Words Won’t Do Poem

Words Won’t Do Poem

Words Won’t Do Poem lets nature make its meaning clear in its own way. Best get out of the way when it has something to say.

Birds don’t talk, but they sure can squawk.Best get out of their way when they have something to say.Words won’t do when the sky is blue,And rude dogs go a-howling…and a fowling.Flying feathers bustle, chattering in a tussle.Nectar sipped and seeds nipped.Before bed, no book they read.But nests prove true, though with much ado.At last sun-ray, finally, birds close the day.Trees refuse to budge a toe,But get ready to mow, and their leaves will slap ya, quite so.When spirits are high or mood is low,Swaying branches gallop to and fro.Leaves keep no time,But an inner rhyme,Measured only by the windchime.Silent fields roll under a wandering breeze.They tell no tales but promise with ease.Questions unanswered when people probe.Don’t mind them; always the same, across the globe.Buzzing bees and fluttering butterflies,Speak not a word,But their meaning is heard.Even the purring cat sitting atop your hat,States his position clear:You are you, but I am me.Isn’t it obvious, my dear?

Cross-Breeding With Aliens?

Cross-Breeding With Aliens?

An icebreaker sure to challenge boardrooms to school rooms: What about Cross-Breeding With Aliens? A fairytale or a cautionary tale that might never end?

What is out there? A question that is shrouded in ambiguity. As we look up, the deep abyss of space stares back at us, signaling mere nothingness. And we are reassured; there is a sense of calm; we are not being observed.

But every so often, a disruption makes us wonder. Within the deep abyss of space, a light shines, seeking the perfect sample, the perfect specimen…

Perhaps what terrifies us about deep space is that we are unaware of whether we are the only planet with sentient life floating in the universe’s darkness. What if we are not alone? If there are others out there, if there are, indeed, aliens in space, how do they see us? What are their motives?

Through the years, certain witnesses offer us their views on what to expect.

Many believe aliens are already here on Earth and that they secretly abduct human beings for cross-breeding experimentation. Others believe we are already living among these alien-human hybrids without even knowing.

Could any of it be true?

Why Us?

Firstly, the question arises, why would extraterrestrials, who are eons ahead of us technologically, even think of wanting to mix themselves with us humans?

Reproduction requires DNA from two individuals, which is compatible on a molecular level. For breeding to be even possible, aliens would need to possess compatible genetic material. The complexities go way beyond what science can even comprehend. But then again, though it’s highly improbable, it’s not impossible.

There may be a chance that aliens are curious to find out what the amalgamation of their species with ours would look like. Maybe they wish to conjure up a genetically advanced race, more than both our races individually?

Perhaps, they, too, are as curious about us as we are about them.

Or maybe, they have their own issues making them desperate. Maybe these voyagers are looking diligently for a new home, as are we with our expeditions on Mars.

Has there ever been evidence of aliens attempting to cross-breed with us in the past?

Study

Dr. Young-hae Chi, a Korean instructor at Oxford’s Oriental Institute, believes a very strong connection exists between climate change and alien abductions. This was followed up by numerous cases of individuals claiming that aliens had abducted them while they were sleeping.

One of the most famous instances of alien abduction was reported by Betty and Barney Hill during their honeymoon at Niagara Falls. Apparently, the couple had seen a “flying saucer” up close and personal, perhaps a bit too personal. They thought they might have been contaminated by whatever was looming over them. Observing the aircraft, they saw the saucer come closer to them.

After being “hypnotized and taken away,” Betty describes what transpired that night. She mentions walking through the woods with extraterrestrials into the flying saucer they had seen. She further said that the aliens convinced them that they meant no harm and just wanted to examine her. The “Examiner” took skin samples, taking a long needle and sticking it into her navel.

The bizarre encounter remains one of the most bewildering reports on alien abductions to this day.

Dr. Chi, in his presentation, cited Dr. David Jacobs, an abduction researcher who stated that aliens are here to colonize the Earth through interbreeding in the pursuit of producing a “hybrid” species. As of now, we can’t know the true motive of extraterrestrials—if there are any. Can humanity ever prepare for such a reality—for better or worse?

Last of Her Kind

In her book, Last of Her Kind, A. K. Frailey depicts this notion in one of the most compelling pieces of science fiction you will read. To save their dying race, Luxionians begin exploiting humanity through cross-breeding experiments. However, Cerulean, a fellow Luxonian, sees humans in a very different light.

