressed woman who sat by herself through the whole reunion? Didn’t even try to guess during charades.”

All smiles gone, Carl shrugged, his expression softened to sadness. “Yeah. She was going through a lot. We didn’t talk about it much, but her man was a drinker. Not a mean one but sly and stupid. Got fired so many times we lost count. Died from liver failure. Ugly way to go.”

No memories rode in to rescue Imogene from all the questions bombarding her mind. “So why is she coming here? We’re not exactly counselors, Carl. If anything, we could use a morale-boosting vacation in Florida.”

A snort and Carl agreed through an accenting nod. Then, as he waved a languid hand toward the unkempt back acre, he got back to business. “She’s a gardener. Got her kids into it and even helped out a neighbor’s son who has started his own vegetable stand in town. Got a green thumb and no mistake.” He turned and stood shoulder to shoulder with his wife, facing the yard. “She can get us started, so we do it right from the get-go.”

Though Carl’s presentation sounded right-nice, a question nagged. “How old is Marge?”

“About your age. A bit taller maybe and keeps her hair in a bun, but you’ll like her. Practical, no-nonsense woman.”

Imogene wasn’t sure what to make of this turn of events. She was the most practical non-nonsense person on the planet. How could two such women work in the same garden for Heaven’s sake?

His message of deliverance given; Carl hitched his way back to the house. “I’ve got some PPJs for lunch. Want me to heat up some tomato soup?”

With a nod and a grunt, Imogene glared at the sky. Said I was listening. Didn’t say I’d agree.

~~~
Marge arrived, as scheduled, on Friday afternoon. Carl was right. A bit taller with a neat grey bun on the top of her head, she looked every inch a country woman with wisdom embedded in the pores of her skin.
Imogene’s left eye twitched. It did that after a prolonged visit from her niece or a during the annual church rummage sale. People wore her nerves thin, and that’s all there was to it.
Carl acted as the host and even made a delicious roast beef with potatoes and carrots for dinner. As they sat at the wooden kitchen table, he chatted away throughout the meal, asking about relatives near and far. He didn’t seem unduly disturbed to discover that several of their kin had crossed to the other side. He’d just nod and smile. Calm, casual. Unflappable. Lord, Imogene loved her husband though she could barely understand him.
She watched Marge with all the intensity of a cat considering a new arrival. She wouldn’t say too much until she knew exactly what she was facing. Clearly, the woman wasn’t as dramatic and attention-seeking as her niece, didn’t have the gooey-goodness of half the ladies she knew through volunteer service, and played neither a hero nor a victim. Not one word about her departed husband or her kids, except a quick update: Jon was working in the city and came by every couple of weeks to help out. Kelly was working close to home and dating a nice young man. They raised the meat birds together every summer on her back lot, selling the extras in the farmer’s market. Imogene’s mind swam with foggy, unformed images.
The evening passed quickly as Marge said she was tired from the drive and went to bed before the birds had finished their goodnight songs.
Happily, Carl made sure their guest had fresh bathroom towels and called it a night as well.
It wasn’t till Saturday morning that Marge seemed to come out of her shell. In fact, she was already outside working in the yard when Imogene went to the kitchen and poured her morning cup of coffee. Startled, holding the hot cup and peering through the bay window, she squinted at the figure dressed in old overalls grasping a hoe and whacking away at the earth, tufts of weeds flying through the air.
Imogene started for the door, remembered that she didn’t have shoes on, and retreated to her room where Carl snored in complacent morning slumber. She hurried through her get-the-day-started routine as fast as decently possible. Even her prayers were abbreviated to, “Lord, You better know what You’re doing.”
Once outside, the smell of fresh earth, the feel of warm sunshine, and the sound of birdsong stopped her in her tracks. She hung back a second and watched Marge work.
Swift, sure aim, and the hoe sliced through a section of compact earth. Weeds flew in an arc. The ground before Marge had been squared off, and she appeared to be working backward, forming a large rectangle.
Imogene’s body ached at the thought of trying to turn all the uncovered soil. A sigh erupted from her middle before she could stop it.
Marge stopped swinging and looked over. She rested the hoe on the ground and leaned on it, casual-like. Kin to Carl, most certainly.
