WRITER’S FORUM ROMANCE WRITERS

                        WEBSITES HELPFUL TO WRITERS

This is a series of posts which, I think, will be beneficial to writers.

But first, I would like to include my usual warning about using websites.

Whenever you check a website you are, in my opinion and I talk from experience, being put on a list for sale. So, expect the possibility of being bombarded by ads from companies you, perhaps, have never heard of and have no interest in.

By the same token, I feel that once you call a business for information you are also put on a list, for sale, of similar companies to the one you have called.

That’s just how it is in today’s society.

I hope you find the information offered in these posts helpful.

CLEOPATRA’S DAUGHTER, A BOOK REVIEW

CLEOPATRA’S DAUGHTER, A BOOK REVIEW

                                                      BY

                                     JANE DRAYCOTT

The name Cleopatra is well known, but not the name of her daughter, Cleopatra Selene.

This extensively researched memoir of Cleopatra Seline covers the period in the BCEs of the early 30s to the early CEs and follows the life of Cleopatra Selene in Egypt from birth until the suicide of her mother. The young girl was then taken to Rome at around the age of ten where she was a virtual prisoner. Upon entering womanhood, she married Juba and became queen of Mauretania.

What I found remarkable about this book was the amount of detailed history which is known about the era of Cleopatra Selene’s life and the important individuals impacting the time before, during and after. The amount of information available regarding individuals who had a significant role in her life and lineage is, to me, surprising.

Other interesting details covered in this book were that during this period in history incest and murder within royal families were not unusual. To have married brother and sister couples as rulers was often the case. Neither uncommon was the fact that members of families murdered or arranged the murders of other family members.

The book also points out that a great deal of historic detail is gleaned from coins printed during that time of antiquity. Portraits on the coins give some clue to the appearance of significant players during this time.

This book provides a remarkable and thorough review of ancient history rarely explored during the life and era of Cleopatra Selene.

ELECTION ADS IN PENNSYLVANIA

                       ELECTION ADS IN PENNSYLVANIA

By now, if anyone doesn’t know that Pennsylvania is a ‘battleground’ state, let me know where the cave you live in is. I’d like to move in with you.

There was recently a news piece on a local station in Philadelphia which addressed the constant bombardment of negative political ads and the effect on the mental health of the state’s population. In Pennsylvania you cannot hide, no matter how hard you try, from those ads. The content of those ads has prompted this post.

In some of those ads there is no political party of candidate running for office guilty of telling the truth and nothing but the truth. The problem I have with the current mass of ads is that they are not necessarily guilty of falsehoods. They are guilty of not reflecting the current reality.

Ads currently being broadcast say that inflation is high. It was high but is now at low levels. As low as it was in the past.

Ads cry that the price of gas is triple what it was four years ago. I’ll let you look at the current price of gas where you live and tell me if that price is triple the price of four years ago.

Ads say that consumer confidence is low. I just heard a news report that consumer confidence is high, and people have increased their spending.

Ads stating that the interest rates are high. A current article by the Associated Press states that the current interest rate is the lowest it’s been since 2021. A personal note. The interest rate the owner of the house I live in was paying, which we bought in 1986, was 13%.

Of course, there are some out there who will say that what I stated above is false news. Unfortunately, we live in an age where you can believe what you want to believe and easily find a source to back you up.

And now, as a Pennsylvania resident, I’m preparing myself today for another onslaught of political ads with questionable facts. I expect this no matter how hard I try to hide.

THE GHOST OF E. A. POE

THE GHOST OF E. A. POE

My latest published short story, The Price of Success, was published this month by Yellow Mama. Accompanying the story was a drawing by April Lafleur which capture the essence of the story.

The Price of Success reveals the unexpected results a writer of horror has when collaborating with the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe. Accepting help from the ghost the struggling writer realizes, only too late, the consequences of his decision.

The primary location of this story is Baldwin’s Book Barn one of my favorite bookstores located in West Chester, PA. Home of one of the finest used bookstores in the country.