Discover a story that truly transcends space and time with Last of Her Kind, now available on Amazon.

Historical Sci-Fi Action Drama

Historical Sci-Fi Action DramaOldEarth Ishtar Encounter ExcerptBeyond Mere Barbarism

In this Historical Sci-Fi Action Drama, humor and deadly experience jostle the good nature of friendship. “The strongest chains are in the mind.”

Eoban awoke from a deep slumber, scratching his tousled hair and rubbing sleep from his eyes. By the stars, I thought I’d died, and— A cooing sound turned his attention. He rose from his pallet and peered at the nearby figures. Snoring affirmed what he already suspected. The father and son were sleeping. Tiptoeing, he slipped out of the wine seller’s house.

After rounding the corner, he called. “Barak?”

Barak hissed. “Here.”

Like a blind man, Eoban reached out and slapped Barak’s arm. “Where’ve you been? I had to make up a thousand tales to tell that fool of a boy and his father. I thought they’d get tired and fall asleep like normal people, but no. They wanted nothing more than to stay up half the night and hear me tell one lie after another.”

Barak snorted. “Should’ve felt right at home.”

“On the contrary. I wanted to bolt out of their hospitable door and save my sanity. I’ve never been asked so many stupid questions in all my life.” Eoban’s voice simpered as he clasped his hands. “‘How many wives do you have? Where do your ancestors sleep? Have you built your tomb yet? What artisans do you employ?’ I would’ve liked to build their tombs—”

“Shhh!” Barak waved like a bat ready for takeoff. “Thank you for sharing. I’m fine. Your concern for my welfare is heartwarming. So glad you enjoyed yourself while I risked my life reuniting a father and son.”

Mild surprise caught Eoban off guard. “Luge found his son?”

“Not at first. He did see a boy about the right size and age, but when we caught up, he realized it wasn’t the right boy. The boy did, however, know of a training ground. He’d also been taken from his family and was inclined to help us. At the training ground, we found a group of slaves, and Luge’s son was among them. We managed to get near enough to speak to him. It took an ingenious plot on my part and a great deal of luck, but we got his son separated from the others, and Luge stole him back. They’re heading to the mountain pass.” Barak gestured to the inn. “Tell his men to go after them.”

Muttering under his breath, Eoban returned inside, tiptoed to the back of the dwelling, shook Luge’s men awake, untied their ropes, and hustled them outside to Barak, who gave them instructions.

Returning to Barak’s side, Eoban propped his hands on his hips.

Barak stroked his chin. “You’ll have to come up with a few more lies to explain the loss of your slaves.”

Eoban clapped Barak on the shoulder. “Not if we leave now. I’m in no mood—”

“You’re forgetting someone.”

With more muttering, Eoban traipsed inside, untied Obed, and shoved him awake.

Once outside, the three jogged away. Obed huffed as he trotted. “There’s a certain ironic freedom in being a slave, but would you mind telling me what’s going on? I’ve been tied up for hours.”

As the three men hurried along an empty thoroughfare, a streak of pink light appeared on the horizon. They turned right on a side street, jogged between myriad closed shops, and then at a wide intersection, turned left, searching for the main gate. Eoban clenched his jaw at the sight of people stirring at their doors.

Lanky dogs slunk to the shadows, as pigs, a loose goat, and a variety of scrawny hens scuttled out of their way.

As they entered a rougher, older part of the city, they slowed to a gentle amble.

Half-naked children appeared and stared through wide eyes. The stone streets turned to hard-baked clay, and the homes diminished to nothing more than waddle huts thrown up against the walls of the city.

Peasants in simple wool and leather garments shuffled by with downcast eyes.

Barak sighed. “I can breathe again.”

Eoban nodded through a huff. “I feel as if I’ve been living in a nightmare. That father and son—”

Obed turned, his mouth dropping open. “You think you can judge them? I heard a great deal as I sat there tied up like a sack. These people have rituals for everything— traditions that go back through generations. Men support more than one wife, they make wonderful trade goods, and their building skills surpass—”

Eoban halted and stared at Obed.

Obed stared back.

Averting his gaze, Eoban pointed to a grove of trees hovering on the edge of a meandering stream, which flowed down a gentle slope. He started away. “There’s a good place. I’m going to get a drink and a rest before I deal with you.”