Caught, Imogene had no choice but to amble up and offer a cup of coffee or a word of praise. Something. “You must have a strong back, Marge. I can hardly believe how much you’ve done already.” Unexpectedly, uncensored words tumbled out. “I’m more an indoor person, good at church activities, volunteer service, listening without reacting too much. Which is what kids need these days, isn’t it? At least, my niece…” Why on Earth was she going on like this?
Marge nodded, her sad eyes considering a dying apple tree across the way. “My back is not what it was. I asked my son to come over with his tiller this morning and go over what I outline, with your permission, of course.” She shrugged. “I figure that five tomato and pepper plants, a couple of cucumber vines, green beans, and zucchini, with a side patch of potatoes and onions would about do.” She pointed to a sheltered spot by an old picnic bench. “Might want a line of herbs about there. Few oregano, sage, chives, and dill plants, would be nice.”  She swiveled and motioned to another spot nearer the kitchen door. “Could even put in a line of kale, spinach, and lettuce there in that sunny area. Right close to the house so you can snatch a salad for lunch or dinner.”
Unaccountably, Imogene felt tears fill her eyes. This woman was nothing like her niece, her neighbors, friends, relatives, or anyone she had ever met before. The vision laid before her acted like a clarion call to her soul. Her yard wasn’t an unprofitable weed-riddled piece of land she’d have to wrestle into usefulness. Suddenly, she saw the Grace of God ready to come to life. Surreptitiously, she wiped her eyes.
Marge kept her gaze kindly focused on the apple tree. “Might take a sprig from that tree and plant it close by.” She shrugged and a soft smile wafted over her face. “Never know. Something new might grow right up nice alongside of it.”
Imogene nodded in agreement. A memory rallied to the front of her mind. “Whatever happened to that boy you were helping out? Carl said he has his own vegetable stand…or something.”
Finally, Marge turned and faced Imogene. Their eyes met and understanding flowed between them. “Yeah. A nice kid. Slender, I call him. His Mom has got issues, and grandma can’t manage, but the boy might make something of himself. The salvation of me, that boy. And my kids. Loving them; you know what I mean?”
Imogene did.
With a nod and swallowing down a lump in her throat, she started for the shed. There was an extra garden hoe in there. With visions of weeds flying, she sidestepped every mole-hole and waved at Carl with a light heart as he called out, “Breakfast will be ready in just a bit.”
Is Humanity Worth Saving?
Is Humanity Worth Saving?A Fictional Take
Is Humanity Worth Saving A Fictional Take looks at an age-old question from a new perspective. The best of humanity continues to become beacons of hope.
Neanderthals have been around the planet for the last 30,000 years, walking the earth with their primal nature. With time, civilizations developed, humans evolved into a more intelligent life form, and technology became important. But the primal nature within us would make even aliens question our worth.
Wars are the products of the human race—and we continue to invest in them. At the same time, we have also achieved a lot of good. We’re reaching out for a glimmer of hope. Apart from the logical take, let us highlight why humanity is worth saving through a fictional lens.
Saving grace of lives well lived,
Do faithful offerings make.
Far away from familiar love,
A libation for my sake.
Weakened desire
Burns fresh anew
At the temple of my need.
– Newearth A Hero’s Crime
Good Humans Exist
It’s pointless to judge humans based on those people who do wrong. Remember when the world was struck by a pandemic that killed off thousands of people? During those hard times, we saw several heroes who risked their lives to help those in need. People working on the front lines, even when weary and exhausted, made a huge difference.
Inspirations to Many
We’re living in a time when we are inspired by those who came before us. This generation has endured a lot as well. We’ve witnessed a change in paradigms, making us the perfect role models for those destined to come after us. That’s why it’s up to us to pass on this positive goodwill.
In her second book of the phenomenal Newearth Series – Newearth: A Hero’s Crime, A. K. Frailey explores Cerulean’s role, the hero who helped to save humanity in Last of Her Kind. He was one of the greatest friends humanity could have, and what he created in the Inter-Alien Alliance was anything but ordinary. His efforts led him to trust even his enemies to help save the human race.