Obed laughed. “Everyone who doesn’t see the world through your eyes needs to be dealt with, is that it?”

Barak groaned under his breath.

Each man took a long drink and soon found a soft spot under a large spreading tree.

Obed propped his head on his arm and stretched his legs. “I heard what you told Eoban about Luge, but tell me, Barak, how did you manage to get the boy away?”

With a grin, Barak shrugged. “I hate to say. It was nothing really. I just asked him where we should meet, and he pointed out a place. As the moon rose, we went to the spot and waited. When he reappeared, we walked away.”

Obed frowned. “No one was watching?”

“No one dares to cross the desert. After a time of mourning, most people simply accept their fate. The chains weren’t so strong—just never tested.”

“You mean other slaves could have walked away, but they never tried?”

Barak nodded. “The strongest chains are in the mind.”

Shoving himself upright, Eoban clapped his hands free of dirt. “Well, that’s a good deed done. Now, Obed, I’ve a few words—”

Obed waved his hand in protest. “Spare us your judgments. So, you’re blind to the magnificence all around you, who cares?”

Feeling like he’d been slapped, Eoban rubbed his jaw. “You have a way of saying things that make the most peaceable man want to knock you down. I wonder how Jonas stands it.”

Obed grinned, darting a glance from Barak to Eoban. “She loves me.”

Eoban snorted. “That’s about what it would take!” He rose and stretched. “Still, I think it’s you who are blind. These people are not great—”

Shooting to his feet, Obed jerked his hand in the direction of the city. “Have you no eyes?”

Eoban crossed his arms over his chest and glared. “The people who live there now are the recipients of other men’s intelligence and hard work. Slaves’ sweat and broken backs make their lives possible.” He stepped closer and peered narrowly at Obed. “They spend time comparing the softness of their clothes, how the colors strike their eyes, and how they feel when reclining on one pillow rather than another.” He lifted his hands as if imploring the sky to bear testimony. “Weak with madness, they are.”

“The city is well managed. There are guards and warriors in numbers beyond count to defend them. They have a well-developed system of trade, buildings for communal storage, magnificent homes for the rulers, and—if you didn’t notice—an ornate temple for their god.” Obed shook his head. “I doubt our clans could do as much over generations.”

Eoban dismissed Obed with a wave. “Why would I want to be like them? Did you learn nothing from Neb and Ishtar? No society can live long when it’s built on cruel force.”

“Cruel force? You know how many clans live in idle waste and make useless wars on each other? Here, at least every man builds to some purpose.”

Eoban shook his head as if to clear water from his ears. He turned, peering at Barak while pointing at Obed. “Who am I talking to?”

Barak frowned at his clasped hands. “I’m not sure.”

Obed laughed and stomped away. “Stop! So, I’m impressed with these people! I’m amazed that you two are too blind to appreciate the grandness of their design and execution. This city values its artists. They can ponder such novelties such as clothing design and pillow comfort because they have time to do so. They’re not sweating for every mouthful or worrying about how to keep their children alive. They’ve moved beyond the barbarism of mere survival.”

Barak straightened and stared at Obed’s back. “There is much to be said for the ‘barbarism of mere survival.’ I work hard to feed my children, but I still have time to think. Is it acceptable to you that this city’s grandness is paid for by the forced separation of a father and son? Would you let Onia be taken so that others might enjoy their art?”

Obed leaned on the tree and chewed his lip. “You’re right on this point, of course. But you can’t deny—they’ve built some marvelous works.”

Eoban snorted. “Anything built on blood is bloody, and I don’t admire bloody things!”

Barak lifted his hands. “We have yet to look earnestly for Ishtar in the city. One more day, and we’ll head home.”

Obed glanced at the towering temple that rose above the city walls. He sighed. “Agreed.”

Eoban felt his stomach fall into a black pit. “Agreed.”

Can AI Improve Learning?

Can AI Improve Learning?

Can AI Improve Learning? As we consider AI today and what its future might look like, we must not lose our humanity. Can AI safely advance learning strategies?

Artificial Intelligence is making waves in every corner of the world. While most people are embracing AI and all its wonders, others are worried; they will be out of jobs.

At the same time, some fear that Hollywood’s rendition of robots taking over the human race could happen in real life. In contrast, few think of it as a panacea to solve all the major problems like injustice, criminal activities, education, and improving businesses, just like the character of Justine, a human-android in NEWEARTH: Justine Awakens, who is ordered to kill a human-hybrid named Derik, to protect an alien world’s reputation and save Newearth from a dangerous war.

When we talk about dangerous human behavior, it is an important aspect of contemporary societal problems like pollution, overconsumption of basic necessities, and criminal activities. These are just a few examples that portray human behavior. Still, these problems need to be addressed, and what is a better way than incorporating Artificial Intelligence into our lives?

Feel, Learn, and Evolve!

People are concerned about the impact on employment equity, technical and financial gaps, freedom, and their very own existence. AI has a fine grip and power in many dimensions. It is perfect for concrete-focused things like performing particular surgery or flying a mini drone to the moon. It has expanded the vision of how people think and helped them come up with solutions to problems that were not quickly addressed before. Yet, now it is probing into much more ambiguous areas like education and morality.

AI has played a significant role in shaping individual preferences, needs, and learning styles. Take COVID-19, for example; AI completely changed how students attended classes and prepared for or took exams during the pandemic. All academic institutes switched to online methods of teaching, and it completely changed how students learned, thought, and behaved. Now even after the pandemic, these strategies are still being implemented. It has helped teachers and students improve.

Furthermore, AI-based technologies, such as intelligent tutoring systems, personalized learning, and adaptive learning tools, have helped people learn better. AI has enhanced the ability to solve problems and anticipate danger quickly and efficiently. It allows people to change, evolve, and get things done.

However, AI is often misused in many parts of the world. The growing technological advancements have also assisted many hackers worldwide. Apart from this, with increased productivity at a workplace, it can also lead to lower-quality jobs. Not only this, but AI promotes marketing strategies that manipulate human beings, like clever design tactics and predatory advertising, which are difficult to detect.

How AI Improves Human Behavior

AI has brought remarkable assistive technologies, and some of them were previously inconceivable. These AI-powered assistive technologies can help disabled people live more independently. Let’s not forget smart glasses, which help individuals with visual impairment. Ask yourself how AI is helping you in your daily life.

Artificial Intelligence has improved the healthcare systems in multiple ways, including physical and mental healthcare systems. It assists individuals suffering from anxiety, stress, and depression with the help of AI-powered tools that act as virtual therapists for those in need.

It is a great tool for diagnosing health issues and diseases and predicting potential health complications. This gives a better insight while providing enhanced treatment plans.

With the help of high-tech devices, law enforcement agencies can easily predict where most crimes are likely to occur by analyzing data and identifying patterns. High-resolution cameras can identify criminals, making it easier for law enforcement agencies to find them.

Artificial intelligence is advancing; we must maintain the human-machine connection. But we must also ensure we don’t exchange the fullness of nature with some tech solution. We must not end up living in a virtual world where we lose the richness of humanity and our hearts and souls. Yet, AI has changed how people think and react to different situations and has advanced learning techniques and strategies.

Where are we headed? The future stares us in the face. Are we paying attention?

To get a deeper insight into Artificial Intelligence, get yourself a copy of an epic sci-fi NEWEARTH: Justine Awakens, where machines are the future, yet the human-hybrids of this world can fall in love – something they are not programmed to do.

Trust in a Dishonest World

Trust in a Dishonest WorldMy Road Goes Ever On

Trust in a Dishonest World reveals the best and worst in the human experience. Artists consider all of life’s messiness with a will to understand and find hope.

It’s a beautiful June morning; the birds are singing, the cats lazing, the dogs resting from night patrol as the coyotes have been out in force, visions of chicken dinners dancing in their heads, no doubt. My chickens are safe for another day, thanks to doggy faithfulness. Which is rather astonishing, really, when I think of it. Clearly my collie and husky are going against DNA ancestry by protecting birds they wouldn’t mind chowing down in the least. As I face a world full of contradictions, abundant dishonesty, and human frailty, I squint ahead, trying to discern what I focus on, decide what am I actually seeing, and what will I choose to believe—even against all odds.

Being a writer in today’s world is much the same as being an artist in any era. I can think of no more vulnerable way to expose the human experience than through writing and poetry. Sheesh, who needs nude beaches when we have humanity’s soul laid bare in the works of Longfellow and his artistic kin? Writing punches through our natural protective shields and tells a truth as we have experienced it. Not to say that the splintered fragment a writer, painter, or sculptor exposes is the whole truth, the final truth, or the absolute truth. We’d hardly need more than one artist in the world if that were the case.