The Beacon of Hope
Some humans are a beacon of hope for those who can’t care for themselves. Whether it’s in the form of charity, training, or even closure—we can only survive if we help each other. So, let the best of humanity continue to become beacons of hope for those who don’t stand a chance in this cruel world.
Preserving the Future
Our world today appears to be a disaster on many levels, but who says that we cannot make it better? We have the resources, minds, and hearts to give back to our families and communities—to save our planet. Just like Cerulean, even in his weakened state, he had an important role to play. In witnessing hope and faithfulness, Cerulean, an imaginative character, offers us a chance to light the way for others.
A.  K. Frailey’s Masterpiece of Fiction
Sometimes, having a fictional lens can be just what you need to understand different aspects of life. A. K. Frailey, a widely-known author, shares that true heroes do everything they can to bring out the best in those around them. Even when compromised, weary, and dispirited, they have something to give. So, let’s not write off humanity just yet. Order your copy of Newearth: A Hero’s Crime today and discover how to become a beacon of hope.
Choices Poetry
Choices PoetryWhat Seems Good to Me
In Choices Poetry, imperfect daily options offer worst, bad, good, and best. Reach beyond self to see goodness as it may be.
I awoke this morning,
Cold wind, torn blossoms, forewarning,
This day I did curse,
Wishing worse upon the worst.
No.
Not me, of course.
I do what’s right and love,
From deep below to high above.
Heroic self does linger dear,
Savoring victim status forever near.
No one understands!
Out of my hands.
I do my best.
Refuse the impossible quest!
There is no stain of fault in me.
I choose goodness, holy right—always—surely.
Never, think I, do an evil act.
Only in stress might I react.
Unwholesome urge.
Evil purge.
Yet
A whispering voice nags my mind.
Turning me round to see behind.
My perfect ego rage,
As on bending treetops, ravens caw, set the stage.
Blind to haunting black, see only sepulcher white.
Mind focused, ignore growing blight.
Always choose good,
Certainly would!
Insists myself,
My inner, protective elf.
Searing ray breaks through the clouds.
Murder of crows doubts enshroud.
Chosen good—or goods?
Better for me—or best yet?
Understanding, vision perplexed.
Is what I want forever hexed?
Could me be my problem, see?
My choices demand not goodness be,
Only what seems good to me.
The raven flies away.
The dove finds a place to stay.
Not in seeking, hero, glorious self,
Find hope, happiness, or wealth.
The human curse I may deny,
But in honest reflection, wretched evil will belie.
In Creator blest
Do my best.
Heroic me?
Not I.
Take a fascinating journey into the creative and imaginative world of Christian-based science fiction author A. K. Frailey. An author of a historical sci-fi and science fiction series, short story collections, inspirational non-fiction books, a children’s book, and a poetry collection, A. K. Frailey has published 17 books. Her novels expand from the OldEarth world to the Newearth universe—where deception rules but truth prevails.
What is Christian-Based Historical Fiction?
Christian-based historical fiction is a genre of literature that encompasses both religious and historical themes in its narratives. It differs from other types of Christian fiction in that it not only focuses on spiritual themes but also provides an accurate and compelling depiction of past or period settings. These stories often include references to scriptures, religious symbols, and figures and provide moral messages throughout. Proponents of these stories argue that they can provide readers with valuable insights into history and faith by demonstrating how people of different faiths and backgrounds interacted in their cultures’ respective times. Moreover, this type of story can be powerful in terms of showing how faith has been used to triumph over struggles in difficult times. There is no denying that books falling within this genre have great potential for inspiring readers on both spiritual and historical levels. As readers embark on their journey for a greater understanding of their faith and the world around them, diving into the pages of Christian-based historical science fiction can be very rewarding.
A.K. Frailey Captivates
With themes ranging from faith, redemption, and grace; masterful plot lines that are captivating, thrilling, and even heartwarming; and a breadth and depth of characters that come to life on the page, the author has something for everyone. Delve into the unique landscape of faith-based sci-fi and explore its fascinating universe with A. K. Frailey, learning something new and exciting each time.