I woke up with the image of Christ’s tomb in my mind this morning. Why? I have no idea. But I allowed myself the time to ponder where the image took me and why I needed it now at this moment in my life.

I’ve been writing for a lot of years and not making a huge amount of headway in terms of sales. I have signed on with lots of different promotional outfits, some of which were outright scams, some did their best—which didn’t amount to a hill of beans—others came through in very specific areas, but none worked magic. Huge surprise.

“Magical” thinking is so inherent in our society that we often buy things based on a promise that can’t possibly be fulfilled. The other day I received a call from a gal who insisted that she was representing a big-time movie producer, Del Toro, who was interested in my book The Road Goes Ever On—A Christian Journey Through The Lord of the Rings. Laughable? Yes. I knew from the get-go that I should never have answered the phone. It was after dinner on a Saturday evening, and I was tired, but I had just been to Mass and the glow of sacrificial love still burned bright. So, I let her talk and attempt to sell me on the ridiculous notion that “Del Toro,”—or anyone—for that matter, wanted to turn my Christian reflection book into…anything. As I listened and asked a couple of sensible questions, which she neatly deflected by talking faster, I sensed the urgency in her voice, and I wondered why she was doing this. Why was she scamming people? Perhaps it does make good money, and she can sleep at night on a soft bed. Maybe she is being trafficked and forced into the position against her will. I had no idea, but I thanked her for her call and told her that I wasn’t interested. No insults for wasting my time and trying my weary patience. No point. I had no idea if she was the predator or just another victim herself.

In contrast, this morning, I thought about St. Joseph of Arimathea, the guy who gave his tomb so that Christ would have a decent burial place. A rich and powerful guy, a leader in the very organization that had just tortured and murdered Christ—the God-man who loved humanity all the way to the Great Divide. Historically the event happened whether one believes in the divinity of Christ or not. Joseph, who must have been awfully disillusioned at that point, gave up his own burial spot, which undoubtedly cost serious money, to a dead man who had apparently failed big time.

So, what do my collie, Longfellow, a scammer, and a saint have in common? Willfullness. Not because my collies’ doggy heart is blessed by free will does she do something helpful, forgoing the short-term profit of a tasty meal. But because somehow, however unexpectedly, a dog can act like a true friend. Longfellow and his artistic mates cast off protective armor and bare their suffering, endurance, hope, and despair for all to see—in a cosmic sharing of the human burden. The scammers of our modern world remind us all that decency and truthfulness are not guaranteed and self-delusion is far too easy to sleep with. Finally, the vision of the empty tomb brings hope to my heart. Joseph gave away his last best good, a place to bury his body. When all was said and done, it was still there waiting for him, with the proof that what he freely gave was returned in full—with a hope filled promise.

It takes a dishonest world to discover what trust really looks like.

An Inter-Alien Alliance

An Inter-Alien AllianceIs It Likely?

Is An Inter-Alien Alliance Likely? Odds are that at least one planet, in the infinity of space, harbors beings speculating about us from afar.

The Earth is beautiful. 7 continents, 195 countries, a nourishing habitat, brilliant species, and what’s more intriguing, there is still more to be discovered. What’s truly fascinating is that Earth is just a tiny part of the solar system. The thing about humanity’s existence is that the more you zoom out, the tinier you get. Keep going; our expansive world is reduced to a little rock, drifting through the abyss of space.

We’re one planet, among 8 others that make up our solar system, just one of the numerous other systems through our Milky Way galaxy, one of the countless other galaxies in our “observable universe.”

Odds are that at least one planet, in the infinity of space, harbors beings speculating about us from afar.

In her fiction novel, author A.K. Frailey takes that possibility into account. Last of Her Kind is a riveting and thought-provoking narration that tells the story of planet Lux, where Cerulean, a guardian alien, oversees a fragile Earth. While his people see humanity as a possible threat and, later, as possible throw-away tools, he sees them in a different light.

Frailey provokes an important thought. If there is life out there, is there a possibility of an Inter-Alien Alliance?

Can humans and aliens not only coexist but align their interests for the benefit of all?

The Obvious

The Earth is about 4.443 billion years old. If you put that into perspective, the fact that we’re still here should support the argument that aliens are not hostile, contrary to their portrayal in pop culture. Currently, the evidence we have of aliens is in the archives of YouTube videos which are ‘particularly’ convincing.

The infamous “Tic-tac” UFO incident is a prime example of one of these incidents. In 2004, a US Navy Pilot, Commander David Fravor, was on a routine training mission on the coast of California, where he witnessed one of the most convincing UFO phenomena ever. He reports an unidentified flying object, moving at blistering speeds without any source of propulsion. Even the Pentagon acknowledged this encounter, among many others, between military pilots and referred to as “anomalous ariel vehicles.”

In 2022, the Pentagon released numerous reports of this unexplained UFO phenomenon. It is evident that whatever is out there has chosen not to hurt us and wants to be particularly discreet as well.

But suppose, one day, these extraterrestrial beings do make contact with us; how can both civilizations help each other in an Inter-Alien Alliance?

Give and take

Taking Commander Fravor’s example and a myriad of other UFO sightings, these aircraft are very intelligently put together, given the materials used for aerodynamics, the intellect, and the source of energy that helps to propel them. Not to mention that if they could make it to our planet, it would take an enormous amount of energy to do so. Humanity’s biggest threat is a lack of a renewable, clean energy source. Who knows, considering the potential of their expertise, aliens can provide us with equipment that helps us develop immensely. You might be wondering, if aliens are so advanced, why would they be headed to Earth, of all places?

As far as we can see in our solar system, the Earth’s nourishing atmosphere is one of the few that harbors life. Perhaps, they would come for our raw materials or merely to enjoy the luscious sceneries of our planet.

Slowly and gradually, the sun will burn out, and the Earth will move to its inevitable demise; Aliens might help us migrate to other planets as well. We could save billions of dollars on space exploration and use our money to better other facets of our world.

Communication

Lastly, to decipher whether this will even take place, we must understand how to communicate with these extraterrestrial creatures. Is there a channel by which we have communicated in the past? The infamous Wow! Signal was the single instance of possible extraterrestrial interaction from outer space. On August 15, 1977, a radio telescope recorded unusual feedback that lasted 72 seconds. No one knows where it came from, but speculation is that it wasn’t from here. Perhaps, aliens are trying to interact with us, just not in the way we think.

As for Cerulean in Last of Her Kind, he is fascinated by a particular inhabitant of our little blue planet, a woman named Anne Smith. She proves to be the catalyst for his motivation to save the human race. Will Cerulean succeed in his plight to save a world on the brink of destruction? Find out by picking up one of the finest pieces of science fiction and a prelude to Frailey’s Newearth series, Last of Her Kind, now available on Amazon.

Self-Reflection Story

Self-Reflection StoryFrom You Know It’s Real (One Day at a Time and Other Stories)and That’s Your Job (It Might Have Been and Other Stories)Then He Saw

In this Self-Reflection Story, two characters who experienced similar losses, discover that despite their differences, they suffer much the same.

Patrick O’Donnell—never Pat or Patty, always Patrick—dropped his journal satchel onto the passenger side of his car, revved his silver Cruise to life, and headed down the quiet lane, a road that would eventually lead to a turnoff, heading onto I-70. This same lane, a mere twenty years ago, his wife had insisted, in her quirky preternatural insight, would lead them “home-sweet-home.” She had been right. About so many things. But not everything.

Her death from advanced brain cancer, two years and fourteen days previous, had hit him and his son and daughter like an avalanche of smoldering rock. Tige, now a man of eighteen, found happy distractions among his construction co-workers and weekends with the guys. Clare, just a tad over sixteen, suffered the lot of a high school teen without a mother to understand her daily trials and tribulations.

His hand tightening on the steering wheel, Patrick corralled his thoughts back to the matter at hand: an interview with one of the most prominent members of the entertainment world, Gabe Sable. An influencer with wide appeal.

Tucked into Patrick’s bag were a month’s worth of research notes and photos depicting his subject’s turbulent family history, marriage, rise in the publicity field, hints of alcoholism, a therapeutic leave of absence, divorce, the death of his ex-wife, raising two kids alone… The similarities to his own life had been duly noted. But those happenstance occurrences wouldn’t cloud his judgment one iota. Gabe was undoubtedly another glorified man-child in the playground of life. Patrick had seen so many. Thirty years of journalism had done little to improve his opinion of humanity. This recent headline writers’ strike only proved his point in block letters.