Faith-Driven Plots
Author A. K. Frailey is known for intricate science fiction novels that are recognizable for their faith-driven plots. Her characters, settings, and events reference spiritual aspects of Judaic history and Christianity, making it clear that faith life has a prominent role in her stories. However, the author does not focus on religion in any of her books. She allows them to be fully fleshed out as works of science fiction. A. K. Frailey’s novels juxtapose spirituality, faith, and science fiction together in a way that everyone can enjoy. The success of A. K. Frailey is a testament to the power of the Science Fiction/Christianity genre she has crafted over her career. Readers often find themselves enchanted and moved by her stories because of the connection they and the protagonists feel with their inner faith. When combined with themes of self-discovery and the wider universe, each plot becomes more intriguing and captivating. No matter personal taste, one thing is sure—audiences keep coming back for more from A. K. Frailey due to her unique combination of genres.
Broad Appeal
Author A. K. Frailey has succeeded by focusing on intertwining historical sci-fi and Christianity. Her novels often feature themes of self-discovery and references to historical religions so that readers can connect with their faith more deeply. By striking a balance between these two genres, A. K. Frailey appeals to various audiences, creating stories that captivate readers and stay in their memories long after they finish reading.
The Juxtaposition of Religion and Science Fiction
Faith and science fiction often occupy two different worlds. However, Author A. K. Frailey creatively bridges the gap. Some readers believe that the clash between science and religion is too great to reconcile, viewing the two as diametrically opposed. On the other hand, some see no conflict between the two and actively seek to explore a world where both are embraced simultaneously. In taking a closer look at A. K. Frailey’s faith-driven plots, it is evident that she falls into the latter camp. Her stories are filled with compelling characters and thought-provoking themes. A. K. Frailey invokes interdisciplinary connections between beliefs, spirituality, supernatural realities, and sci-fi in unique ways. Her narratives leave readers holding their breath during every twist and turn. By seamlessly incorporating faith elements with her innovative use of historical sci-fi, A. K. Frailey brilliantly highlights how technology can enhance man’s supernatural understanding without opposing each other. Rather than existing in binary opposition, A. K. Frailey’s subtle juxtaposition of faith and science fiction invites readers to contemplate how our relationship with technology evolves, ultimately leading to more profound reflections on how our spirituality transcends preconceived boundaries. Her brilliant type of artful fusion brings new possibilities to emerging generations by emphasizing enlightenment instead of division — something crucial for both fans of sci-fi and believers alike. Her kind of creativity drives A. K. Frailey’s writing style and encourages readers to marvel at her ambitious stories that stretch beyond typical religious boundaries.
Skillful Writing Style
Author A. K. Frailey’s writing style is an effective way of engaging both sides of the debate between faith and science fiction. By embracing the two, A. K. Frailey allows readers to come to their conclusions while exploring profound philosophical questions. Through carefully chosen words and detailed descriptions, she creates worlds in which faith and supernatural experiences can be married with technology in a believable way while challenging societal norms.
By skillfully weaving faith values and science fiction together through her writing style to create thought-provoking works often filled with emotional power and significance, A. K. Frailey serves as an example for future generations of authors looking to find clarification within the gray area between faith and science. Such stories ultimately allow us to explore our beliefs in ways that may have seemed impossible before, engaging both sides in meaningful discourse while building bridges instead of walls. As A. K. Frailey’s works show us, it is possible to push beyond traditional genres into unique new forms where faith is married with modern technology.
According to a review from Blue Ink Review, Frailey writes in a crisp, lean, and richly detailed style, building a fascinating, absorbing world. Frailey delivers a dynamic multidimensional twist to an otherwise prehistorical drama, something of a cross between Jean Auel’s Clan of the Cave Bear and Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series. Readers will hope to learn more in future sequels. Mixing Historical Themes and Ideas
Author A. K. Frailey has gained acclaim for the way in which she blends historical themes and ideas into her Christian-based science fiction. Her works never succumb to dry, improvable history lessons but rather seek to create a sense of engagement with the characters and their journeys, allowing readers to draw from authentic historical accounts if desired. A. K. Frailey makes sure to ground some of her speculative fiction stories in a realistic historical setting, which adds another layer of believability to each tale. She approaches this by utilizing source material to flesh out settings and characters in a way that many other Christian-based science fiction authors do not. She weaves powerful messages of morality and faith with believable settings anchored in history. In doing so, she provides an inspiring message while simultaneously engaging readers with tangible ideas they can consider more on their own. Christian-based science fiction is as much about moral development as it is about entertainment. Through A. K. Frailey’s works, readers are presented with future scientific possibilities alongside narratives of spiritual transformation. This allows readers to be inspired by both realms of faith and science. With skillful integration of themes from these seemingly disparate worlds, A. K. Frailey’s faith-based science fiction stands out as some of the most eloquently written and emotionally powerful stories currently available. Her profound impact on readers helps them make connections between faith, science, and history that could not have been made otherwise. Such links prompt us all to think more deeply about our lives, beliefs, and shared history—opening up a world of possibility and inspiring exploration in the future.