As he swung into the highway and motored to the appointed meeting in St. Louis, Patrick once again thanked his lucky stars that he had stuck to freelance work. Though he had no unionized protection, he had steadfastly remained his own man. As far as Patrick was concerned, that’s all that really mattered.

~~~
As far as luxurious suites went, Patrick had seen better. Though not shabby in the least, it didn’t shriek opulence like some meeting spots he’d seen in the past. Humanity’s deep need to impress usually trampled right over good sense and any possibility of decorum.
What is it with people and reporters? Everyone’s got to prove they’re special.
Gabe had answered the hotel door only half-dressed, hurried through a smattering of practiced apologies, and ran off to the bathroom to finish preparing himself. He’d had the courtesy to yell over his shoulder, “Sorry, I kinda lost track of time, but I called and ordered coffee and stuff. A variety. Should arrive in a minute. Be right there.”
Patrick sighed. Whatever. He charged by the hour, so if this guy wanted to pay extra to make up for being rude, so be it.
Taking in the surroundings, the immaculate queen-sized bed, media console built into the wall, kitchenette, plush couch and chairs, coffee table, and all the other amenities, Patrick felt drawn to the large window. He drew aside the curtains and let the view take his breath away.
Once upon a time, he had been a city guy. Loved the nightlife and roamed like a tomcat. But once he met Emily, all that had changed. Somehow or another that fragile-looking woman brought out the best in him, smoothing the rough edges, and teasing him over things she couldn’t change. They laughed. A lot.
“Quite a view, eh?”
Patrick swung around and faced a handsome man in his mid-forties. However, the guy wasn’t smiling. Unexpected that. Don’t handsome guys always smile? Wasn’t that part of their charm?
“Uh, yeah. Lovely.” Patrick eyed the bag he’d dropped on the chair. He had a sudden desire to grab it and riffle through his notes, recalling everything he knew to be true about the person in front of him.
Dressed in brown loafers, casual tan pants, and a loose blue shirt, Gabe padded to the window and faced the city. “You think so? I mean, St. Louis is a great city, with incredible history and all, but…” He shook his head. “I don’t know. Saw a lot of homeless folks on the ride in. Had my driver take me through the east side—thought he’d have a coronary.” Another shake of the head and a rueful grin. “My bad. I hadn’t realized… Another world, you know? Not a good one.” Grief entered his eyes. “Pretty far from lovely.”
A ting of fear rippled over Patrick. This wasn’t going to be a routine interview. The best part of a boring job was that you knew exactly what would happen next. It was also the worst part. He suddenly saw the contrast with brilliant clarity.
A knock on the door announced the coffee and “stuff.” Once the waiter had laid out the scrumptious assortment of sweetbreads, muffins, and other breakfast fares on the table, Gabe dug in like a guy who hadn’t eaten in a week. He poured strong coffee and handed Patrick a cup, assuming—correctly—that he drank it black.
Sitting on the plush chair, his notebook on his lap and his recorder on the table, Patrick eyed his client as he scarfed down a raisin nut muffin and sipped his coffee.
Time was a-wasting, so Patrick launched in. “I know that your business has taken a hit with recent events, so what’s your opinion on the writers’ strike? Who needs to give in and how soon will it get settled?”
Gabe blanched and rose from his chair. He returned to the window, still holding the steaming cup in his hands. He stared across the cityscape but didn’t seem to be looking at anything in particular. “I haven’t a clue.” He turned and faced Patrick. “I looked you up online. I know about your wife’s death. Raising your kids alone. A successful man who stayed on the job even when his life fell to pieces. That’s why I asked you to meet me. Your articles reflect a thoughtful mind. Guarded but sincere. I don’t need you to clarify my reputation. I don’t care about it anymore. Reputation, like influence, comes and goes. The one thing I actually did learn from therapy.”
Naked anguish filled Gabe’s eyes, terrifying Patrick almost beyond comprehension.
“My daughter Sarah isn’t doing well. A genetic condition that’s got the doctors baffled. Seizures and she faints out of the blue. Blair, my eldest, gave up a good position after graduating from college so that she could take care of Sarah full-time, but her eyes tell me that it won’t be for long. Just like with her mother, this horror just swept in and—” Gabe’s voice broke, and he hung his head, standing still and limp, a rag doll too well propped up to fall over.
Patrick’s jaw hurt from clenching so hard. This wasn’t what he’d expected…no one deserved…
Then he saw it. With horrifying clarity, he faced himself, like a man staring at his own reflection. They had both lost their wives, but somewhere in his soul, Patrick had figured that after drinking bouts and a divorce, Gabe had deserved to suffer. Not like him, who had tried to do everything right but still lost his wife. This rich, handsome guy, a big influencer, who’d been given a second, maybe even a third or fourth chance deserved whatever hell life had to throw at him. Right?
But not his kid…
Questions and justifications swirled in Patrick’s brain. Why not his kid? What about all the people he had hurt while drinking? What about the people who suffered from his bad judgment? Wasn’t it whispered by “those in the know” that he had spurred on the writers’ strike just so he could get some fresh blood in the stream?
Gabe collapsed on the couch and dropped his head onto his hands. “You don’t know what a fool I’ve been. All my life, I have chased after the ‘good things’ in life. But the only really good thing I have ever done”—his head jerked up, and he stared, devastated, right into Patrick’s eyes—“was father my children. I love them more than my own life. And I can’t protect them. Death and destruction creep up and kick the hell out of us no matter what.”
Clare’s red-rimmed eyes from a recent altercation with a girl at her school rose like a specter before Patrick’s eyes. At least, she was able to walk away and talk about it. Imagine if she had fainting spells…what would the other kids do? Clare would die of mortification…
Beyond all the years of training in the school of tough love, hard knocks, and you-deserve-what-you-get mentality, Patrick turned off his recorder, rose from his chair, and simply stood by the man. He faced the window.
When Gabe turned around, both their reflections stared back at them.
A Hero’s Crime
A Hero’s CrimePassing On the Baton
True heroes don’t just believe, they leave a legacy. In her book, Newearth: A Hero’s Crime, A. K. Frailey depicts a fictional scenario where true heroes act as legacies for those who will come after them. After all, the world will live on. Who will help us next? Let us elaborate on what passing on the baton actually means.
The Act of Serving Others
The characteristic of a true hero is the will to serve others. A hero’s selfless nature isn’t something one is born with. In today’s cruel world, when many are ruthless in their approach to others, there stands—often alone—particular individuals who would risk it all to help others. When passing on the baton, that selfless character bears heroic witness to those who must stand tall for future generations.
The Ability to Withstand Losses
Even when you live for the sake of others, you’ll experience pain and loss. But that’s the definition of heroic! The true mark of a hero is that they seek happiness in the well-being of others. Despite fighting impossible odds with no way out, they continue to struggle for the benefit of others. That’s what makes them so unique. Rather than hold onto personal glory, they are willing to pass on the torch to the next hero in line.
In her book, Newearth: A Hero’s Crime, by A. K. Frailey, the mighty Cerulean, once hailed as the Earth’s greatest hero, must face his own limitations. When a planet-eating monster threatens the universe, he must allow a new hero to save it. He understands that someone else who can endure loss but stays in the fight will take his place in the heroic role.
Teaching Humbleness
The best part about true heroes is that they are humble. They appreciate the honor bestowed upon them and are grateful they could serve in a meaningful way. True heroes shy away from acclaim and consider themselves one of the people. Let’s be honest; it’s hard to follow a proud and arrogant “hero.” The phrase “Arrogant Hero” is an oxymoron, no?
The Aura of Winners
True heroes are winners! Even if they lose on particular occasions, they only work harder to win in the long run. That’s what separates them from the rest. We might not often witness such heroes in our era, but those who do, draw us into their endeavors—calling us to follow heroic virtues and bring out the best in us to become like our mentors, enjoying the same aura of winners.
The Hero’s Crime, Or Is It?
In her book, Newearth: A Hero’s Crime, A. K. Frailey crafted a story where a former hero discovers that his friends can assume the heroic mantle, instilling hope for the future. When he faced despair, “a crime against humanity” in his mind, his friend, Clare, saw the matter more clearly, “you show us what makes a hero…and let us rise in our way,” allowing him to realize that his crime was really a “hero’s crime.” His acts of selflessness and kindness toward individuals spread out to embrace the whole universe. Order your copy from Amazon and witness Cerulean’s heroic story unfold.