Character Development in Christian-based Science Fiction
In Christian-based science fiction, character development is integral to the overall narrative. With such detailed backgrounds steeped in faith and futuristic reality, the characters become much more believable and three-dimensional than most authors manage to achieve. It allows readers to understand a character’s motivations, empathize with them, and relate to their struggles. Author A. K. Frailey is a master of creating compelling, engaging, relatable characters, even within their historical settings. For example, in A. K. Frailey’s books, the protagonists are often seen as imperfect spiritual guides tasked with carrying out a heroic mission. They serve as strong archetypal figures in that their experiences reflect the journey of faith taken by many faithful men and women throughout history. Her characters often have complex backstories intertwined with historical themes and ideas from past centuries. This helps bring to life the ambitions and victories of struggling humanity on their journey of faith, making the story both emotionally powerful and thought-provoking. At the same time, such characters remain rooted in modern sensibilities while being imbued with an aura of timelessness that captures a reader’s attention and imagination. Author A. K. Frailey successfully combines historical themes and ideas with modern sensibilities in her novels. This mix creates a unique blend of characters whose stories can capture the hearts and minds of readers while inspiring them through their spiritual journeys. By creating captivating characters in her unique way, author A. K. Frailey demonstrates her mastery of crafting impactful Christian-based science fiction stories that engage readers and leave lasting impressions.
Readership Engagement
The level of engagement generated by A. K. Frailey’s unforgettable characters increases when readers can connect with them emotionally. How does author A. K. Frailey foster their connection? Having developed complex characters in her Christian-based science fiction works, author A. K. Frailey’s readers are kept highly engaged with her combination of religious themes and historical sci-fi, providing an interesting fusion that has attracted a wide array of followers who would have ordinarily not picked up a book with such a singular focus on either genre. Readers can relate to both worlds simultaneously, which has led to enthusiastic fans accumulating around her work. The mainstay is that her stories center around core Christian themes yet are action-packed and engaging enough to captivate all readers’ hearts, no matter their faith or individual background. Not only that, but her books also flow between the genres of Young Adult and Adult Fantasy Fiction. Fitting in both categories, her works cater to a more diverse readership, as youngsters and adults can find something in these books that speaks to them. Popular subjects such as love, family-friendliness, and redemption can be relatable for all audiences, thus creating an impactful story arc and driving readers to want more. Through readership engagement with A. K. Frailey’s books may vary—the reviews from her audience are proof alone that A. K. Frailey’s writing stands out amongst other similar authors who are tackling Christian-based science fiction works. With each book she publishes, there is something new to explore within these ever-evolving themes. It is clear that A. K. Frailey’s books have certainly left their mark on their particular genre of literature.
Comparisons with Other Science Fiction Authors Compared with other science fiction authors, it is clear that A. K. Frailey stands out in the genre. For one thing, her works contain a unique thesis—one that centers around Christian values. While some might view A. K. Frailey’s stories simply as historical sci-fi, they contain much deeper relevance and meaning to the reader. Furthermore, she uses futuristic elements to explore moral dilemmas and provide thoughtful questions. It is this combination of style and technique that sets A. K. Frailey apart from many other sci-fi authors. A. K. Frailey’s writing also stands out because of its intricate storytelling structure; it contains an unpredictable narrative journey that can surprise even the most experienced reader. Each story provides sufficient detail to ensure the reader feels a sense of investment yet quickly resolves conflicts to keep them engaged. Her stories tend to focus on issues of faith, spiritual growth, and external struggles, making them much more immersive than many other authors’ works. There is no denying the universal appeal of A.
